When a key college football player is unavailable, a coach may promote one backup, divide the work among several players, or change personnel and assignments. The depth chart shows who is positioned to step in, but it does not by itself reveal how many snaps that player will get—or how much the absence will affect the team. The likely impact depends on the missing player’s responsibilities, the replacement’s preparation, the depth behind them, and the opponent’s matchup.
What changes when a starter is out?
The first change is usually to the unit’s allocation of practice reps and game responsibilities. A reserve may move into the first-team role, while another player takes the reserve’s former spot. Coaches can also distribute assignments across a group rather than make a simple one-for-one substitution.

Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez described younger and older players getting quality reps as an opportunity to improve the group. Georgia coordinators have likewise described monitoring position-by-position reps during practice competition. Those examples show why a listed backup is a starting point for understanding the change—not proof of a fixed game plan.
Who steps in: the backup, a rotation, or a different look?
Coaches have several ways to cover a missing player’s work. Which one makes sense depends on the player’s role and the personnel available around them.
#1 Best Overall
Promote one backup
A direct replacement is most straightforward when a reserve has practiced the same position and can handle its assignments. Previous game snaps and familiarity with the role can help indicate readiness, but a depth-chart listing alone does not establish how prepared a player is or how much they will play.
Rotate several players
A coaching staff may share the workload among multiple players, especially if it wants to use different skill sets or preserve depth during a game. Martinez said Tennessee needed enough depth to play several corners, safeties, and STAR players. That is an example of the value coaches place on having options at multiple positions, not a universal rotation rule.

Adjust personnel or responsibilities
If the available players do not duplicate the absent player’s role, a team may use different personnel or redistribute assignments. That can change how the unit functions, including who handles particular responsibilities or communication. Indiana players, discussing injury adjustments, emphasized knowing each player’s job and having everyone prepared on the installs.

To assess what an absence could mean, start with the work the player actually does—not just their name or position. Then look for evidence about who is prepared to absorb that work and whether the staff expects a rotation or a tactical adjustment.

- Role and workload: Consider the player’s snaps, packages, assignments, and communication responsibilities. A starter’s absence matters in proportion to the duties the team must still cover.
- Replacement experience: Previous snaps in the same role and practice reps can offer clues about readiness. They do not guarantee equivalent performance.
- Depth and role clarity: A unit with several prepared options has more ways to distribute work. Indiana players described preparation and knowing assignments as part of their response to injuries.
- Scheme fit and opponent: The cost of a change depends in part on whether the replacement can execute the same responsibilities and what the upcoming opponent asks that unit to do.
- Coaching plan: Watch for comments about first-team reps, a planned rotation, or adjusted responsibilities. Treat them as indications, not certainty about the eventual game plan.
There is no general performance estimate here for losing a starter at a particular position. The available examples support looking at preparation, depth, role execution, and matchup; they do not quantify an average effect.
What “next man up” does—and does not—mean
“Next man up” describes the expectation that another player will take responsibility. It is not a promise that the team will perform exactly as before. Indiana linebacker Isaiah Jones stated the standard this way: “If one guys goes down, there should be no let-off and no difference in the guy that steps in.” Indiana player Rodney Randle described the adjustment as depending on coaching and teammates knowing what to do: “Yeah. It comes down to coaching, having the guys around me knowing what to do, the ‘next man up’ idea, and we just play off of each other.”

Indiana’s January 9, 2026, athletics account reported that after Stephen Daley’s injury, the team held Alabama to 23 rushing yards and 193 total yards in that game. That is one team’s account of one game, not evidence that absences generally have no effect or that every replacement will match a starter’s contribution.

Availability information is specific to a team, game, and reporting system. For teams participating in the 2025–26 College Football Playoff, the CFP policy required an availability report three days before each game, daily updates, and a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. Pre-game and game-day designations differ. These rules apply to that playoff season, not automatically to every college football game.
