You can cut down on robocalls without sending every unsaved number straight to voicemail. Use a screening option for unknown callers, turn on spam filtering where your phone or carrier offers it, and treat caller ID as a clue—not proof of who is calling. On iPhone, Ask Reason for Calling screens unsaved callers before the phone rings; Silence sends them to voicemail instead.
Screen unknown callers instead of silencing all of them
Blocking or silencing every number that is not in your contacts can also hide a call from a doctor’s office, school, delivery driver, or business. Screening is a better starting point if you want legitimate new callers to have a chance to reach you: the caller is asked for a reason before the phone rings, giving you more context before you answer.
Spam filtering is a separate layer. It acts on calls your carrier identifies as spam or fraud, but it cannot catch every scam call. Scammers can also fake the number or name shown on caller ID, so a familiar-looking display is not proof of identity. The FTC explains how robocalls and caller ID spoofing work.

- Open Settings → Apps → Phone.
- Under Screen Unknown Callers, choose Ask Reason for Calling. Unsaved callers are asked why they are calling before your phone rings.
- Leave the setting on Never if you want unsaved numbers to ring normally. Choose Silence only if you want those calls sent to voicemail.
- To filter calls your carrier identifies as spam or fraud, open Call Filtering and turn on the spam filter. Apple says filtered calls are silenced, sent to voicemail, and placed in the Spam list.
Apple notes that screening may use standard calling and data rates, does not screen calls while you are roaming, and turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. Add important numbers—such as family, schools, and doctors—to Contacts if you want them recognized without screening.
Choose a control that fits your phone service
Phone, carrier, and app features differ, so there is no single call-blocking setup that works for every line. The FTC recommends checking your phone company’s services and researching app-store ratings and independent reviews before installing a call-blocking app. Some apps are free; others charge. Options also depend on whether you use a mobile, traditional landline, or VoIP service. See the FTC’s overview of ways to reduce unwanted calls.

- Traditional landline: Ask the provider what call-blocking services are available. A physical call-blocking device may be an option, but check that it is compatible with your specific phone setup.
- VoIP: Ask the service provider about its available call controls; landline devices and mobile features may not apply.
The FTC’s advice is to compare options for your type of service, rather than assuming a feature available on one phone or network will work on another.

The National Do Not Call Registry is free and tells compliant telemarketers not to call registered numbers. The FTC says a number should appear on the Registry the day after registration, but it can take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop. Registration is not a technical call-blocking feature and will not stop scammers who disregard the law. Read the FTC’s National Do Not Call Registry FAQs for scope and registration details.

- COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Not every automated call is unlawful. The FTC says robocalls that try to sell something are generally illegal unless the company has the recipient’s direct written permission to call that way; some informational calls and other categories may be allowed, and state law may add rules. The Registry is useful against compliant sales callers, not a guarantee against all unwanted calls.

What to do when a robocall gets through
- Hang up on an unexpected recorded sales pitch. Do not press a key to speak to an operator or supposedly remove yourself from a list, and do not call back. Interacting can lead to more calls, and the displayed number may be spoofed. The FTC’s robocall guidance explains what to do.
- Report the call. At DoNotCall.gov, include your phone number, the displayed number—even if you suspect it was faked—any callback number, and the date and time if known. If you lost money, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Use the FCC complaint process when appropriate. The FCC accepts unwanted-call complaints, but it does not resolve individual complaints or stop every illegal call instantly. Its complaint guidance explains the agency’s role.
