Before paying for a PS5, verify the seller, see the console work, compare its on-screen and physical serial numbers, and ask for the original dated receipt. A serial number by itself does not prove ownership, authenticity, or remaining warranty. The warranty details below are Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s terms for the United States and Canada; rules may differ elsewhere.
Start with the seller and the deal
Sony recommends buying new PlayStation products from authorized retailers for functionality, authenticity, return policy, and warranty coverage. That advice does not confirm that a particular marketplace listing or individual seller is authorized, so check the named seller and the offer’s return terms rather than relying on the marketplace name alone. Sony also warns that unauthorized retailers or websites may supply products through theft or fraud. Sony’s US buying guide explains its recommendation.

For a used PS5, seller feedback is one useful signal, not a guarantee. Sony advises reviewing ratings and feedback, requesting a demonstration video, and inspecting the console yourself where possible. These steps screen for problems; they do not independently establish the seller’s legal title to the console or its warranty eligibility.

Ask for a demonstration and inspect the console
- Request a video showing the console powering on, buttons and ports working, and the disc drive operating if the model has one.
- Ask the seller to show it connecting to the internet and PlayStation services.
- When inspecting in person, check image quality, signs of overheating, physical damage, broken seals, and whether the serial-number label is missing or altered.
- Confirm the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it.
Sony recommends checking whether a used console can connect to PlayStation services as a way to help identify a device reported lost or stolen. A successful connection is a screening check, not proof of ownership or a guarantee against every issue.

Find and compare the serial and model numbers
Sony’s PS5 support instructions show the serial number in the console interface at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The serial number is also printed on the underside of the console when it is positioned vertically; remove the base if needed to see it. The model number is on the underside as well and begins with “CFI.” See Sony’s instructions for finding PS5 serial and model numbers.
- Ask the seller to show the Console Information screen and the physical underside label before payment.
- Compare the on-screen serial number with the label. If they do not match, are unreadable, or the label appears altered, pause the purchase and ask Sony support about the specific device.
- Note the model number, which begins with CFI, so you can confirm which PS5 model is being offered.
Sony’s published guidance explains where to locate these numbers; it does not establish a public serial-number lookup that verifies ownership, authenticity, or remaining warranty. In the US warranty terms, coverage does not apply if the serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed. Sony’s US/Canada PS5 warranty sets out that exclusion.

Check what Sony’s warranty does—and does not—cover
Under Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s US/Canada PS5 warranty terms, the hardware warranty lasts one year from the original purchase date and applies to the original purchaser. To request warranty service, Sony requires valid proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale or retailer receipt showing the original purchase date. Sony also says the warranty is the same whether or not the product is registered. These are regional terms, not a universal rule; check the warranty applicable to the buyer’s country.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAsk the seller for the original dated retailer receipt and keep it with the console’s purchase records. A verbal assurance that the PS5 is “under warranty,” or a claim that it was registered, does not replace Sony’s stated proof-of-purchase requirement. Because the stated coverage is for the original purchaser, do not assume that a used buyer can claim the seller’s remaining coverage; confirm eligibility for the exact console with Sony before relying on it.

Distinguish third-party used from Sony Certified Refurbished
Sony’s US buying guide cautions that third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty. Sony’s separate US Certified Refurbished page says its certified refurbished products include a standard one-year limited warranty and are tested to the same functional standards as new products. A used listing is not the same thing as a PlayStation Certified Refurbished product: verify that the offer is genuinely part of Sony’s certified program and check the specific terms and applicable region. | What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Seller | Named seller, reputation and feedback, authorization where claimed, and the return terms. |
| Working condition | Video or in-person demonstration of power-on, controls, ports, disc drive if applicable, image, and online access. |
| Serial and model | Physical label and Console Information screen; compare serials and record the CFI model number. |
| Warranty evidence | Original dated retailer receipt, original purchase date, who the warranty covers, and terms for the buyer’s region. |
| Product category | Third-party used versus an identifiable PlayStation Certified Refurbished unit; do not assume they share warranty treatment. |
| Inspection and returns | Whether you can inspect before payment and what remedies the seller offers if the console is faulty or misrepresented. |
Walk away or seek clarification if the seller refuses reasonable proof of operation, will not show the serial label or settings screen, cannot explain a mismatch, or asks you to rely on an unsupported warranty promise. Sony’s checks reduce risk, but no single check makes an uncertain seller or console safe.
