A spare phone can serve as an indoor security camera if its hardware is in good condition, the app supports its model and operating system, and the setup can stay powered, ventilated, and connected. Before relying on it, check where video goes and test both live viewing and a motion recording in the conditions where you plan to use it.
Check that the phone and app are compatible
Compatibility depends on the particular app, phone model, and operating-system version. Confirm that the app is currently available for both the camera phone and the device you will use to view it; one vendor’s requirements do not establish support for every older phone.

- Check storage. If you plan to record on the phone, look at the app’s storage requirements. AlfredCamera recommends at least 400 MB of available internal storage for its Activity Detection and Continuous Recording features. That is a product-specific recommendation, not a universal minimum.
- Review permissions. Grant the camera, microphone, and other permissions needed for the features you intend to use. The UniCam guide, for example, says its spare phone needs camera and microphone access for video and audio streaming. Check the app’s current privacy information as well.
- Find out what happens when the screen is locked. Background behavior varies by app and operating system. UniCam says its iOS app must remain in the foreground, while its Android app continues in the background; Intrude describes its Android app as operating in the background with a persistent notification. Treat these as descriptions of those apps, not a rule for other apps.
Plan for power, battery condition, and airflow
Continuous camera use can drain a phone’s battery quickly. Arrange dependable power with a compatible charger and cable, and follow the selected app’s instructions. UniCam advises keeping the phone plugged in; SpareCam advises using a charger and cable that do not run hot.

SpareCam advises replacing a damaged battery first and cautions against leaving very old or damaged batteries charging unattended.
- Keep the phone ventilated, away from direct sun and fabric, and on a stable stand that does not block the camera or airflow.
- Frame the area you need to see, then check visibility and lighting from the viewer device. Reposition the phone if the view is obstructed or too dark.
There is no universal safe runtime, temperature threshold, or continuous-use duration established for all phone models. Operating limits depend on the device, battery, environment, and app.

Understand network access and recording storage
“Can I view it remotely?” and “Where does the footage go?” are separate questions. Check the app’s current documentation for both before choosing it.
- Network and access: Find out whether the camera needs internet access, whether the viewer must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and whether off-site viewing requires an account or service. Ask what happens if a direct connection is unavailable. SpareCam describes a LAN-only mode with no cross-network remote viewing, and a cloud-assisted mode that uses an account for discovery, signaling, and motion notifications, with an encrypted relay fallback. Those details apply to SpareCam’s described modes, not every camera app.
- Recordings and retention: Determine whether clips are saved on the camera phone or uploaded, how long they remain, and whether you can export them if the phone is lost or damaged. SpareCam says its event recordings stay in app storage on the camera phone.
- Data and privacy: Check what footage or metadata leaves the phone or home network, including account information, notifications, and diagnostics. A statement that clips stay local does not, by itself, explain how live-stream transport or app data works. Treat vendor privacy and encryption statements as product claims, not independent security audits.
- Feature limits: Check whether motion detection, notifications, cloud storage, or longer retention need a paid plan or internet connection. App features, availability, and pricing can change.
Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video documentation describes a separate service for compatible home security cameras; it does not mean every old iPhone can automatically act as a HomeKit camera. Apple says activity can be viewed in the Home app for 10 days. Its documented limits are one camera on the 50 GB plan, up to five on the 200 GB plan, and unlimited cameras on the 2 TB plan and above. These are HomeKit Secure Video plan limits, not general capabilities of phone-camera apps.

Test the setup before you depend on it
- Install and pair the app using its current instructions for the camera and viewer devices.
- Place the camera phone on dependable power, with airflow and an unobstructed, stable view.
- Open the viewer and confirm that live video works in the conditions where you expect to use it. If off-site access matters, test from a different network.
- Trigger a motion event. Confirm that the alert arrives, then play or export the resulting clip so you know where it is and how retrieval works. SpareCam specifically advises testing a live view and one motion event before relying on its setup.
- Repeat relevant checks after an app or operating-system update, a change to permissions or battery-optimization settings, or a router change. UniCam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking connectivity and permissions, keeping both apps current, and, on iOS, checking that the app remains in the foreground.
Know when a phone may not be enough
A repurposed phone is not necessarily a substitute for purpose-built security equipment. SpareCam identifies outdoor weather exposure, wide temperature swings, guaranteed night vision in complete darkness, long outages without battery backup, certified alarm monitoring, and multi-camera buildings as situations where dedicated equipment may be preferable. This is vendor guidance for its use case, not an independent comparison of every phone and camera.

There is no comparable independent test in the cited sources measuring repurposed phones against dedicated security cameras for detection accuracy, security effectiveness, or battery life. Choose based on the capabilities you actually need rather than assuming a phone app provides them.
