Stop before you pay, connect a wallet, enter recovery details, or sign anything. If you cannot confirm a crypto promotion code or presale through contact details you found independently, do not use it. Crypto transfers may be difficult or impossible to reverse, and recovery after fraud or theft is not assured.
Pause the offer and protect your wallet
Do not transfer cryptocurrency, connect a wallet, enter a seed phrase or private key, or sign an unexplained transaction while the offer is unverified. A request for a seed phrase or private key is a serious warning sign: anyone who obtains those credentials may be able to control the wallet. The CFTC says it will not ask for a private key or seed phrase and advises consumers not to pay out of pocket to recover investment funds. CFTC: Beware Imposters Posing as CFTC Officials.

Do not pay an additional fee to unlock tokens, release a presale allocation, or recover money you already sent. Treat a new payment demand as a reason to stop, not as proof that the original offer is legitimate.
How to check the code or presale independently
- Find the project without using the promotion’s link. Search for the claimed project and promoter yourself, then locate the project’s official website and published contact details. Search the names alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” A lack of complaints does not establish that an offer is safe.
- Check for inconsistencies. Compare the offer’s website and claims with independently found project information. The CFTC recommends checking matters such as a site’s age against its claims and whether a stated business address plausibly matches the operation. These checks can reveal concerns, but they cannot prove legitimacy. See the CFTC customer advisory on digital coins and tokens.
- Ask the project to confirm the exact offer. Use only a contact channel published on the independently located official site. Ask whether the specific code or presale is real, and request confirmation of its terms, sale dates, receiving address, and token contract address. Do not treat a reply from the account, link, QR code, or support contact included with the promotion as independent confirmation.
- Read the offer documents. Look for the intended use of funds, whether and when money can be returned, what rights the token provides, who the promoters and affiliates are, and any registration information. Save copies of the offer and documents. Token rights and the facts surrounding an offering affect its legal treatment; a document or registration claim alone does not authenticate the offer.
- Stop if the details still do not match. If the project’s independent channels cannot confirm the offer, or contradict its terms or payment details, do not proceed.
Regulator guidance describes due-diligence steps; it does not provide a universal registry that can verify every presale, promo code, website, or token contract.

Warning signs are reasons for caution, not proof by themselves
- Promises of guaranteed returns, high returns with little or no risk, or claims that an investment cannot lose. The CFTC states, “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” The SEC’s crypto-asset investor alert also describes common fraud warning signs.
- Pressure to act immediately, hype, or instructions to rely on online tips rather than independently checking the offer.
- Requests for wallet secrets, unexplained transaction signatures, or extra payments to claim tokens or recover funds.
- Conflicting names, terms, dates, receiving addresses, or token contract details between the promotion and information found through the project’s independent channels.
A polished website or white paper does not remove risks such as fraud, project failure, limited ability to sell, or theft. Verification checks are due diligence, not a guarantee.
Legal rules depend on the offer and your location
There is no basis to determine the authenticity or legal status of an unidentified offer without its project, token, terms, and relevant jurisdiction. The CFTC notes that token rights, promoter promises, and the surrounding facts can matter to whether federal securities laws apply. That does not mean every token or presale has the same status.

For UK consumers, the FCA says its financial-promotion regime applies to firms marketing cryptoassets to UK consumers regardless of where the firm is based or the technology used. It advises consumers to check its cryptoassets guidance and Warning List. This UK guidance should not be treated as a rule for other countries, nor as confirmation that a particular promotion is genuine.
If you suspect fraud, preserve details and report it
Keep the promotion text, URL, account names, messages, wallet addresses, and transaction details that you already have. Do not revisit a suspicious site or interact with it to gather more evidence if that could expose your credentials or funds.

In the United States, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov; the CFTC accepts complaints at CFTC.gov/complaint; and the SEC lists a reporting route at sec.gov/tcr. Which route is most appropriate depends on what happened and the product or conduct involved.
A 2026 CFTC advisory, attributing its figure to FBI IC3, reports more than $388 million in reported losses from crypto ATM scams in 2025 and notes that such losses may be underreported. That figure is about crypto ATM scams, not crypto presales or promotion codes. See CFTC: Pause Before You Pay.
