Ethereum vs. Solana: How Transaction Fees Affect Token Supply

Ethereum and Solana burn different shares of transaction fees, but issuance also affects supply. Here’s how to compare the mechanics without mistaking burns for net deflation.

Ethereum burns the full base fee of each transaction, while Solana burns half its base fee. Neither rule alone tells you whether ETH or SOL supply is shrinking: both networks also issue tokens, so the net change depends on burns and issuance over the same period. The fee systems also calculate costs differently, so comparing a single nominal fee does not show which network is cheaper or which token had the larger supply change.

How fees change token supply

A transaction fee can have two different effects: some or all of it may be removed from circulation, and some may be paid to a validator. A burn reduces supply compared with what it would have been without that burn. It does not automatically mean the token’s total supply fell, because newly issued tokens can offset or exceed the amount burned.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters when describing ETH or SOL as inflationary or deflationary. To establish whether supply actually contracted, compare total burns with total issuance over a defined period. The cited official documentation describes each network’s fee and issuance mechanisms, but does not provide a paired, current-period dataset showing aggregate burns against issuance for both networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is useful to keep three questions separate. First, what does a user pay for an individual transaction? Second, how is that fee divided between burning and validator compensation? Third, after including new issuance, did total supply rise or fall over a particular period? A fee schedule answers the first two only in part; it cannot answer the third without dated, network-wide totals.

Ethereum: the base fee is burned

Ethereum measures computation in gas. A transaction’s fee is based on the gas it uses and the applicable base fee and priority fee. The base fee is set per block and adjusts according to how the previous block’s gas use compares with its target. Ethereum burns that base fee; the priority fee, or tip, goes to the validator that includes the transaction. See Ethereum’s gas and fees overview and EIP-1559.

In simplified terms, the amount associated with the two fee components depends on gas used multiplied by the applicable base-fee and priority-fee rates. The base fee is a protocol-set component, rather than a payment that the validator keeps. The priority fee is the tip component for the validator. This split is why “Ethereum transaction fees are burned” is imprecise: the base fee is burned, while the priority fee is validator revenue.

What a high-demand period means

When network demand is high, the base fee can rise, increasing the amount burned per unit of gas. Ethereum also issues ETH to validators for consensus activity. As Ethereum’s technical introduction to ether explains, blocks can burn more ether than they mint when demand is high, offsetting issuance. That is a possible outcome, not a permanent supply guarantee: the result depends on activity and issuance over the period being measured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The implication is conditional, not automatic. More demand can mean a higher base-fee rate, but total burn also depends on how much gas transactions use and how much activity occurs over the chosen interval. And even a substantial burn does not by itself prove net contraction: ETH issuance continues through consensus rewards. To say that ETH supply fell over a month or year, use issuance and burn totals for that same month or year, rather than inferring a result from a busy block or the fee rule.

Gas is not the same as the fee amount

Gas measures the computational work a transaction requires; the gas price determines how much ETH is paid for that work. Ethereum.org gives 21,000 gas units as the requirement for a standard ETH transfer. That is a gas-use example, not a fixed transaction price: the ETH cost depends on the fee rate at the time. More complex transactions can use different amounts of gas. Details are in the Ethereum transaction documentation.

For a reader estimating a fee, this means the 21,000-gas example is only one input. It describes a standard ETH transfer’s gas requirement, not what that transfer will cost in ETH at any particular moment. The applicable fee rate matters too, and it can vary as the per-block base fee adjusts with gas use relative to target. Do not quote 21,000 as a transaction fee or assume every Ethereum transaction consumes that amount.

Solana: half the base fee is burned

Solana’s fee documentation describes a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, including applicable precompile signatures. Half of the base fee is burned and half is paid to the block-producing validator. An optional priority fee is calculated from the requested compute-unit limit and compute-unit price; all of that fee goes to validators. Solana summarizes the total as “Total fee = base fee + priority fee.” See the Solana Fee Structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The signature basis makes the base-fee calculation structurally different from Ethereum’s gas-based calculation. The documented figure is per signature, so the relevant count is not necessarily just a casual reader’s idea of “one transaction”; the documentation also includes applicable precompile signatures. The priority fee is a separate, optional component, determined using compute-unit pricing and the requested compute limit. The documented allocation is therefore split: half of the base fee is burned, the other half and all priority fees go to validators.

The 5,000-lamport figure is the current parameter shown on the Solana Fee Structure page accessed in 2026. It is a documented runtime parameter, not a promise that the value can never change. Check the current documentation before treating it as a timeless constant or using it in a current fee estimate.

Priority fees and requested compute

Unlike a fee based only on the compute actually consumed, Solana’s priority fee uses the requested compute-unit limit. Asking for a higher limit than needed can therefore increase the fee even if the transaction does not use all of that compute. The documented default compute-unit price is zero, so an optional priority fee is not necessarily added. The requested limit is a cost setting as well as an execution allowance; avoid setting it unnecessarily high. Solana explains the mechanics in its fee documentation.

