Check the ports on both devices, then connect the player’s output to the matching TV input. If both have HDMI, use an HDMI cable from the player’s HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI IN, select that HDMI input on the TV, and start playback. If an older player has red, white and yellow RCA leads but the TV has no matching input, use a correctly directed composite-to-HDMI converter.
Choose a connection that both devices support
Look at the labels beside the ports on the back or side of the player and TV. Port availability varies by model and region, so do not assume a newer TV has analog inputs or that it includes an adapter. Sony recommends HDMI when it is available, and Panasonic describes the same HDMI OUT-to-HDMI IN connection. Sony’s connection guidance and Panasonic’s setup instructions show the relevant port arrangements.

|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Player HDMI OUT and TV HDMI IN | Carried over HDMI | HD-capable connection, according to Sony’s BRAVIA connectivity guide |
| Component video | Matching Y/Pb/Pr video outputs and inputs | Separate left/right audio leads in the described setup | Standard-definition video in Sony’s guidance |

Connect with HDMI
- Connect an HDMI cable from the player’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI IN port on the TV.
- Turn on the player and TV.
- On the TV, choose the HDMI input number that matches the port you used.
- Insert a disc and start playback.
A DVD or Blu-ray player normally connects to a regular HDMI input. Do not choose the TV’s HDMI ARC port because you think ARC is required: ARC is for returning audio from the TV to compatible audio equipment. Check the labels and the manuals for your exact devices.
Connect with component video
Use this option only when both devices have matching component ports. Component video typically uses three leads labeled Y/Pb/Pr, often colored green, blue and red. The video leads alone do not carry the separate left/right audio in the connection described by Sony and Panasonic.

- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
- Connect the player’s component video OUT leads to the TV’s matching component IN ports, matching the Y/Pb/Pr labels.
- Connect the player’s left and right audio outputs to the TV’s corresponding audio inputs, usually white for left and red for right.
- Select the TV’s component input, then start playback.
Confirm the TV’s manual explains which audio inputs pair with its component input; analog port layouts differ between models.
Connect with composite RCA
If both devices have composite connections, use the yellow lead for video and the red and white leads for right and left audio. Match OUT on the player to IN on the TV.

Some TVs use a 3.5 mm breakout adapter instead of full-size RCA sockets. Check the exact TV manual and wiring diagram before buying or connecting one; the adapter may be model-specific, and the socket may support composite or component wiring. Sony’s composite connection guidance illustrates why the device’s specified wiring matters.
Connect an RCA player to an HDMI-only TV
You need an active composite AV to HDMI converter whose input accepts the player’s red/white/yellow signal and whose output is HDMI. Direction matters: an HDMI-to-composite converter is the reverse device and will not perform this connection. Element Electronics’ guidance notes that third-party compatibility and performance can vary.

- Connect the player’s yellow video and red/white audio OUT leads to the converter’s AV IN sockets.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the TV.
- Connect the converter’s power supply if its instructions require one.
- Select the corresponding HDMI input on the TV, then start playback.
Conversion changes the connection format, not the detail in the original signal. Sony characterizes HDMI as carrying HD signals and component/composite as displaying standard-definition video. A converter cannot recreate picture detail that was not present in the composite source.
Fix a picture or sound problem
- No picture or signal: Check that the cable runs from the player’s OUT port to the TV’s IN port, then select the exact TV input used.
- Composite picture missing or wrong: Verify that yellow goes to video, not to an audio socket. For component, match the Y/Pb/Pr labels; its red, green and blue video leads are not interchangeable with composite yellow.
- No sound on an analog setup: Check that the red and white audio leads are connected to the matching audio inputs associated with the selected TV input.
- Mini-jack adapter does not work: Confirm the TV model’s specified adapter and whether its analog input is composite or component. Availability and included accessories can vary by model and region.
- Converter gives no picture: Confirm that it accepts composite AV as input and outputs HDMI, that it is powered if required, and that the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the converter. Compatibility and performance vary by converter.
What picture quality to expect
In Sony’s BRAVIA guidance, HDMI carries HD signals, while component and composite video are described as standard definition. That is a categorical distinction, not a promise that every disc or player will produce a particular resolution on every TV. Philips also warns that composite output on its DVD/VCR setup can give poor DVD playback quality and recommends it for older televisions without S-Video or component inputs; that advice is specific to the listed Philips connection, not a universal judgment about every player. Philips’ DVD/VCR guidance explains that qualification.
