A PC crashing during a demanding game is a symptom, not proof that one particular part has failed. Hardware, drivers, Windows, game software, overheating, unstable tuning, or BIOS configuration can all contribute. First identify whether the game alone closed, the display failed, Windows showed a stop code, the PC froze, or the whole system restarted; that pattern points to the most useful next check.
What does “crash” mean on your PC?
Write down what happened before changing settings or buying parts. Note the game, approximate time, whether the problem repeats, and any recent driver, Windows, hardware, or tuning changes. Microsoft explains that a hardware device, its driver, or software may cause an unexpected restart, and that a stop code or named module can provide clues; neither identifies a faulty component by itself. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance describes these clues.

- Only the game closes: Windows may remain usable, which makes the game, its settings, or software and driver compatibility reasonable avenues to check. This alone does not rule out hardware instability.
- The display flickers or becomes scrambled: Treat this as a display-specific symptom. A driver or an incompatible app may be involved, but flicker guidance is not a general diagnosis for every gaming crash.
- Windows shows a blue screen: Record the stop code and any named module before restarting or changing settings.
- The PC freezes: Note whether audio, keyboard response, or the display also stops; a hang can be part of a broader stability problem.
- The whole PC powers off or restarts: Record whether it shuts down abruptly or Windows displays a stop code first. The distinction helps guide investigation but does not establish a cause.
Why gaming load can expose instability
A demanding game can reveal a stability issue because the PC is working under a different load than it may encounter during light use. Plausible contributors include overheating, unstable overclocking or custom tuning, BIOS configuration, unsupported or faulty hardware, and driver or operating-system problems. AMD’s stability guidance describes these possibilities and recommends systematic troubleshooting, including returning settings to stock when tuning may be involved. AMD’s stability troubleshooting guidance does not diagnose any particular PC.

That range of possible causes is why a crash during gaming does not, on its own, justify replacing a graphics card, power supply, memory kit, or cooler. Look for evidence that connects the failure pattern to a particular avenue first.

What to check first
For a blue screen or recurring restart
- Record the stop code and any named module shown on screen.
- Open Event Viewer and review system-log entries around the time of the failure. Microsoft recommends checking nearby events when investigating blue screens or repeated restarts; an event is a clue to interpret, not automatic proof of a failed part.
- Open Device Manager and look for devices reporting problems. Microsoft includes device status among the checks for unexpected restarts.
- If memory is relevant to the symptoms, consider Windows Memory Diagnostic and then review its result in the system log. A diagnostic result is one investigative step; it does not by itself establish that a memory module is defective. See Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guidance.
For display flickering after a driver change
Microsoft’s display-flicker guidance suggests comparing Task Manager with the rest of the display: if Task Manager flickers along with everything else, a display driver is more likely; if it does not, an incompatible app is more likely. Depending on the timing of updates and what this check shows, the guidance includes updating, rolling back, or uninstalling the display driver. Use this method for flickering, not as a universal test for a game that simply closes or a PC that powers off. Microsoft’s screen-flicker steps cover that display symptom.
For a PC with overclocking or custom tuning
If you have changed CPU, GPU, or memory settings, return the system to its stock configuration and isolate changes systematically, as AMD recommends. Avoid making several tuning changes at once: if the symptom changes, you need to know which adjustment mattered.

When cooling or hardware condition is a concern
Investigate cooling and hardware condition when observations support those avenues—for example, if the problem appears during sustained demanding use or coincides with signs of heat or a device issue. The available guidance identifies overheating and faulty or unsupported hardware as possible factors, but it does not establish a universal temperature threshold or a model-specific test procedure. Do not treat a stress test, BIOS update, or component swap as automatically safe or necessary; follow guidance for your exact hardware before attempting changes.
Choose the next step from the evidence
| Observed pattern | Useful next step | What it can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Game closes, Windows stays usable | Record the game and recent software or driver changes; check whether the failure repeats. | Helps focus on game or software compatibility, but does not rule out system instability. |
| Flicker or scrambled display, especially after a driver update | Use Microsoft’s Task Manager comparison and display-driver options for flicker. | Can help distinguish a likely driver issue from an incompatible app; it is not a general game-crash test. |
| Blue screen or recurring restart | Capture the stop code, inspect nearby Event Viewer entries, and check Device Manager; consider Memory Diagnostic when relevant. | Provides evidence to investigate. A log entry or diagnostic result alone may not identify the failed part. |
| Freeze or abrupt power-off | Record exactly what stops responding and whether Windows showed a stop code; investigate tuning, cooling, or hardware only where observations point. | The failure pattern narrows the questions to ask but cannot name a component by itself. |
| Custom overclock or tuning is enabled | Return to stock settings and isolate changes systematically. | Tests whether custom configuration is associated with the instability without assuming it is the only possible cause. |
Start with observations and built-in Windows checks where they fit the failure. Replace a part only when the symptoms and further diagnosis support that decision; the official guidance cited here does not provide a universal component-replacement order, a PSU-sizing comparison, or model-specific temperature limits.
