Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore you respond to a prize notification, check whether you entered, verify the sponsor independently, and look for demands for money or sensitive information. The clearest warning sign is a fee to release the prize: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says, “If you have to pay to get your prize, it’s a scam.”
How can you tell if a prize notification is real?
A notification by phone, text, email, or mail is not proof that you won. Start by asking whether you remember entering that specific sweepstakes. If you did not enter—or cannot confirm that you did—treat the message cautiously and verify it before responding.

A familiar company name, government-sounding language, or polished-looking message can be impersonated. Focus on what the sender asks you to do and whether the sponsor and promotion can be confirmed through contact details you find yourself.

Upfront payment
Legitimate prizes are free to collect. If someone asks you to pay taxes, shipping and handling, processing, customs, or insurance costs before the prize is delivered, stop. Do not pay by wire transfer, payment app, gift card, cash, or cryptocurrency. The FTC’s guidance on fake prize, sweepstakes, and lottery scams explains this warning sign.

Bank, card, or sensitive personal information
Do not give an unsolicited prize contact your bank or credit-card number or sensitive personal information to claim a prize. The FTC says there is no reason to provide this information in this situation.
Pressure to act immediately
A rushed deadline or insistence that you act now is a reason to pause. Urgency can be used to keep you from checking the claim. Do not let a threatening or short deadline substitute for verification.
Verify the sponsor through a separate route
- Look up the sponsor’s contact information independently, rather than relying only on a phone number, link, or email in the notification.
- Contact the sponsor using the details you found and ask whether the promotion and your win are legitimate.
- Search the company or promotion name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Treat search results as a supplementary check, not proof by themselves.
Do not use the suspicious message’s own contact details as your only verification route. A scammer can control the link or number they provide.

If you can independently confirm that the promotion is genuine, consult its official rules for the eligibility requirements, claim deadline, documents, and redemption procedure. These details depend on the specific promotion; there is no universal claim process established by the consumer guidance cited here. If a requirement is unclear, ask the sponsor using independently found contact details.

What to do if the contact seems fraudulent
- Stop engaging and do not send money or disclose information.
- Report the contact to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or to your state or local consumer-protection office.
- If the suspicious prize material arrived by mail, the FTC also identifies the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as a reporting channel.
- If your personal information was misused, use IdentityTheft.gov, the FTC’s identity-theft resource.
This guidance draws on U.S. federal consumer information and Arizona guidance. If you live elsewhere, consult the consumer-protection authority in your jurisdiction.
