Google Flights is the better-documented choice for monitoring a route or specific itinerary; Matt’s Flights is aimed at travelers who want curated deals from selected departure regions, with an optional premium fare-research service. The choice depends on whether you already know what trip you want to watch or would rather browse deals. The available official information does not establish which service sends faster or better alerts, covers more routes, or saves travelers more money.
How the two fare-alert services work
Google Flights: monitor a route or flight
Google documents several ways to track prices: search a route for particular dates and track it, select a specific flight and track that flight, or choose “Any dates” for a more flexible route search. Price updates are sent by email when Google says a tracked price changes significantly. You can manage tracked routes in Google Travel Help or view them on the Tracked Flights page; Google says you must sign in to a Google Account to track flights and receive notifications.

For “Any dates,” Google Help says it emails when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month. If there is no sufficiently large drop, Google says it sends a regular email with the best available flight prices. It also describes notifications when a tracked route is likely to become more expensive and when a fare is about to expire and a replacement is likely to cost more. These are descriptions of possible product alerts, not promises that a particular alert will arrive or that a fare will remain available.

Google’s 2024 product blog described “Any dates” deals anytime in the next three to six months, as well as tracking specific dates or an exact itinerary. That time window is not phrased identically to the current Help page’s description, so treat it as the blog’s feature explanation rather than a guarantee of alerts throughout that period.

Matt’s Flights: receive deals for selected departure regions
Matt’s Flights describes a service in which members choose the departure region or regions they want covered and receive flight-deal alerts by email; it says travelers can book directly with the airline. The homepage also presents a premium option that includes access to Matt and the team for fare research.
The official page reviewed does not specify route-by-route tracking controls, alert frequency, fare filters, or a like-for-like comparison with Google’s tracker. Its savings and member-count language is promotional; the page does not provide a dated, independently verifiable method for comparing savings or alert performance against Google Flights.

Which service fits your travel plans?
| If you want to… | Better-documented fit | Why |

| Track one known route on fixed dates | Google Flights | Google Help documents tracking a route for searched dates. |
| Watch a particular itinerary | Google Flights | Google Help documents selecting a specific flight and turning on tracking. |
| Stay flexible about dates | Google Flights | Help describes “Any dates” tracking; Google’s 2024 blog gives additional context about deals in the next three to six months. |
| Get curated deals departing from chosen regions | Matt’s Flights | The service describes region selection and email deal alerts. |
| Get help researching fares | Matt’s Flights premium | The service describes premium access to Matt and the team. Check the current offer and terms on its site. |
| Compare alert speed, route coverage, alert quality, or savings | Not established | The official sources do not provide independent head-to-head data. |
If you have a destination and dates in mind, start with Google’s route- or flight-specific tracker. If you are open to deals from selected departure regions or value the human assistance Matt’s Flights describes, consider that service instead. You can also use both approaches: one for broad deal discovery and the other to monitor a known trip. The available information does not show that either service replaces the other.
What a fare alert can—and cannot—tell you
An alert is a prompt to check a fare, not a reservation or price guarantee. Google describes notifications about significant price changes and possible increases or expiring fares, but the cited documentation does not promise that every fare movement will trigger an email or that an alerted fare will still be available when you open it. For Matt’s Flights, the reviewed homepage describes regional deal emails but does not publish enough detail to compare alert timing or coverage with Google.

No independently sourced, dated comparison establishes which sends faster alerts, monitors more routes, delivers more useful notifications, or produces greater realized savings. Matt’s Flights’ own savings statements should be understood as vendor claims, not independent comparative results.
