Choose by device capacity and study task, not by a general benchmark or parameter count alone. The options below are candidates to evaluate, not a ranked list of exam performers.

Model size is only one part of the hardware decision. Parameter counts do not by themselves tell you how much memory a particular quantized model will use in a specific application. Begin with a variant that runs comfortably; move to a larger one only if it gives a useful improvement and your device has capacity.
Can a local AI quiz you from your notes?
Yes, local document-chat workflows are available, although the exact file support depends on the application and model. LM Studio documents chatting with local documents and requires downloading model weights first. LM Studio’s local document-chat documentation Ollama announced desktop file drag-and-drop, including PDFs, on July 30, 2025; its announcement also describes image input and notes that longer context settings use more memory. A practical study session can use a short excerpt from a lecture or textbook as the source, then ask for an explanation, quiz, or critique of an attempted answer. For exam practice, try answering first and ask the model to identify gaps in your reasoning afterward. These are useful ways to structure practice, not proven methods for raising exam results.
- Provide the relevant notes or excerpt and ask for a plain-language explanation of a specific concept.
- Ask for a short quiz based only on that material, and answer each question before requesting the explanation.
- Write an answer in your own words, then ask the model to identify missing reasoning or unsupported steps.
- Check any correction against the original course material. Verify quotations, dates, formulas, and answer keys rather than treating them as authoritative.
How to compare models on your own computer
A fair comparison uses the same source material and prompts for each candidate. Test on the device you will actually use, because response speed and memory use depend on the setup.

- Hardware fit: Does the model run reliably, and does it leave enough memory for your other work?
- Study materials: Can the application handle the formats you need, including PDFs or images if relevant?
- Offline behavior: Can you use the downloaded model without a network connection?
- Answer quality: Does it explain your course concepts accurately and expose mistakes in your reasoning?
- Language: Does it understand and respond well in the language used by your notes and exam?
- Practicality: Is setup manageable, and are the model’s current terms suitable for your use?
Use a small set of representative questions from different parts of the syllabus. Keep the prompt and provided notes constant, check every factual answer against course materials, and note latency and memory use. This gives you evidence for your own needs; it is not a substitute for an independent comparative exam benchmark.
What does “private” mean for a local model?
With local inference, the model weights run on your device after they have been downloaded. LM Studio says it can operate offline once model files are present, and documents local document chat. LM Studio product overview A local model can therefore avoid sending a study prompt to a hosted model provider, but that alone does not establish that an entire setup is private.
