Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by identifying what “lag” means in your city: low frame rate usually calls for lowering render distance, while delayed actions, slow-moving mobs or other gameplay slowdowns point toward simulation load. Then reduce unnecessary entities and demanding visuals in the busiest districts. The right settings depend on your edition, device and whether the world is multiplayer; there is no single slider value that fits every city.
First identify whether the problem is FPS or gameplay slowdown
Low FPS means the game is struggling to draw the scene on your device. Gameplay or tick slowdown means the game is struggling to update mechanics such as entities and other simulation. These can overlap, especially in a crowded area, but the fixes are not interchangeable.

- If the picture stutters or FPS is low: lower render distance first. This reduces how much of the world the client must draw.
- If mobs, redstone or other mechanics seem delayed: check simulation load, including entity-heavy areas and the simulation-distance setting.
- If both happen: make one change at a time and revisit the same busy district, so you can tell which adjustment helped.
Microsoft Learn describes render distance and simulation distance as distinct settings, with simulation distance affecting gameplay activity and potentially both client and server workload. Its guidance is Bedrock-oriented; Minecraft’s Java release notes also describe a simulation-distance setting, but implementation and labels can vary by edition and version. Check the current settings in your own game rather than assuming the same options or ranges apply everywhere: Microsoft Learn: Simulation Distance, Render Distance, and Ticking Areas and Minecraft Java release notes: Caves & Cliffs: Part II.

Lower render distance when drawing the city is the bottleneck
Render distance controls how far out the client draws the world. In a dense city, distant buildings and terrain can add a large amount of visual work without helping you navigate the street or district you are currently in. Reduce render distance in the video or graphics settings, then check the same view again. The trade-off is a shorter visible horizon; distant structures may disappear sooner.

Do not copy a value from another player as a universal target. Microsoft notes that Bedrock defaults depend on the device and documents configurable ranges for creators, not a single recommended retail setting for every platform. Start from the setting your edition offers, lower it only as much as needed, and balance smoother drawing against the distance you want to see. The Bedrock-specific guidance is in Microsoft Learn’s distance documentation.
Adjust simulation distance only for simulation-related load
Simulation distance determines how far from the player gameplay updates run; it is not simply another name for render distance. Lowering it can reduce the area where mechanics remain active and can ease CPU and server work, but it also changes how far away those mechanics operate. If your main complaint is only low FPS, try render distance before reducing simulation distance.

Thin out entities in the busiest districts
A crowded plaza, livestock pen, villager trading hall or mob-filled farm can load more than its visible detail. Microsoft Learn advises creators to “Keep an eye on entity count, complexity and density.” Many entities in one place can increase server-side pathfinding or AI work as well as client rendering demands: Microsoft Learn: Improving performance and resource usage.

- Remove animals, mobs or other entities that no longer serve a gameplay purpose.
- Avoid keeping large groups of pathfinding entities close together if the district does not need them.
- Look for entities left in loaded areas, including pens or farms that remain active while you are nearby.
- Keep the visual identity of a district where it matters, but avoid using high entity density everywhere just for decoration.
For Bedrock worlds, keep ticking areas small and purposeful
Bedrock ticking areas keep designated parts of a world active independently of a player’s normal proximity. They can be useful for specific world functions, but unnecessary areas keep more of the world running than needed. Microsoft Learn documents a maximum of 10 separate ticking areas per world, with up to 100 chunks in each area; those are configuration limits, not recommended targets or a performance benchmark.
- Review which ticking areas the world actually needs.
- Reduce each area to the smallest area required for its function.
- Remove ticking areas that are no longer used.
Microsoft warns that larger or more numerous ticking areas increase performance cost. This advice and the stated limits are Bedrock-specific: Microsoft Learn: Simulation Distance, Render Distance, and Ticking Areas.

Reduce demanding visual effects if distance changes are not enough
Particles and Vibrant Visuals can be comparatively demanding. If you want to preserve a useful render distance, try lowering particle density or disabling Vibrant Visuals, if your edition and device offer those options. You may lose some atmosphere or visual detail, so compare the result in the districts where performance is worst. Microsoft also describes fog as a creator option for limiting the apparent set of visible objects; it is not a universal player setting: Microsoft Learn’s visual and distance guidance.
Make changes in a repeatable order
- Visit a known busy spot. Use the same street, plaza or farm for each check.
- Change render distance if the symptom is low FPS or stuttering while looking around.
- Reduce entity density where many mobs or other entities are grouped or pathfinding.
- Review simulation distance if gameplay activity is slow, keeping in mind that this changes where mechanics run.
- For Bedrock only, audit ticking areas and remove excessive scope or unused areas.
- Try visual-effect reductions if you still need relief, noting the loss of particles or visual effects.
Change one setting or world feature at a time. That makes it easier to distinguish an improvement from a change that merely makes the city look less detailed or keeps fewer areas active.

What these fixes can and cannot establish
The official guidance explains likely sources of load and the trade-offs of the settings, but it does not provide FPS measurements for large city worlds or prove that one adjustment will produce a specific gain. A hardware or hosting recommendation also cannot be chosen responsibly without knowing the edition, device, multiplayer setup and actual bottleneck. Diagnose the symptom first; settings and world-content changes are the supported starting points for this title.
