What G-Shock Water-Resistance Ratings Mean for Swimming and Everyday Wear

A G-SHOCK marked 20 bar, WR20BAR, or commonly 200 m is designed for swimming and active everyday water use, according to Casio. The 200 m figure is an approximate depth equivalent for a pressure rating—not a promise that the watch can be worn at that depth. For scuba diving, Casio distinguishes standard G-SHOCK water resistance from FROGMAN models identified as having ISO-standard 200 m diving water resistance.

What 20 bar, WR20BAR and 200 m mean

Bar is a measure of pressure. Casio says that 20-bar water resistance is commonly associated with 200-meter water resistance, with the meter figure expressing an approximate water-depth equivalent. It does not mean an ordinary 20-bar G-SHOCK is guaranteed for use at 200 m. Casio describes the property as water resistance, not unlimited waterproofing. Casio’s water-resistance guidance explains the distinction.

Check the marking on your watch or its official product page rather than assuming all G-SHOCK watches share the same rating. For example, Casio lists 200-meter water resistance for the GA-2100SRS-7A; that specification applies to that model, not automatically to the whole range.

Can you swim or wear a G-SHOCK around water?

Casio says 20-bar G-SHOCK watches are designed for swimming and active water use. Its examples include surfing, jet skiing, showering and rain. The permitted activities depend on the watch’s own rating, so use the exact model’s instructions when in doubt.

Casio’s operating precautions for Module 5719 distinguish among watches with no BAR marking and those rated 5BAR, 10BAR or 20BAR. The table does not list swimming as suitable for a watch with no BAR marking, while it does list swimming as suitable for the three BAR-rated categories. Other activity permissions vary by category. Consult the Module 5719 operating precautions or, for another watch, that watch’s own manual.

Is a standard 200 m G-SHOCK suitable for scuba diving?

Do not treat a standard 200 m marking as equivalent to a dive-watch certification. Casio says standard G-SHOCK 200 m water resistance is intended for many water activities, but a watch for professional scuba diving should be specifically designed and tested for diving. Casio identifies FROGMAN models as having ISO-standard 200 m diving water resistance and points to the line for diving-oriented performance on its US water-resistant-watch collection page.

How to care for a watch after swimming

After exposure to salt water, chlorine, dirt or other residue, Casio recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water and drying it with a soft cloth. Follow the handling instructions for your exact module; do not press buttons underwater unless that model’s documentation explicitly allows it.
