Start by verifying the notice and finding out exactly what information was exposed. Then take the steps that match it: change affected passwords, check financial accounts, or review your credit if your Social Security number may have been involved. A breach notice does not by itself mean someone has misused your information.
1. Verify the notice and identify what was exposed
Use the company’s known website or app to confirm the incident. Don’t rely on links or phone numbers in an unexpected email, text, or call; navigate to the official site yourself and use its published contact details.

Read the notice closely and record:
- The company and date of the notice
- What information was involved and the period affected
- Whether the company knows of misuse
- What the company has done and what it recommends you do
- Any free protection offer, its terms, and how long it lasts
- Where the company will post updates and how to contact it
If the notice does not say what was exposed or what action is appropriate, ask the company through a verified channel. For tailored next steps, use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov data-breach resource.

Email address, password, login, or PIN
Change the exposed password or PIN, and change it anywhere else you reused it. Use a different, unique password for each account. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery checklist advises changing affected logins, passwords, and PINs. If you can’t access an account, use the service’s official account-recovery process.

Social Security number
Review your credit reports for accounts or inquiries you don’t recognize. Consider placing a credit freeze or fraud alert. A freeze restricts access to your credit report for most prospective creditors, making it harder for someone to open new credit in your name; you may need to lift it temporarily when applying for credit. A fraud alert asks creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before extending credit. These are options, not paid products.
Payment card or bank information
Check recent transactions and keep watching for unfamiliar activity. Contact the bank or card issuer using the number on your card, a statement, or its official website or app. Ask whether the account or card should be blocked, replaced, or closed; the right response depends on what was exposed and the institution’s guidance. The FTC’s health-breach guidance also emphasizes following up in a way that fits the information involved.

Health or insurance information
Follow the notice’s specific instructions. If the breach may involve access to an online account or insurance claims, contact the provider or insurer through a known channel and ask what to check and whether any account protections are available. There is no single remedy for every kind of health information.
Evidence your information has already been misused
If you find an account, transaction, or other activity you did not authorize, report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan it provides. Depending on the situation, consider a fraud alert or credit freeze as well.

3. Assess the company’s protection offer
If the company offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft protection, review the terms and consider using it. Check what information or reports it monitors, how long the offer lasts, and whether identity-restoration assistance is included. Monitoring can alert you to some activity, but it does not undo the exposure or guarantee that every kind of fraud will be detected. Buying a paid service is not a required breach-response step.
4. Keep monitoring the accounts that matter
For the type of information named in the notice, keep checking relevant account statements, transactions, and credit reports for unfamiliar activity. Follow company updates through its verified website or app, and contact the relevant institution promptly if you see something you don’t recognize.
