Keep the intake, exhaust, and adapter uncovered; make sure hot air can escape without returning to the intake; and leave enough access to inspect, clean, and remove the PC.
Start with the exact model’s airflow requirements
Mini PCs do not all draw in or expel air from the same places. Find the intake and exhaust vents in the manual for your exact model, then check how the proposed location affects both. Do not rely on photos of a similar-looking model: vent layouts can differ.

Leave the vents unobstructed, including by nearby walls, shelves, or other objects. A vent can appear clear while a close surface still restricts its airflow. Also consider where exhaust goes: avoid a position that traps hot air or sends it straight back toward an intake. Intel’s Thin Mini-ITX system design guide explains why vent position and orientation affect cooling; the design details for a particular system depend on its manufacturer.
Check clearance and mounting orientation
Use the clearance specified for your model rather than applying a universal rule. Lenovo says that 51 mm (2 inches) of air space around vents is usually sufficient for the ThinkStation P330 Tiny. That is guidance for that specific computer, not a standard for mini PCs generally. See Lenovo’s P330 Tiny air-circulation instructions.

Confirm that the manufacturer permits the position you plan to use, such as horizontal, vertical, or attached to a mount. Check any accessory’s instructions too. A compact shelf, cabinet, or desk cavity is a poor choice if it blocks the airflow path or requires an unsupported orientation.
Assess heat in the intended location
Check the operating-temperature limit in the manual or product documentation for your particular PC. Room temperature alone may not tell the whole story: a poorly ventilated cavity can hold heat around the computer and its intake.

Temperature figures in other manufacturers’ guidance are not interchangeable. Intel’s Thin Mini-ITX design guide gives 35°C as a recommended maximum operating room temperature outside the system for that design guidance. Lenovo’s desktop ventilation guidance says airflow into the referenced computer should not exceed 35°C. Neither figure establishes a limit for every mini PC. Consult the device’s own specifications before installing it in a warm cabinet or enclosed space.
Plan for dust and cleaning access
Dust can block fan inlets and reduce heat-sink performance. If the location is dusty or busy, allow room to inspect and clean the PC rather than burying it behind equipment or in a cavity that is difficult to reach.

Lenovo advises inspecting its covered desktops for dust at least every three months, with more frequent cleaning in dusty or high-traffic areas. Treat that as Lenovo guidance, not a universal schedule; the right interval depends on the environment and device. Follow your model’s cleaning instructions, and shut down and unplug the computer before inspecting or opening it. Lenovo’s heat and product ventilation guidance provides its safety and maintenance advice.
A built-in or approved dust shield may be an option for some models, but do not assume a generic filter is safe: a filter that restricts airflow can undermine cooling. Lenovo’s ThinkCentre M600 Tiny documentation claims its optional dust shield reduces dust intake by almost 40 percent; that is a product-specific claim for that model, originally published in 2017, not evidence that other filters or devices will perform similarly. Check the M600 Tiny specifications and current compatibility if you own that computer.

Keep the power adapter ventilated
Check the required adapter and its rating in your PC’s documentation. The ASUS PN50/PN51 manual specifies using the supplied adapter to prevent damage and notes that it may become warm to hot during use. Keep the adapter uncovered and place it where it can dissipate heat; do not tuck it into a sealed space or cover it with other items. Compare candidate locations before committing
When choosing between a shelf, cabinet, wall mount, or desk cavity, evaluate the whole installation rather than footprint alone:

- Can every intake and exhaust vent remain clear, with the model’s required clearance?
- Can exhaust heat escape, or will it recirculate toward the intake?
- Will the PC stay within its specified temperature range in that location?
- How much dust is likely to collect, and can you inspect and clean the unit safely?
- Does the manufacturer permit the mounting orientation and accessory?
- Can you reach the power adapter, ports, and power connection?
- Can you remove the computer for service without dismantling the surrounding setup?
Service access matters because maintenance procedures vary by model. Lenovo’s IdeaCentre Tiny Mini 5 replacement videos, for example, cover fan and heat-sink service for that model family; they are not instructions for other mini PCs.
