To connect a standard Echo speaker, plug it in, open the Alexa app, then go to Devices > + > Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more. Follow the prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi and register it to your Amazon account. If setup fails, check the app, Wi-Fi and power before resetting the speaker.
What you need before setup
- An Echo speaker and its power adapter.
- A mobile device with the Alexa app installed and updated.
- An Amazon account you can sign in to.
- Your home Wi-Fi network name and password.
Amazon’s Echo setup instructions use the Alexa app for the standard speaker setup. Menus can vary by model and app version; Amazon’s device setup index links to instructions for different Echo types.

Set up a standard Echo speaker in the Alexa app
- Plug the Echo into a power outlet using its adapter and wait for it to start.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet and install any available update.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap the + control, then Add Device.
- Choose Amazon Echo, then Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the Echo to Wi-Fi and complete registration.
If the app’s wording differs, use the setup instructions for your exact Echo model rather than assuming every device follows the same screens. Some Echo screen devices offer QR-guided or on-device setup. For example, the 2024 Echo Spot can begin setup by scanning the code displayed on its screen; it can also be added manually in the Alexa app. See Amazon’s Echo Spot setup instructions.

If the Alexa app does not find the Echo or setup will not start
- Check that you are signed in to the correct Amazon account and that the Alexa app is up to date.
- Make sure the Echo is powered with its supplied adapter and has access to the internet.
- Unplug the Echo, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in and try again.
- For an Echo with a screen, follow its model-specific on-screen setup flow.
- If setup or registration still fails, use Amazon’s instructions to reset that specific model, then repeat setup.
Amazon Support says, “Most problems with device setup arise from a few common issues.” Its setup troubleshooting page and model-specific guidance are the safest references for reset steps, which differ across Echo devices.

If the Echo cannot connect to Wi-Fi
- Update the Alexa app and confirm the Wi-Fi password carefully.
- Check whether the router has internet access. If other devices also cannot get online, restart the router; if the problem continues, contact your internet service provider.
- Move the Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router and away from potential interference, including microwaves, baby monitors and other electronics. This is Amazon’s recommended troubleshooting distance, not a guarantee of coverage.
- If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try the other band.
- Temporarily disconnect some other devices from Wi-Fi to check whether network load is contributing to the problem.
- Unplug the Echo for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and retry setup.
- If it still will not connect, reset the Echo using the instructions for its model. Amazon also suggests trying a phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot as a diagnostic step.
When multiple devices have connectivity trouble, investigate the home network or ISP first; the Echo may not be the source of the outage. Amazon’s guidance is available in Wi-Fi troubleshooting and Echo Wi-Fi setup help.
Change the Wi-Fi network saved on an Echo
For a speaker without a screen, change the saved network in the Alexa app:

- Open Devices and select the Echo.
- Tap Device Settings.
- Choose Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
- Select a previously used network or tap Join another Wi-Fi Network, then follow the prompts.
Amazon directs owners of Echo screen devices to a separate on-device process. Its Wi-Fi settings guidance covers supported home network types, including common 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks; ad-hoc and peer-to-peer networks are not supported.

- Check that the Echo is online and that your home internet connection works.
- Confirm the microphone is not muted.
- Restart the Echo by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then check its Wi-Fi connection.
- Place it where it can hear you: away from walls, other speakers and persistent background noise.
If the problem continues, use Amazon’s instructions for the exact model before resetting it. A screen-equipped Echo may have a different recovery flow from a speaker without a screen.
