Before you tune up or discard the box, check for shipping damage, confirm the guitar and included items match your order, and let the instrument adjust if it arrived from a very different climate. Then inspect its condition and test basic playability and electronics. Photograph concerns and follow the seller’s current process for reporting them.
1. Check the box and confirm what arrived
Look for signs of shipping damage
Before throwing away the carton or packing, check for crushing, punctures, or other signs of impact. Photograph any damage to the outer box and inner packing, and keep them while you contact the seller. Reporting procedures and deadlines vary by seller, carrier, and order, so follow the instructions attached to your purchase rather than relying on a universal deadline.

Match the guitar and contents to your order
Compare the model and visible specifications with your order or the listing. Check that the case or gig bag and any included accessories are present. Inspect the case inside and out as well; Sweetwater’s own 55-point inspection checklist includes checking the contents and case. Its checklist is an example of that retailer’s process, not an industry-wide standard.

If the instrument has come from a substantially different temperature or humidity, give it time to adjust before judging its setup or changing anything. Wood responds to moisture and temperature, which can affect the instrument as it settles into a new environment. Fender’s care guidance discusses these environmental effects and the settling-in period a new instrument may need.

There is no universal waiting period established here. Sweetwater describes allowing 24 hours before handling a guitar at its climate-controlled facility as part of its own receiving process; that is a retailer-specific practice, not a mandatory rule for every guitar or delivery. 3. Inspect the guitar’s condition
In good light, look over the guitar systematically and compare its condition with the listing. Sweetwater’s inspection checklist covers many of these areas:

- Body and finish: Look for cracks, dents, scratches, or impact marks.
- Neck, neck joint, and headstock: Check for visible damage or anything that appears loose or out of place.
- Fingerboard, frets, and nut: Look for obvious damage or irregularities.
- Bridge, tuners, strap buttons, and other hardware: Check that parts appear secure and intact.
- Case or gig bag: Check its exterior and interior for damage, and make sure it is the item you ordered.
A cosmetic detail is not necessarily a defect, but damage or a condition that conflicts with the listing is worth documenting and asking the seller about before making changes.
4. Test basic playability
Tune the guitar to pitch, then check whether the tuners work smoothly and hold tuning. Play notes at different points along the fretboard and try bends. Listen for abnormal buzzing or dead notes, and take a basic look at string and saddle position, neck relief, action, and intonation. Sweetwater includes these kinds of checks in its retailer inspection checklist.

This is an initial function check, not a full diagnosis. Sweetwater distinguishes inspection against manufacturer tolerances from a setup, which adjusts factors such as string choice and action to a player’s preferences. A guitar can pass an inspection and still need a personal setup.
5. Check electronics, if the guitar has them
For an electric guitar or an acoustic with electronics, connect it to a suitable amplifier and test the output jack, controls, switches, and pickup selections. If it has an onboard tuner or preamp, check those functions too. Sweetwater’s checklist includes these electronic features where applicable. If a control or connection does not work as expected, note what you tested and what happened.

6. Record concerns and decide what to do next
Photograph visible damage or missing items, and make a brief note of what you observed, including any playability or electronics issue. Contact the seller promptly through the damage, return, or support process for your order. Avoid adjustments that could complicate an evaluation before you have spoken with the seller.

If the guitar remains difficult to play or you are unsure how to assess a problem, ask the seller or a qualified technician. Do not treat a truss-rod adjustment as a routine first check: the correct procedure depends on the instrument. Fender advises consulting the owner’s manual for the specific truss rod and adjustment procedure.
