An offline AI study assistant can keep prompts and documents on your device and work without Wi-Fi after setup; a cloud chatbot sends requests to a hosted service and may offer stronger convenience or features, depending on the provider. Neither option is automatically more private, accurate, or cheaper. The right choice depends on the exact app, model, plan, computer, and study task.
What “offline” and “cloud” mean in practice
With local inference, the model runs on your computer rather than on a provider’s servers. LM Studio says its downloaded models run locally, and its core chat and document-chat functions can work without internet once the model is on the machine. Its documentation puts it this way: “Once you have an LLM onto your machine, the model will run locally and you should be good to go entirely offline.”

That does not mean every part of the setup is offline. Searching LM Studio’s model catalog, downloading model files or runtimes, and checking for updates require an internet connection. Nor does local inference establish that every plugin, integration, or operating-system feature is network-free.

A cloud chatbot processes requests using a hosted model. This can avoid local model downloads and hardware constraints, but requires connectivity and makes handling of prompts and uploaded files subject to the service’s policies and settings.

Privacy: compare the actual data path and policy
When local processing helps
For LM Studio’s documented local chat and document-chat functions, prompts and documents are processed on the machine rather than sent to a hosted model. That can reduce transmission of study material to a service provider. It is a useful distinction for sensitive notes, drafts, or course documents, but it is not a blanket privacy guarantee for the entire computer or every connected feature.
When cloud privacy depends on the plan
Cloud data practices differ by service and account type. OpenAI states on its Business Data Privacy page: “We don’t train our models on your organization’s data by default.” That statement applies to the organization data covered by that page; it should not be generalized to consumer ChatGPT or to other providers.
Before uploading course materials, check the current data controls, retention policy, and institutional account terms. Also check whether connected tools or file-upload features have separate handling. For student records or restricted course content, follow your school’s policy as well as the chatbot provider’s terms.

Accuracy: test the task, not the category
The available evidence does not establish that offline or cloud study assistants are generally more accurate. There is no comparable independent test here of named local and cloud assistants performing the same educational tasks.
An official OpenAI gpt-oss model card reports that gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b underperform o4-mini on SimpleQA and PersonQA. That is a result for those named models on those evaluations; it does not rank all local models against all cloud models, and it is not a direct measure of tutoring quality.
A fair way to compare assistants
- Choose one real study task. For example, explain a concept, check a worked solution, summarize a chapter, or answer a question that needs current information.
- Use the same source material. Give each assistant the same passage, problem, or notes, and use the exact model versions you are considering.
- Check support, not just fluency. Verify whether claims are grounded in the supplied text and whether any citations point to the relevant passages.
- Test uncertainty handling. Include a question the source does not answer and see whether the assistant acknowledges the gap rather than inventing a response.
A model that is useful for summarizing your own notes may not be the right choice for checking current facts or solving a subject-specific problem. No broad accuracy percentage for offline versus cloud study assistants is established.

Costs: include the computer you already own
“Local is free” and “cloud always requires a subscription” are both too simple. LM Studio lists a free plan with local model support and an optional Bionic+ plan at $20 USD per month on its current pricing page, accessed in 2026. Ollama lists local model use alongside separate cloud usage credits and subscriptions. Cloud plans also vary by provider and account, so compare the terms for the service you would actually use.

For local use, include the cost of suitable hardware if your current computer cannot handle the model and context size you need. If your existing device is adequate, there may be no new hardware cost. For cloud use, consider any subscription or usage fees and how often you expect to use the service.
Local model requirements: memory is only a starting point
LM Studio’s current system requirements, accessed in 2026, recommend 16 GB or more of RAM for Apple Silicon Macs and at least 16 GB for Windows. The vendor says an 8 GB Mac may work with smaller models and modest context sizes. These are software recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular speed or of compatibility with every model.
Model size and context requirements affect what will fit and how it performs. Check the requirements for the specific model before choosing a computer; do not assume that meeting a RAM recommendation ensures a fast or suitable study experience.
Choose using five practical checks
| Check | What to find out |
|---|---|
| Data handling | Where prompts and files are processed, what is retained, and whether the policy applies to your exact plan and account. |
| Connectivity | Whether the model and the tools you need work offline, and which setup, catalog, update, or integration features need internet. |
| Study performance | How the exact model versions handle your subject and task when given the same material and checked against the same rubric. |
| Computer fit | The model’s memory and context needs, and whether your device can run it acceptably. |
| Total cost | Any subscription or usage fees, plus hardware costs if an upgrade is necessary. |
If offline access and keeping documents on-device are central, a local setup such as LM Studio is worth considering, provided your computer can run the chosen model. If you prefer not to manage model downloads and your tasks work well with a hosted service, compare cloud plans and their data terms. For accuracy, try the exact options on your own material rather than selecting by category label.
