Stay inside, keep the door shut, and move people and pets away from the entrance. Don’t go outside to approach, photograph, feed, chase, or scare the animal. Contact your local wildlife authority about the sighting; call your local emergency number if someone is in immediate danger.
This is cautious advice for an urgent situation, not a door-specific protocol issued by a wildlife agency. Official guidance cited here focuses chiefly on mountain lions, also called cougars or pumas, in the United States. Other large-cat species and local rules may call for different guidance.

What to do while the animal is at the door
- Keep the door closed. Stay indoors and move everyone away from the entrance. Do not open the door to get a better look or try to make the animal leave.
- Bring children and pets away from the door. Keep household pets inside and secure. This applies the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s advice to keep pets secure to the immediate situation.
- Give the animal space and an exit. Do not approach, corner, chase, feed, or try to scare it. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) says, “Never approach a mountain lion.” The National Park Service (NPS) advises giving a mountain lion space and a way to get away.
- Contact the appropriate local authority. Report the sighting or ongoing concern to the wildlife agency responsible for your area. If anyone faces immediate danger, call your local emergency number. Reporting contacts and wildlife rules vary by jurisdiction, so don’t rely on a phone number from another state or country.
If you can observe from inside without opening a door or going closer, note the animal’s location and whether it remains nearby. Do not let the desire for a photo delay a call for help or lead you outside. If you cannot tell which species it is, say so when you contact the local authority rather than assuming that mountain-lion instructions apply to every large cat.

Why not open the door or try to frighten it away?
Opening the door changes a situation in which you are separated from the animal into one in which you may be close to it. Official mountain-lion guidance says not to approach and to give the animal room to get away. It does not recommend going out to make noise, wave an object, or otherwise confront a cat that is outside your home. The advice to appear larger and make noise applies to a person already outside during an encounter; it is not a reason to step outside.
Likewise, do not feed the animal or try to lure it away from the entrance. The priority is not to control its movement yourself. Keep the entrance closed, keep people and pets back, and report the sighting to the authority that handles wildlife in your area.
If someone is already outside
Instructions for a person who is already outside are not an invitation to leave the house and confront the animal. If a person is outside near a mountain lion, official guidance is to stay calm, face the animal, stand upright, and make yourself look larger. Do not run, turn away, or crouch. Make noise, give the animal room to leave, and back away slowly while still facing it if it moves closer. Keep an escape route open for the animal rather than approaching or cornering it.

The NPS wording is: “Do not run or turn your back on a lion.” CDFW and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also advise not running and not turning away during a mountain-lion encounter. If attacked, fight back. These are encounter instructions for someone who is outside—not steps to take through an open doorway.
If someone is outside while the animal is at the door, do not open the door to call them closer or go out to meet them. The person outside should use the official encounter guidance: face the mountain lion, remain upright, look larger, avoid running, and give it space to leave. If the animal moves closer, the guidance is to back away slowly while still facing it. If the person is in immediate danger, call the local emergency number and follow the dispatcher’s directions.

If the animal comes closer or someone is in immediate danger
Keep the door shut if you are inside. Call your local emergency number if a person is in immediate danger, and follow the dispatcher’s directions. If the person at risk is already outside, they should face the mountain lion, appear larger, avoid running, and give it a way to retreat. If an attack occurs, fight back, as official mountain-lion guidance recommends.
Use the wildlife agency for a sighting or continuing concern when there is no immediate emergency. The right reporting route depends on where you live. For example, New Mexico’s Department of Game and Fish directs residents to its area offices or statewide number for residential cougar sightings and to 911 in an emergency. That state-specific route should not be treated as a general contact number.

The title does not identify the reader’s location, and agencies’ contacts and rules vary. A local wildlife agency is the appropriate place to report a sighting or ongoing concern; an emergency number is for an immediate threat to a person. When you make contact, explain where the animal is and whether anyone is in immediate danger. If you are unsure which agency serves your area, use the locally applicable public-safety route to find the right contact rather than approaching the animal.
Once the animal has left
Wait until it has moved away before opening the door or letting people and pets outside. If the animal remains nearby or returns, keep your distance and update the local wildlife authority. For repeated concerns, focus on reducing conditions that may make the property attractive or provide cover; do not attempt to handle or deter the animal at close range.
A sighting alone does not establish that an animal is an imminent threat. CDFW says few mountain-lion sightings result in an animal being identified as an imminent threat to public safety. Still, do not treat that general context as a reason to approach, open the door, or ignore a recurring concern. Keep the immediate precautions in place and let the local authority advise on the report.