This detail matters when interpreting why two transactions with similar outcomes might have different fees. A transaction’s priority fee is not calculated simply by looking backward at the exact compute it ended up consuming; the requested limit is part of the calculation. If that requested limit is substantially higher than necessary, the fee may be higher than it would be with a more appropriate limit. Conversely, the documentation’s zero default compute-unit price means that a user does not necessarily pay an added priority fee just because the transaction has a compute limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a trade-off: the limit is also an execution allowance, not merely a price input. The practical lesson supported by the documentation is to avoid setting it needlessly high; it is not to assume that the lowest possible setting is always suitable. The exact appropriate limit depends on the transaction, and the cited official documentation does not give a universal recommended limit.

Failed transactions still incur fees

Solana deducts fees before executing a transaction, and the fee remains charged if execution fails. A failed transaction therefore does not mean no fee was paid. This behavior is also specified in the Solana Fee Structure.

This is a separate issue from whether a transaction succeeded in producing its intended result. Under the documented rule, failure does not reverse the fee deduction. Readers should not count only successful Solana transactions when thinking about fees paid or fee flows; failed attempts can still contribute to fees collected and their associated allocation. The cited Ethereum sources do not establish an equivalent general statement about failed Ethereum transactions, so this comparison should not be extended beyond the documented Solana rule.

Inflation is a separate supply flow

Solana’s staking page publishes schedule parameters of an initial inflation rate of 8%, an annualized disinflation rate of −15%, and a long-term rate of 1.5%. These describe the inflation schedule, not a current realized net supply-growth figure or a staking yield. Staking yield and inflation rate measure different things. See Solana’s staking information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These figures are useful for understanding the documented schedule, but they should not be presented as the supply change that occurred in a particular current period. Nor should the inflation rate be substituted for staking yield: the official staking material explicitly distinguishes the two measures. To assess net SOL supply movement, compare period-specific issuance with the amount of SOL burned over the same period.

Fee mechanics compared

Question Ethereum Solana
What determines the base fee? Gas used and the per-block base fee; the base fee adjusts based on the previous block’s gas use relative to target. 5,000 lamports per signature in the fee documentation, including applicable precompile signatures.
What happens to the base fee? The full base fee is burned. Half is burned; half goes to the block-producing validator.
What happens to priority fees? Priority tips go to the validator that includes the transaction. All priority fees go to validators.
What determines priority fees? The user’s priority fee is part of the gas-fee calculation. Compute-unit price and requested compute-unit limit; the default compute-unit price is zero.
Can the fee be charged if execution fails? Not stated in the cited Ethereum sources. Yes. Fees are deducted before execution and remain charged if the transaction fails.
What other supply flow matters? ETH issuance to validators for consensus activity. An inflation schedule that funds validation.

The networks’ fee units are not directly comparable. Ethereum quotes gas and gwei pricing; Solana uses lamports per signature for its base fee and compute-unit pricing for priority fees. A meaningful cost comparison would convert units and match the transaction workload, execution conditions, and time. A nominal number in one system cannot be compared directly with a nominal number in the other.

Even a unit conversion alone would not settle the comparison. A fair transaction-cost comparison needs to describe what work is being performed: Ethereum’s gas use varies with the transaction, while Solana’s base fee is signature-based and its optional priority fee depends on requested compute and compute-unit price. A standard ETH transfer’s 21,000 gas example is not equivalent to an unspecified Solana transaction. Match the workload and fee conditions, and distinguish the amount a user pays from the share that is burned.

The token-supply comparison has an additional layer. A larger burn fraction per transaction does not necessarily mean a larger aggregate burn, because the amount of activity, fee levels, and fee components differ. Ethereum burns the whole base fee, not the priority tip; Solana burns half of its base fee, not the priority fee. Neither percentage alone tells you the total fees burned across a network, much less the net supply change after issuance.

How to judge whether ETH or SOL supply fell

  1. Choose the same time window. Define the start and end dates. A burn rule alone does not establish what happened to total supply during a particular month, year, or other interval.
  2. Measure issuance for that interval. Include newly issued ETH or SOL, rather than treating validator fee revenue or a published inflation parameter as the whole supply picture.
  3. Measure fee burns for the same interval. For Ethereum, count the burned base fees. For Solana, count the burned half of base fees; priority fees go to validators under the documented rule.
  4. Compare the flows. If burns exceed issuance, supply is lower than it would have been without those flows; if issuance exceeds burns, supply can grow despite the burns. State the period and the data basis when reporting a net result.

Solana’s published 8%, −15%, and 1.5% schedule parameters cannot substitute for a dated net-supply calculation. Likewise, Ethereum’s ability to burn more than it mints in high-demand blocks does not prove that it did so across an unspecified period. The official sources cited here do not establish which token’s total supply changed more over the same recent interval.

