What to Compare When Choosing GPUs for AI Model Training

Compare GPUs for AI model training by starting with the full memory footprint, then checking matched performance, software compatibility, system scaling, and cost per completed run.

Choose a GPU for the training job you actually plan to run—not for a peak-compute number or a generic “AI performance” label. First confirm that the job’s full memory footprint fits in usable VRAM; then compare workload-matched training results, software support, multi-GPU scaling, and the cost and practical limits of the complete system.

Define the training job before comparing GPUs

A useful GPU shortlist starts with a workload, not a model name alone. Training a model from scratch, fine-tuning it, and running LoRA are different jobs; sequence length, batch size, numerical precision, and training method also change what a GPU must handle. Record the target job so each candidate is assessed against the same requirements.

  • Model and method: identify the model and whether you will train it from scratch, fine-tune it, or use a method such as LoRA.
  • Precision: record the precision your framework and training code will use.
  • Sequence length and batch size: note the intended context length and number of examples processed together.
  • Target: define a completion-time or throughput goal, not just a desire for a “fast” GPU.
  • Software: list the framework, operating system, driver, libraries, and any project-specific kernels.
  • Deployment: decide whether the job must run on a workstation, a server, or rented cloud hardware, and set the budget for the whole setup.

These details make benchmark results interpretable and reveal whether a card is compatible with the code you intend to run.

Check memory fit before peak speed

VRAM is often the first pass-or-fail constraint. The model’s weights are only part of training memory: gradients, optimizer state, and intermediate activations also consume memory. Activations are affected by the batch size and sequence length, so a model that loads for inference—or whose weights appear to fit on paper—may still exceed memory during training.

Estimate the full job, with headroom

Estimate the memory needed for the exact model, training method, precision, sequence length, and batch size. Compare that requirement with the GPU’s usable VRAM, leaving room for runtime overhead and normal variation rather than aiming to fill every byte. If the job does not fit, first determine whether reducing batch size or sequence length is acceptable; those changes can affect the training setup and are not free substitutes for capacity.

Sharding or using multiple GPUs may make some jobs possible, but only when the chosen framework, training approach, and code support the relevant method. More GPUs do not automatically pool their memory into one larger, seamless space.

Compare performance only under matching conditions

Peak compute specifications and isolated benchmark scores do not predict how quickly every training job will finish. A meaningful comparison uses the same model and task, precision, batch size, sequence length, GPU count, software release, and system configuration. It should also measure the outcome you care about—such as time to complete a run or training throughput—rather than relying on a vendor’s broad performance label.

Published results show why configuration matters

Reported result Workload and configuration How to interpret it
3,385 tokens/sec/GPU AMD’s ROCm performance results page has an entry dated September 24, 2026: Llama 3.1 70B, FP8, batch size 6, sequence length 8192, on an eight-GPU MI355X server. A vendor-published result for that listed configuration, not a general MI355X speed rating or a head-to-head comparison. AMD ROCm performance results.
Just over 10 minutes on MI355X; nearly 28 minutes on MI300X AMD’s account of its MLPerf Training 5.1 result for Llama 2-70B LoRA in FP8. AMD’s report of a particular benchmark, not a verdict for other training workloads. The account attributes improvement in part to ROCm, precision, and kernel/compiler optimization. AMD MLPerf Training 5.1 discussion.
No comparable figure stated here NVIDIA’s June 16, 2026 account discusses its MLPerf Training 6.0 submissions, including GB300 systems, networking, CUDA graphs, and kernel/compiler work. Consult the underlying MLCommons submissions and match the workload, rules, hardware, and software before comparing results. NVIDIA MLPerf Training 6.0 account.

These examples use different workloads and test conditions, so their numbers should not be compared against one another as if they were a common ranking. Vendor results are useful evidence about the stated configuration; they do not establish a universal cross-vendor winner.

Verify the exact software stack

A GPU’s published specifications do not prove that your training code will work on it. Compatibility depends on the exact device, operating system, driver, framework version, supporting libraries, and any project-specific kernels. Verify those pieces together before buying or renting hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the vendor’s compatibility documentation for the exact GPU and software versions, not just the product family.
  • Check the framework and library versions required by your training project, including whether needed operations have supported kernels.
  • Confirm that the intended precision and multi-GPU training method are available in that stack.
  • Where possible, run a small representative job on the exact device and software configuration before committing to a larger purchase or long rental.

AMD’s ROCm 6.4.2 specifications page directs readers to a separate compatibility matrix; the hardware table by itself is not proof that a particular project or version is supported.

For multiple GPUs, evaluate the whole system

Multi-GPU training depends on communication as well as individual GPU speed. Interconnects and system topology affect how GPUs exchange data; the parallelism method and workload determine how much communication is required. Host CPU and memory, networking, power delivery, and cooling can also limit end-to-end throughput.

Ask for results on the intended multi-GPU system, not just a single-card specification. Check whether the benchmark uses the same GPU count and parallelism approach you expect to use, and compare the time for a completed job. If scaling efficiency is not reported, avoid assuming that doubling the GPU count halves training time.

Compare total cost and deployment fit

Compare the cost of a complete, usable setup rather than the GPU’s purchase price alone. A workstation or server may require compatible host hardware, power delivery, and cooling; support and availability can change the practical cost as well. For rented hardware, compare the rental cost over the time needed to complete the run. A useful decision metric is cost per completed training run, alongside whether the system meets the target time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Workstation: confirm the card fits the chassis and that the host and cooling can support the complete configuration.
  • Server: evaluate the system’s GPU topology, host resources, networking, power, and cooling together.
  • Cloud: compare the available GPU configuration and software environment with the workload and the expected rental duration.

Consumer or workstation cards and data-center accelerators may suit different deployment constraints. Do not assume an accelerator intended for a server is an ordinary retail purchase or that a card’s listed capacity establishes what a complete system will cost or require.

Make the shortlist decision

  1. Remove candidates that cannot fit the full training job with reasonable memory headroom.
  2. Remove candidates whose exact hardware and software combination does not support your framework, libraries, and training method.
  3. Compare the remaining options using reproducible results that match your workload and intended system, including multi-GPU behavior if relevant.
  4. Compare complete system or rental costs, power and cooling requirements, availability, and support against the target cost per completed run.

The best choice is the least costly supported configuration that fits the job with headroom, achieves the required throughput, and works within the deployment constraints. If no candidate has a benchmark matching your conditions, treat published numbers as clues—not a substitute for testing the intended setup.
