If the transfer is still unconfirmed, your wallet may support a chain-specific fee bump or replacement. If it is confirmed, you generally cannot cancel it yourself; a return may depend on the recipient or the service controlling the address. Never share your seed phrase or private key, or pay someone who contacts you unsolicited to recover funds.
Start by checking the transaction record
- Save the details. Record the asset and amount, sending wallet or exchange, destination address, selected network, approximate time, any status or error message, and the transaction hash if one is available. A transaction hash identifies a blockchain transaction; it is not the same as a wallet address. Hash and address formats differ by chain. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) provides examples.
- Open the send record. Check its status in the wallet or exchange and, if available, follow the block-explorer link. Verify the destination address, network, and number of confirmations. Coinbase recommends checking both the transaction status and explorer record; for a send pending at zero confirmations, it advises contacting Coinbase support. See Coinbase’s pending-transaction guidance.
- Confirm the recipient is checking the same network. The same asset can be sent over different networks. The network selected by the sender must match the one the recipient or receiving service expects. Coinbase says it cannot recover funds sent on the wrong network; check its unsupported-crypto recovery guidance for its policy and any applicable limits.
If the transfer was initiated through a centralized exchange, ask the exchange for its status and transaction hash if one should exist. An exchange may process a transfer internally before it is recorded on a public blockchain. The IRS distinguishes on-chain transactions from off-chain exchange transactions in its 2024 guidance, so a missing hash does not by itself establish that a blockchain transaction is stuck.

If the crypto transaction is still pending
Pending usually means the transaction has not yet been included in a block. A low fee can make a transaction wait longer, but there is no guaranteed confirmation deadline. For Bitcoin, blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average; actual block discovery is probabilistic, with no guaranteed minimum or maximum wait, according to Bitcoin.org.

Some unconfirmed Bitcoin or Ethereum transactions can be replaced or accelerated using wallet features, but the method depends on the chain, wallet, and transaction state. Use only the wallet’s own instructions; there is no universal cancellation button. Trezor explains Bitcoin RBF and CPFP approaches and replacement guidance for Bitcoin and Ethereum in its transaction-fees guide. For Ethereum, Ethereum.org’s transaction documentation describes sending a same-nonce transaction to cancel a pending one. Such an attempt is not guaranteed to work and may require a fee.

If you sent crypto to the wrong address or network
Confirmed transfer to a wrong address
Once a transaction is confirmed, ordinary sender-side cancellation is generally unavailable. Bitcoin.org says confirmed funds sent to the wrong address can only be refunded by the recipient. Ethereum.org likewise states that an Ethereum transaction is irreversible. If you know the address owner, contact them using a trusted channel. If the address belongs to an exchange or other service, contact that provider through its official website or app and give it the transaction hash and details.

An address might belong to another person, an exchange, a smart contract, or nobody with accessible keys. Do not assume that an address that looks similar to the intended one is recoverable. In a limited smart-contract case, the contract may have a recovery or withdrawal function; check the contract’s official documentation rather than trusting an unsolicited offer to unlock funds. See Ethereum.org’s guide to crypto sent to the wrong address.
Transfer sent on the wrong network
Contact the receiving service promptly and provide the asset, amount, network, destination, and transaction hash. Whether it can help depends on the address and the provider’s procedures; some providers cannot recover wrong-network transfers. Do not treat recovery as guaranteed or send additional funds to an address supplied by an unverified contact.

What support can and cannot do
An exchange or wallet provider may be able to inspect its own records, explain a transfer’s status, or apply a limited internal recovery procedure. It cannot reverse a confirmed blockchain transaction merely by changing its status. Blockchain.com, for example, describes limited recovery attempts for certain unsupported or incorrect transfers to its own accounts while warning that ordinary network transfers are irreversible; see its unsupported-crypto recovery policy. Policies and eligibility vary by provider.
Choose the next step based on your situation
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| Exchange-side transfer with no hash available | Ask the sending platform for its internal status and whether an on-chain transaction has been created. |
| Unconfirmed transaction; wallet explicitly supports a fee bump or replacement | Follow the wallet’s official, chain-specific instructions. The result is not guaranteed. |
| Confirmed transfer; recipient is known | Contact the recipient and ask whether they can return the funds. |
| Confirmed transfer; address belongs to an exchange or service | Contact that provider through its official support channel and ask whether its policy covers the transfer. |
| Wrong network or unknown address | Contact the receiving service if identifiable, but expect recovery to depend on its capabilities and policy. |
| Someone asks for a fee or wallet secrets to recover funds | Stop contact, do not pay or share secrets, and preserve the messages and transaction details. |
Protect yourself from recovery scams
People who have already lost funds are often targeted by scammers posing as recovery agents, lawyers, or law enforcement. The FBI warns that private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency. Exchanges freeze accounts through their own processes or in response to legal process, not because a private agent promises it can compel them. Read the FBI IC3 recovery-scam warning.
