Where each update is managed
| What you’re updating | Where to check | What the update affects |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Google Play Store | The Maps app on your phone |
| Pixel Android software | Settings → System → Software update | The phone’s operating system and related system update status |
| Android Auto | Integrated into the Android phone; an update prompt may appear during setup | The phone technology used with a compatible car display |
Google Play app updates, Android system updates, Google Play system updates, and Google Play services are related but distinct. Google describes system services as a broader set of updates that can include Android components, the Play Store, and Google Play services. They do not all use the same update screen.

How to update Google Maps
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, tap See details.
- Find Google Maps and tap Update. To update all eligible apps, tap Update all.
Google’s Google Play app update instructions describe this update route. If you want to confirm which Maps version is installed, open Maps and tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings → About & terms. The version appears next to “Version.”
How to update Android Auto
Android Auto is integrated into Android phones, so you do not need to install a separate Android Auto app from Play Store just to use it with a car display. During setup, your phone may ask you to update Android Auto before continuing. Follow that prompt and the on-screen setup steps. Google’s Android Auto overview and setup instructions explain the process.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
If you are setting up a wired connection, connect the phone to the car’s USB port using a cable, and check that the cable and ports suit both devices. A cable is not required to update Android Auto or other software. For wireless setup, the first connection uses Bluetooth pairing rather than the wired cable step. If the phone will not connect, check compatibility and follow the vehicle maker’s instructions.
How to check for a Pixel system update
- Open Settings.
- Tap System → Software update.
- Check the update status and follow any instructions shown on screen.
Google recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and charging the phone to at least 75% before a large Android update. You can use an update notification when one arrives, or open the Software update screen if you missed it. Pixel updates roll out gradually, so availability can vary by device and carrier and may take a few weeks. Downloads install in the background and become active after a restart. See Google’s Android version and update instructions and Pixel update information.

If an update is missing or will not install
- Check the right screen. Look for Maps app updates in Google Play. Look for Android version, security update status, Google Play system update, and build number in Android Settings.
- Check storage and compatibility. A device may lack enough storage to install an update, and older hardware may not support a newer Android version.
- Retry an incomplete Android download. Google says the phone will automatically try again over the next few days if an Android update download does not finish.
- Check account sign-in for app auto-updates. Google notes that a sign-in error on an account on the device can prevent apps from updating automatically.
- Allow for rollout timing. A Pixel update may not be available to every device or carrier at the same time.
What to do if your phone cannot update Google Maps
Google says that after August 2025, Google Maps for Android version 11.39 and below no longer works, and Android 8.1 and below no longer receives new Maps releases. This is a compatibility cutoff, not a guarantee that every older phone can be upgraded. Google suggests using Maps in a mobile browser if the app cannot be updated; updating Android may be necessary to get the latest Maps app. See Google’s Maps version and support information.
How long Pixel phones receive updates
Google’s Pixel support policy, reviewed in 2026, states that Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates. Pixel 6 through Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold receive five years. Google counts each period from when that model first became available on the Google Store in the US. The policy lists Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. Check Google’s current Pixel update and support list for the exact model, since the list may change.

Google Play services, Google Play system updates, Play Store app updates, Google Maps updates, and Android OS updates may all affect an Android phone, but they are not interchangeable. Use Play Store for Maps, Android Settings for Pixel system updates, and the Android Auto setup prompt when it appears. Google also publishes dated Google System Services release notes; an entry in those notes is not the same thing as a new Maps app version or a Pixel Android version update.
