PUA protection can block advertising software and other unwanted apps, while browser download safeguards add a separate layer. Windows 11 already includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which can optionally block PUA; a paid product is not automatically necessary.
What adware protection should cover
Adware is not always classified as conventional malware. Microsoft describes potentially unwanted apps as a grey area: some show unwanted ads, offer unexpected applications, or perform other unwanted actions. Advertising software that inserts ads into webpages is one example. Microsoft’s explanation of potentially unwanted software helps clarify why an antivirus product’s general malware score does not, by itself, establish how well it handles adware.

When evaluating a product, look for a clearly documented PUA or potentially unwanted software feature. Check whether it blocks or quarantines detected files, or merely alerts you and leaves the decision to you. Product documentation should explain what happens when a PUA is detected and whether protection covers attempts to download, move, run, or install it.
Check Windows’ built-in protection first
Windows 11 includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft’s endpoint guidance says Defender can detect and block PUA, quarantine blocked files, and block attempts to download, move, run, or install detected PUA. Whether that protection is enabled can depend on device settings and management context, so verify the configuration on the PC rather than assuming it is active.

If another antivirus app is installed and turned on, Microsoft says Defender Antivirus turns off automatically; it turns back on if that app is uninstalled. Avoid assuming that installing a second product simply layers its antivirus engine on top of Defender.
Review the Edge download setting separately
Antivirus scanning and browser protection are related but distinct. Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge can block PUA downloads and related URLs through Defender SmartScreen. The Microsoft guidance documents this feature as off by default in the Edge configuration it describes, so check the current browser setting if you rely on it. Enabling browser protection can complement antivirus scanning, but it is not evidence that every other browser has the same feature or default.

Use independent test results carefully
Independent lab results can help compare protection, performance, and usability, but first check the operating system, product version, and test period. Also identify what the lab actually tested: a broad malware-protection score is not an adware- or PUA-specific detection rate.

It says products were current publicly available versions on default settings and were tested in realistic threat scenarios. Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability in that test. These are broad category scores, not adware-only results. Scores change between test periods, so compare products from the same cycle rather than mixing dates. In AV-TEST’s November–December 2025 Windows 11 test, the same Defender product version, 4.18, scored 6.0/6 in each of the three categories. That historical result illustrates why a score needs its test period alongside it. AV-TEST’s 2025 methodology says each category is worth up to 6 points, for 18 overall; its approval seal requires at least 10 points and its Top Product award at least 17.5. Neither threshold turns a broad lab score into proof of PUA-specific detection. See the November–December 2025 results and methodology.
Compare products against the same checklist
Use product documentation and recent independent tests together. A lab result describes performance in the lab’s test scope; documentation can tell you whether a product explicitly handles PUA and what it does with a detection.

- PUA behavior: Does the vendor explicitly describe PUA or adware protection? Does the product block or quarantine, or only notify?
- Downloads and browser safeguards: Does the browser or suite block suspicious downloads and related URLs? Is the relevant feature enabled?
- Test fit: Is the result for your operating system and the current product version? Does the test cover PUA/adware specifically, or general protection?
- Trade-offs: Compare protection, performance, and usability within the same test period; a strong result in one category does not guarantee the same in another.
- Practical fit: Confirm supported devices, how easy settings are to manage, and the current price and renewal terms. Compare those costs with the built-in protection you already have.
Current prices, license terms, and availability vary and are not established by the lab results cited here. Confirm them directly with the vendor before choosing a paid product.

If unwanted software is already on the PC
Protection can help prevent unwanted apps, but it cannot guarantee that every existing infection will be removed. Microsoft’s recommended response is to remove software you do not need, update Defender security intelligence, and run a full scan. If unwanted software remains, consider Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans outside the usual Windows session.

- Uninstall unwanted software: Remove apps you do not recognize or no longer need using Windows’ installed-app settings.
- Update security intelligence: In Windows Security, check for updates to Microsoft Defender Antivirus security intelligence before scanning.
- Run a full scan: Start a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan and review any detections or actions it reports.
- Consider an offline scan: If unwanted software persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline. Save your work first, since the scan restarts the PC.
