What to Compare Before Buying a PlayStation 5: Performance, Storage, and Features

A practical comparison of PS5 models: understand Pro enhancements, storage capacity and expansion, disc-drive compatibility, and display requirements.

Choose a PlayStation 5 by matching its game-specific performance features, storage, disc support, and display compatibility to how you actually play. Sony’s current US lineup lists a 1TB disc PS5, an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition, and a 2TB PS5 Pro; the Pro’s visual and frame-rate advantages apply to supported games, not every title.

How the current PS5 models compare

Sony’s US buying page lists these three configurations. Capacities are the listed built-in SSD sizes, not a promise that all of that space is available for games; the system reserves some storage. See Sony’s PS5 buying page and the CFI-21XX safety and regulatory guide.

Model Performance Listed built-in storage Disc support
PS5 disc console (CFI-21XX slim family) Standard PS5 performance; the CFI-21XX manual lists a 10 TFLOPS GPU. 1TB Built-in disc drive.
PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-21XX slim family) The CFI-21XX manual lists the same core CPU/GPU and memory as the disc version. 825GB No drive included; a compatible removable drive is supported on specified CFI-2000/2100 slim groups.
PS5 Pro Adds PSSR, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame-rate options in supported or enhanced games. 2TB Sold as an all-digital console; compatible removable drive sold separately.

The CPU, GPU, memory, and capacity figures for the first two models are specific to the CFI-21XX model family, not necessarily every earlier PS5 revision. Sony lists more than 100 PS5 titles as enhanced for Pro on its feature page accessed in 2026; the count is page-current and the feature set varies by game. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page also describes compatible games targeting 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output and ray tracing. These are conditional capabilities, not guaranteed results across the library.

Will PS5 Pro improve the games you play?

Start with the few games you expect to play most, then check whether each has a Pro enhancement and what it changes. PSSR uses AI-enhanced resolution; Sony also identifies enhanced ray tracing and optimized performance as Pro features. Different titles can apply those tools differently, so a general claim that every game will look or run better in the same way is not supported.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

An official example shows why game-specific detail matters: Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald said Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has a Performance Pro mode combining the Fidelity mode’s crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing with 60 frames per second, alongside a Fidelity Pro mode with additional ray-tracing rendering features. That describes this game’s modes, not a standard result for all PS5 Pro titles. Sony’s page also lists over 8,500 playable PS4 games on PS5 Pro; that library figure does not mean those games all receive Pro-specific enhancements.

For a CFI-21XX slim disc-versus-digital decision, the manual lists the same core CPU/GPU and 16GB GDDR6 memory for both. The main differences shown there are built-in storage and the disc drive, rather than a different listed core processor or graphics specification.

How much storage do you need?

The listed capacities are 1TB for the CFI-21XX disc PS5, 825GB for its Digital Edition, and 2TB for PS5 Pro on Sony’s US buying page. Sony’s manual notes that some SSD capacity is reserved for system administration and other options, so usable free space varies. If you keep many large PS5 games installed at once, the Pro’s larger listed capacity or an expansion drive may be useful; if you routinely uninstall games you have finished, built-in capacity may be less decisive.

Internal M.2 SSD expansion

Sony supports compatible M.2 SSD expansion. PS5 and PS4 games and media apps can run directly from a qualifying expansion SSD. Check Sony’s current minimum size and performance requirements, and update system software before installing. Requirements and instructions are on Sony’s M.2 SSD installation support page.

External USB storage

External USB storage can store compatible PS5 and PS4 games. PS5 games stored on a USB drive must be transferred back to console storage before you can play them; PS4 games can be played directly from the USB drive. Sony explains the supported storage options on its PS5 USB extended storage page. Thus, an external drive can help archive games, while an internal compatible M.2 SSD is the relevant option if you want to play PS5 titles from expanded storage.

Do you need a disc drive?

The disc PS5 suits players who use physical game discs. The Digital Edition has no drive, and PS5 Pro is sold as all-digital. A compatible removable drive is available separately for PS5 Pro and specified CFI-2000/2100 slim Digital Edition model groups. Sony says it plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, and requires an internet connection to pair during setup. Check the console’s exact model group before buying the drive; compatibility is not universal across every PS5. Details are on Sony’s buying page.

Sony Playstation 5 Disc Version PS5 Console - 4K-TV Gaming, 120Hz 8K Output, 16GB GDDR6, 825GB SSD, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 (Renewed) White
  • Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
  • PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
  • Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

Consider how you obtain and use games: whether you already own discs, want to buy or borrow physical copies, or use disc playback. If your library and purchases are digital, paying for a built-in drive may not matter to you. If you choose a digital model and later want discs, confirm model compatibility and account for the separately purchased drive and its setup requirements.

Will your TV, monitor, and network support the features?

  • Resolution and refresh rate: Sony describes PS5 Pro support for 60Hz and 120Hz displays with compatible games. A 120Hz display only matters for games and output modes that support it; it does not make every game run at 120fps.
  • VRR: Variable Refresh Rate requires an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible display.
  • ALLM: Auto Low Latency Mode also depends on a compatible TV.
  • 1440p: PS5 supports 1440p output on compatible monitors and TVs.
  • Wi-Fi 7: Sony lists Wi-Fi 7 support for PS5 Pro. A compatible router and local network conditions affect wireless performance, so the feature alone does not guarantee faster or more stable downloads.

Check your display’s actual HDMI capabilities and the games’ supported modes before treating a console feature as a benefit you will see. Sony’s current feature details are on its PS5 Pro page and its 1440p output support page.

A practical way to choose

  1. Check your priority games. Look up their PS5 Pro enhancement details. If the specific image-quality, ray-tracing, or frame-rate improvements matter to you, Pro is the model aimed at those gains.
  2. Decide whether you use discs. Choose the built-in-drive PS5 if physical discs are part of your use. For a digital console, verify exact model-group compatibility before relying on the optional removable drive.
  3. Estimate your installed library. Compare your habits with the listed 825GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, remembering that system-reserved space reduces what is available. Consider M.2 expansion for playable PS5 games or USB storage for archiving.
  4. Check your setup. Confirm display support for the resolution, refresh rate, VRR, or ALLM modes you care about; check router support if Wi-Fi 7 is a deciding factor.
  5. Confirm the exact listing. This comparison reflects Sony’s US lineup and the CFI-21XX manual. Model group, included drive, availability, and specifications can vary by region or revision. Prices and stock are not established here, so compare current local listings before purchase.
