Check the responsible land manager’s latest notice for the exact trail segment, any official diversion, and routes confirmed open. If no authorized alternative is clear, turn back, ask staff, or choose another confirmed-open destination; do not go around a barrier or assume a visible path, beach, or low-tide route is safe or permitted.
What to do when you reach a closure
- Stop outside the boundary. Read the sign and follow staff instructions. Do not cross, climb over, or go around a barrier, even if the route beyond it looks passable. BC Parks tells Juan de Fuca visitors to follow posted signs and field personnel and to stay on designated trails; its guidance is specific to that park, but the instruction at a posted closure is clear. Read the BC Parks Juan de Fuca guidance.
- Identify exactly what is closed. Match the notice to the trail segment, spur, pier, or viewpoint you planned to visit. Check any stated hours, dates, cause, and whether the restriction applies to the whole route or just one feature.
- Check the managing authority’s current notice. Use the relevant park service, municipal government, or official trail authority—not an old map, social post, or third-party listing—to confirm the status and any diversion. Follow the notice’s instructions rather than inferring access from nearby open paths.
- Choose only a confirmed-open option. Use a diversion designated by the authority, take another route it confirms is open, ask staff, or turn back. Do not treat an unofficial path as a shortcut or substitute.
- Recheck close to departure. Weather, erosion, maintenance, and access notices can change. Review the latest advisory before travelling, especially for remote or strenuous routes.
How to find out whether the closure applies to your route
Start with the land manager responsible for the specific place. Read the full notice, not only a map pin or headline: a closure may apply to a short section, a named spur, a structure, or an entire route, and its timing may be limited to specified hours or remain in effect until further notice. For example, a 2025 Point Reyes determination defined a particular Coast Trail segment and closure hours for restoration work; it is an illustration of how precise a notice can be, not a current status report. See the Point Reyes temporary closure determination dated April 3, 2025.

Official pages can also distinguish a closed feature from access that remains available elsewhere in the same area. The National Park Service’s Point Reyes trail advisory describes the Arch Rock Spur as permanently closed and identifies maintained trails that remain open nearby. Check that advisory for current conditions; its details apply to Point Reyes, not to other coastal parks.

Why a coastal closure should not be treated as a suggestion
Coastal hazards are not always visible or easy to judge from a trail. The National Park Service warns that “Bluffs along the California coast are inherently unstable.” Around Point Reyes’ Arch Rock overlook, part of the area collapsed on March 21, 2015, killing one person and injuring another. The park says the spur and area leading up to it remain closed because the land may be unstable and further collapse or erosion could occur. Do not approach a cliff edge or closed structure to inspect it.
A barrier can also protect visitors during work or while conditions are assessed. A closure’s stated cause does not let visitors predict when the route will reopen. The responsible authority’s update—not a visitor’s view of the path—is the basis for deciding whether access has resumed.

Closures differ, so check the notice rather than guessing
- Temporary work or limited hours: A notice may restrict a particular section during specified hours, as in the 2025 Point Reyes restoration determination.
- Safety closure with no stated reopening date: Atlantic Beach’s Tide Views Preserve page says Sunset Pier was temporarily closed for safety concerns and would remain closed until further notice. The city’s notice, dated July 30, 2026, says: “For your safety, please do not enter or use the pier while it is closed.” Check the City of Atlantic Beach’s Tide Views Preserve page.
- Diversion after damage or construction: The official Wales Coast Path temporary diversions page publishes site-specific instructions for closures related to severe weather, landslides, or construction. Listed routes and dates change, so use the current notice for the location you plan to visit.
- Permanent or open-ended closure: Point Reyes’ Arch Rock Spur is identified as permanently closed on the park advisory. Do not assume that a nearby route reaches the closed viewpoint or provides access to the same feature.
When nearby routes are open but the viewpoint is not
Use the authority’s description to decide whether an open alternative suits your plans; nearby access does not necessarily reach the closed viewpoint. In a November 4, 2024 release, California State Parks reported that Limekiln was open for day use and that the Limekiln Trail to Pitkins Curve Trail and ocean-view overlook was open, while Hare Creek and Falls Trail remained closed. That is a dated example of mixed access within one park, not a report of Limekiln’s current 2026 conditions. Read the November 4, 2024 Limekiln reopening release.
Before choosing an alternative, verify that it is officially authorized and currently open. Where the authority provides the information, also check route length and difficulty, exposure to cliffs, surf, tides, or weather, opening hours, transport and parking, and whether the route reaches the same viewpoint or offers a different coastal experience. If those details or the route’s status are unclear, ask park staff or choose another destination the authority confirms is open.

If there is no clear diversion
- Turn back rather than testing a barrier or trying an unofficial access point.
- Ask park or site staff which routes are open, if staff are available.
- Choose another destination only after checking its official access information.
- Do not assume a beach, shoreline, or low-tide route is safe or legal unless the authority specifically identifies it and any stated conditions are met.
For remote trails, treat access planning as part of the safety decision. BC Parks describes Juan de Fuca’s marine trail as strenuous and remote and asks visitors to plan for challenging conditions; its seasonal access and conditions are specific to that park. Check the Juan de Fuca Park page and advisories before setting out.