When reporting a comparison, be explicit about what the calculation includes. Fee-burn totals should follow the protocol allocation described above: Ethereum’s base fee and Solana’s burned half of its base fee. Issuance should cover the same dates. Validator tips and Solana priority fees are fee revenue under the documented rules, not fee burns. Mixing a fee number from one date range with an issuance estimate or schedule parameter from another can produce a misleading result.

Finally, distinguish a counterfactual from an observed total. Saying a burn reduces supply relative to what supply would have been without the burn is a statement about the burn’s effect. Saying total supply actually fell is an empirical claim that requires the full supply flows for the period. Both statements can be true or false independently: burns can occur while total supply still grows if issuance is greater, and supply contraction cannot be inferred from the fee split without the aggregate numbers.

What the fee split does—and does not—tell you

  • It tells you the protocol’s burn allocation. Ethereum burns its base fee; Solana burns half its base fee.
  • It tells you part of the validator compensation structure. Ethereum validators receive priority tips; Solana validators receive half of base fees plus all priority fees.
  • It does not rank the networks’ net supply change. The burn fraction, fee volume, issuance, and period all matter.
  • It does not make raw transaction fees comparable. The fee models use different units and inputs, so compare equivalent workloads rather than isolated nominal amounts.
  • It does not show an investor outcome. A protocol burn rule describes a supply mechanism; it does not by itself say what either token’s market price will do.

Why the parameters need a date

Fee and supply parameters can change. The 5,000-lamport Solana base fee and the inflation schedule figures above are those shown in the cited Solana documentation accessed in 2026; they should be read as documented parameters, not timeless guarantees. The Ethereum gas example is also a documented standard-transfer example, not a universal charge. Any claim about actual net supply movement needs dated aggregate burn and issuance figures for the period being discussed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official sources for this comparison were retrieved on October 12, 2026. The date matters especially for the Solana base-fee parameter and inflation-schedule figures, which are documented values rather than immutable facts. The official sources establish the mechanisms described here, but do not supply a paired current-period total showing aggregate burns versus issuance on Ethereum and Solana. For that reason, this article explains how to compare the flows without claiming which network had the greater net supply change in a particular recent period.

Frequently asked questions

Do Ethereum and Solana transaction fees make ETH and SOL deflationary?

Not by themselves. Fee burns reduce supply compared with what it would have been without the burns, but issuance also affects total supply. To determine whether either token’s supply contracted, compare burns with issuance over the same defined period.

Which network burns more of each transaction fee?

Ethereum burns the full base fee, while Solana burns half of its base fee. That does not establish which network burns more in aggregate: total activity, fee levels, and the relevant period also matter.

Does Ethereum burn the priority fee?

No. Under the documented Ethereum fee split, the base fee is burned and the priority fee, or tip, goes to the validator that includes the transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can a Solana transaction cost more than expected?

The priority fee is based on the requested compute-unit limit and compute-unit price, not just the compute actually consumed. A needlessly high requested limit can increase the fee. The documented default compute-unit price is zero, so an optional priority fee is not necessarily charged.

Are failed Solana transactions free?

No. Solana deducts fees before execution, and those fees remain charged when a transaction fails. The cited Ethereum sources do not establish the same general rule for Ethereum here.

Is Solana’s 8% inflation rate its current net supply growth or staking yield?

No. The 8% figure is the published initial inflation parameter; the same schedule lists −15% annualized disinflation and a 1.5% long-term rate. These are schedule parameters, not a current realized net-supply figure or staking yield. Net supply movement also depends on burns over the measured period.

Can I compare Ethereum’s 21,000 gas figure with Solana’s 5,000 lamports?

Not directly. The 21,000 figure is a gas-use example for a standard ETH transfer, while 5,000 lamports per signature is Solana’s documented base-fee parameter. They use different units and describe different parts of each fee model. A fair comparison needs equivalent transaction workloads and applicable fee conditions.

Are failed Solana transactions free?

No. Fees are deducted before execution and remain charged if a Solana transaction fails.

Is Solana’s 8% inflation rate its current net supply growth or staking yield?

No. It is the published initial inflation parameter, alongside −15% annualized disinflation and a 1.5% long-term rate. These schedule parameters are neither a current net-supply figure nor staking yield.

Can I compare Ethereum’s 21,000 gas figure with Solana’s 5,000 lamports?

Not directly. 21,000 gas is an example of gas required for a standard ETH transfer; 5,000 lamports per signature is Solana’s documented base-fee parameter. They use different units and describe different parts of each fee model.

The Bottom Line

Ethereum burns its entire base fee, while Solana burns half its base fee; validators receive the respective priority fees, and Solana validators also receive the unburned half of base fees. Those rules explain fee allocation, not whether ETH or SOL supply actually fell. For that, compare dated issuance and burns over the same period, and compare transaction costs only across equivalent workloads and fee conditions.
