For crypto you plan to hold for years, compare wallets by who controls the keys, which assets and networks they support, how recovery works, and how safely you can maintain the setup. A self-custody hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline and reduce online exposure, but it does not prevent loss, theft, or mistakes. The right choice is one you can use and recover safely.
What does a crypto wallet actually store?
Crypto assets are recorded on their respective blockchains; a wallet manages the keys used to authorize transactions. The wallet application, account, and keys are related but distinct parts of that process, as explained by ethereum.org’s wallet guide. A device failure does not by itself erase blockchain records, but access to self-custodied assets depends on having the necessary keys or a valid recovery method.

What is the difference between a hot wallet and a cold wallet?
A hot wallet is connected to the internet during normal use, which is convenient for frequent transactions but can increase exposure to online attacks. A cold wallet keeps signing keys offline; a hardware wallet is one common form. Bitcoin.org describes cold storage as protecting keys from online attacks and as its safer choice for long-term storage, while ethereum.org also describes hardware wallets as an offline option. This is risk reduction, not a guarantee against theft or loss.
Some setups use an offline device to sign a transaction and an online device to broadcast it. Check how the specific wallet handles signing and whether the connected computer or phone can authorize a spend without the offline device. If a signing device displays transaction details, review the destination and amount on that device before approving.

What is self-custody, and who should control the keys?
With self-custody, you control the private keys and take responsibility for protecting them and their backups. A custodial service holds the keys for you; it may offer conventional account recovery, but your access also depends on the provider’s security, solvency, and policies. Neither approach eliminates risk. Choose based on whether you are prepared to manage key security and recovery yourself or prefer to rely on a service.

| What to check | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Custody | Who controls the private keys? What happens to access if a company changes its service or policies? |
| Assets and networks | Does the wallet support each coin, token, blockchain, and network feature you use? Verify current support for the exact device, application, and network rather than relying on a broad “multi-coin” claim. |
| Key isolation and signing | Do signing keys stay offline? How are transaction details reviewed? Can an online device authorize a transaction on its own? |
| Recovery | What exactly is backed up, and how do you restore access after device failure? Is there a recovery phrase or another method? |
| Security and transparency | Is software or source code available for review? Are security tests documented? Is the product actively maintained, and are update and support channels clear? |
| Long-term usability | Can you safely operate or restore the wallet after a long period without using it? Is the recovery procedure documented and understandable? |
| Privacy and advanced controls | Do you need privacy features or multisignature support? Can you manage the additional keys, devices, and recovery steps those controls require? |

A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase—is highly sensitive information that can restore access to a self-custody wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the associated assets. Ethereum.org’s guidance is explicit: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” A legitimate support worker or website should not need your phrase.

- Follow the exact wallet’s official recovery instructions and confirm what its backup covers before transferring substantial funds.
- Keep recovery information private and securely offline. Do not photograph it or save it in cloud storage.
- Consider how to avoid a single-location failure without making the backup easier for someone else to find. The appropriate method depends on the wallet; no particular backup material is mandatory or universally compatible.
- Never type a recovery phrase into a website or give it to someone claiming to provide support.
If the device is lost or damaged, a valid backup may let you restore access using the wallet’s recovery procedure. If both access and recovery information are lost, self-custodied funds may be unrecoverable; a wallet provider generally cannot retrieve a phrase it never held.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use more than one wallet?
Yes. One practical arrangement is a convenient hot wallet for a small amount used regularly and a separate cold-storage wallet for longer-term savings. Each wallet has its own keys and recovery needs, so document and protect each backup separately. Keep only the amount you are comfortable exposing to the risks of an internet-connected wallet.

How to put a long-term wallet plan into practice
- List what you hold. Record the coins, tokens, and networks you actually use, then verify that the wallet supports each one.
- Choose the custody model. Decide whether you want direct control of keys and the associated backup responsibility, or a custodial service with its own company and policy risks.
- Check recovery before funding. Read the wallet’s official restoration instructions and learn what happens if the device is lost, damaged, or replaced.
- Set up and test carefully. Follow the manufacturer’s official setup guidance. If you are unfamiliar with the workflow, practice with a small amount and a test transaction before moving substantial holdings.
- Protect access and verify transactions. Keep recovery information offline and private; confirm the destination address and transaction details before signing. Ethereum transactions are irreversible.
- Plan for maintenance. Know where authentic updates and support are published, and keep your recovery plan usable if you stop using the device for a long time.
When a hardware wallet may not be the right choice
Hardware storage may be a poor fit if you cannot reliably protect a recovery backup, if your assets or required networks are unsupported, or if the recovery and signing process is too difficult for you to maintain. Hardware wallets can also be less suitable for mobile use, as Bitcoin.org notes in its wallet chooser. A custodial option or a simpler arrangement may better match your needs, provided you understand the trust placed in the provider. No wallet category removes the need to verify support, recovery, and operating practices.
