If fuel is running short, turn off every nonessential load, keep only life-safety, medical, refrigeration, communications, and essential heating or cooling equipment on a planned schedule, and shut the generator down between operating blocks. If you cannot keep fuel, temperature, medical power, or carbon-monoxide protection safe, move people and critical equipment to a shelter, charging station, cooling center, or warming center.
Before adding fuel, switch the generator off and let the engine cool completely. Use only the fuel specified on the generator’s label or in its manual, store it in an approved safety can outside living areas, and never siphon gasoline. Run a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, with working carbon-monoxide alarms inside the home.

Decide which loads deserve the remaining fuel
A generator running low is a prioritization problem, not a reason to keep the entire house powered. Make a list of everything connected, then separate equipment that protects health or prevents serious damage from equipment that merely improves comfort.

Do not add a load simply because the generator has an unused outlet. Every appliance increases fuel use and can contribute to an overload, especially when a motor starts. If a medical device is involved, follow its instructions and contact the care team or equipment provider about a safe backup location before the fuel is exhausted.

Run planned operating blocks instead of wasting fuel
With a limited supply, a schedule usually gives you more useful hours than leaving the generator running continuously for low-value loads. Choose blocks around the needs you identified: for example, one period for medical equipment and communications, another for refrigeration, and a separate period for essential heating or cooling. Shut the generator down when the scheduled loads are complete.

Write the schedule where everyone can see it. Include the start and stop time, which devices may be connected, and who is responsible for checking the generator. Stagger appliance startup: connect or switch on one item at a time, wait for the generator to stabilize, and then add the next item only if the manual permits it. This reduces the chance that several motors start together and overload the generator.
Do not improvise by connecting a high-demand appliance to a different outlet or by using household power strips. The generator manual remains the authority for allowable load, starting requirements, and operating limits.

Use the specified fuel
Check the fuel type printed on the generator or stated in its manual before every refill. A shortage is not a reason to substitute a different fuel or to mix fuels. If the required fuel is unavailable, switch to your fallback plan rather than experimenting with an unapproved product.

Shut down and cool completely
Turn the generator off before opening the fuel cap. Let the engine and surrounding parts cool completely; adding fuel to a hot engine can ignite vapors. Keep ignition sources away while handling fuel, and wipe up any spill before restarting.
Store fuel in an approved container
Use an approved safety can, keep it outside living areas, and follow local fire-code limits for storage. The permitted amount and storage arrangement vary by location, so do not assume that a particular can size is legal everywhere. Keep containers secured and away from children, flames, and the generator’s hot surfaces.
Never siphon gasoline
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that siphoning gasoline can cause burns, exposure to concentrated vapors, aspiration injury, and illness if gasoline is swallowed. Do not use your mouth, a hose, or an improvised pump to transfer fuel. If a container cannot be handled safely, leave it closed and obtain help from emergency personnel or a qualified fuel provider.

Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless toxic gas. The CDC reported in a public-health message dated August 26, 2026, that more than 500 Americans are killed by CO each year. Place a portable generator outdoors
Operate a portable generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents. Never run it inside a home, garage, basement, carport, shed, crawlspace, or any other partially enclosed area. Opening a window or running a fan does not make indoor operation safe; exhaust can still accumulate to deadly levels.
Keep the generator in a location where people cannot accidentally enter the exhaust area, and check that doors, windows, and vents remain closed or otherwise protected from the exhaust path. Recheck the distance if you move the unit, refuel it, or change the layout around the generator.
Use working CO alarms
Place battery-operated or backup CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Test them according to their instructions before relying on the generator. An alarm is not a substitute for outdoor placement; it is an additional warning layer.

Connect power without creating an electrical hazard
Use the right extension cords
Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords rated for the total connected load. Inspect cords for damage, keep connections dry, and route them where they will not be pinched or become a trip hazard. A cord that is too light for the connected equipment can overheat even when the generator itself has not tripped.
Never backfeed a building
Do not plug a generator into a wall outlet to energize house wiring. This practice, called backfeeding, can energize circuits unexpectedly and expose utility workers and occupants to lethal shock. It can also start a fire.
If you need a permanent connection to selected household circuits, have a qualified electrician install a transfer switch and the required wiring. Do not defeat breakers, improvise a male-to-male cord, or rely on a disconnected main breaker as a substitute for a properly installed transfer system.
Prevent overloads
Read the generator manual for its capacity and starting-load limits. Add the wattage or other load information for every device you intend to run, account for motor startup, and keep a margin rather than operating at the limit. Start large appliances one at a time and disconnect loads before adding another. If the overload protection trips, shut down or remove loads as directed by the manual instead of repeatedly resetting it.

Plan fuel logistics without relying on a universal quantity
There is no universal household fuel amount that guarantees a particular runtime. Actual runtime depends on generator size, connected load, fuel type, tank capacity, weather, and local rules. A small, lightly loaded unit may run differently from a larger unit carrying heating or medical equipment, so the only reliable estimate comes from the generator’s documentation and your own operating schedule.
Track fuel in practical terms: note the starting level, the hours operated, and which loads were connected. This gives you a household-specific estimate without assuming that a manufacturer’s maximum-runtime figure applies to your emergency load. Recalculate whenever you add a major appliance or weather changes the heating or cooling demand.
Keep storage within local fire-code limits and buy only the fuel type the generator accepts. During a shortage, avoid exhausting the reserve on convenience loads early in the outage. If a supplier, local authority, or emergency manager imposes purchase limits or directs residents to a particular distribution point, follow those instructions rather than transporting fuel unsafely or storing more than allowed.
Federal Emergency Management Agency guidance about critical facilities is not a household stocking recommendation. Its discussion of NFPA 110 notes that requirements vary with the facility and hazard, with onsite supplies ranging from five minutes to 48 hours and longer planning in some critical facilities. Those figures cannot be converted into a standard amount for a home.
Know when to stop using the generator
Stop and relocate people or critical equipment if any essential safety condition fails: you cannot keep the generator at least 20 feet from openings, a CO alarm is sounding, fuel must be transferred unsafely, the required fuel is unavailable, cords or connections are damaged, or the generator cannot carry the medical or temperature load without overloading.
Choose the fallback location before the last fuel block. Depending on local availability, that may be an emergency shelter, a charging station, a cooling center, or a warming center. Bring medications, medical equipment and its instructions, identification, chargers, and information about the person’s power needs. Do not wait until the indoor temperature or a medical device’s battery reaches a crisis point.

Common mistakes and the safer correction
- Running the whole house: Disconnect comfort loads and reserve runtime for medical, safety, food-preservation, communication, and essential temperature needs.
- Refueling while hot or running: Shut down, wait for complete cooling, then add only the specified fuel.
- Siphoning from a vehicle or another tank: Do not siphon gasoline; use an approved safety can and a safe, legal supply method.
- Placing the generator in a garage or near a window: Move it outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents; fans and open windows do not make enclosed operation safe.
- Using a wall outlet as a generator inlet: Never backfeed. Use properly rated cords for direct loads or have a qualified electrician install a transfer switch.
- Connecting several appliances at once: Stagger startup and follow the generator manual’s capacity and starting-load limits.
- Waiting until the fuel is gone to find help: Decide in advance where to go if safe operation, medical power, or indoor temperature cannot be maintained.