Reduce attractants and hiding places
CDFW recommends deer-proofing property and removing dense vegetation that can provide hiding places. It also recommends outdoor lighting, which can make it harder for a mountain lion to approach unseen. These are longer-term prevention steps, not substitutes for staying inside during an active sighting.
Think of these measures as property maintenance after the immediate situation has passed. Deer-proofing addresses one of the property conditions CDFW identifies; trimming dense vegetation reduces cover around the property; and outdoor lighting can make an approach less hidden. None of these recommendations means you should go outside to install, adjust, or test equipment while the animal is still nearby. If sightings recur, report the pattern to the local wildlife authority and ask about locally appropriate prevention, including wildlife-exclusion fencing where relevant.
Protect outdoor pets and livestock
CDFW recommends securing outdoor large pets in sturdy, covered shelters at night. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also advises keeping pets secure. If there is a wild cat at the door now, keep household pets indoors rather than going outside to move or retrieve them.
Do not risk a close encounter to bring an outdoor animal in while the wild cat is present. The practical advice for the active sighting is to keep household pets secure indoors. For future nighttime protection of outdoor large pets or livestock, CDFW’s recommendation is a sturdy, covered shelter. This is prevention guidance; it is not a way to approach or deter a wild cat currently at the entrance.
What about lights, alarms, sprays, or other products?
The recommendations reviewed support broad prevention categories such as outdoor lighting and covered pet shelters, not a particular product or a performance claim for one. CDFW’s lighting advice is for making it harder for a mountain lion to approach unseen. Do not use a light, kennel, spray, alarm, or other consumer product as a reason to go outside or try to deter an animal at close range. No specific model or product was evaluated here.

What the mountain-lion guidance does—and does not—establish
Mountain lions generally avoid people. CDFW says they typically pose little threat to humans and that few sightings result in an animal being identified as an imminent threat to public safety. That general risk context is not a guarantee about an individual encounter; distance, caution, and local reporting still matter.
CDFW reports fewer than 50 verified mountain-lion attacks on humans in California since 1890, including six fatal incidents. The agency page does not state a year for that figure. It is a California historical count, not a rate or a prediction for another location, another species, or a specific animal at your door.
The species distinction matters. The guidance above is grounded in U.S. agency recommendations for mountain lions. The title’s phrase “large wild cat” could also refer to a leopard, jaguar, tiger, or another animal, and the available guidance does not establish that the same encounter instructions apply universally. Follow the wildlife and emergency authorities for your location and the animal involved.
In short, keep three situations separate. For an animal at the door, stay inside, keep the door closed, move people and pets away, and contact the relevant local authority. For a person already outside near a mountain lion, official encounter guidance is to face it, avoid running or turning away, appear larger, and give it room to retreat. After the animal has left, consider property and pet-safety measures for recurring risks. Do not turn one category of advice into a reason to take a greater risk in another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I open the door to see what kind of wild cat it is?
No. Stay inside, keep the door shut, and move people and pets away from the entrance. If you can observe from inside without going closer or opening a door, note the animal’s location. Do not approach to identify or photograph it.

Should I make noise or try to scare the animal away?
Do not go outside to scare, chase, or confront it. Mountain-lion encounter guidance to make noise and appear larger is for a person who is already outside; it is not an instruction to leave the house. Keep the door closed and give the animal space to leave.
Who should I call if a large wild cat appears at my home?
Contact the wildlife authority responsible for your area about a sighting or ongoing concern. Call your local emergency number if someone is in immediate danger. Contacts and reporting rules vary by location, so do not use a state-specific number as a universal contact.
What if the animal does not leave or comes back?
Keep the door shut and maintain distance. If it remains nearby or returns, contact or update your local wildlife authority. Do not approach it or try to deter it at close range.
What should someone outside do if they see a mountain lion?
Official guidance says not to run, turn away, or crouch. Face the animal, stand upright, appear larger, make noise, and give it room to leave. If it moves closer, back away slowly while still facing it. If attacked, fight back. This guidance does not mean someone inside should open the door.
Does mountain-lion advice apply to leopards, jaguars, and tigers?
The sources reviewed chiefly address mountain lions in the United States and do not establish that the same instructions apply to every large-cat species. Follow the wildlife and emergency authorities for your location and the animal involved.
Will an outdoor light or pet kennel protect me during an active sighting?
No product is a substitute for staying inside, keeping the door shut, and contacting the appropriate authority. CDFW recommends outdoor lighting and sturdy, covered shelters at night for outdoor large pets as longer-term prevention; no particular model or performance claim was researched.
How common are mountain-lion attacks on people?
CDFW says mountain lions typically pose little threat to humans and reports fewer than 50 verified attacks on humans in California since 1890, including six fatal incidents. That is a California historical count, not a prediction for another place, another species, or an individual encounter.
The Bottom Line
Keep the door closed, move people and pets away, and do not approach or try to scare the animal. Contact your local wildlife authority about a sighting; call your local emergency number if someone is in immediate danger. Mountain-lion advice for someone already outside is different from the cautious door-specific response, and should not be treated as a reason to go outside.
