Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) capacitors can be considered for spacecraft electronics, but being commercially available, automotive-grade, or labeled “space” does not establish that a part is suitable for a mission. Start with the mission’s Mission, Environment, Application, and Lifetime (MEAL), then match the capacitor’s documented limits and evidence to the circuit, verification plan, and project risk. Treat radiation assurance as a separate question.
How do I source COTS capacitors for a new-space application?
Build a documented selection case before ordering parts for flight hardware. NASA’s NESC recommends tailoring COTS selection and assurance to MEAL and project risk; it does not prescribe one assurance route for every spacecraft. Its Phase II recommendations give different approaches by risk class:

| NASA risk category | Phase II recommendation |
|---|---|
| Classes A and B, and human-rated missions | MIL-SPEC-based design |
| Class C | Project choice among the approaches |
| Classes D and Sub-D | System of COTS |
These are NASA recommendations, not universal rules for other agencies or projects. The NESC report also discusses verification at part, board, and system levels and allows some screening or non-radiation lot-acceptance testing to be reduced or eliminated when available evidence is sufficient for the mission and risk posture. That is a case-specific decision, not a blanket exemption. NASA NESC Phase II COTS recommendations

Define the application before choosing a part
Record the circuit role and operating stresses alongside mission lifetime, thermal and radiation environment, fault tolerance, size, weight and power (SWaP), performance needs, redundancy, and procurement constraints. Identify which failures the design can tolerate and which require mitigation. Without circuit values and environmental requirements, no particular capacitor part number can be responsibly recommended.

Choose the evidence route as well as the component
NASA describes commercial distribution, vendor testing, and manufacturing evidence as relevant to COTS assurance. Its COTS phasing presentation provides context for that approach. A commercial listing alone does not establish authorization, provenance, screening, lot history, or flight suitability.
Which capacitor technology and specification should I consider?
Choose for the actual circuit and environment, not for a broad “space-grade” or “commercial” label. NASA’s Parts Selection List (NPSL) provides a starting index of capacitor types and associated specifications; inclusion in that index does not qualify a specific part for a mission. NASA NPSL capacitor categories
Ceramic capacitors
The NPSL lists ceramic families associated with MIL-PRF-20 (CCR), MIL-PRF-123 (CKS), MIL-PRF-39014 (CKR), MIL-PRF-55681 (CDR), MIL-PRF-49467 (HV), MIL-PRF-49470 (PS), and DSCC-DWG-87106. These references are a route for investigating specifications, not a recommendation that any listed family fits an unspecified circuit.

The NPSL also categorizes tantalum, glass, and plastic-film capacitors. The appropriate technology depends on the circuit’s electrical, environmental, and reliability requirements. The available mission details do not support ranking these technologies or naming a suitable manufacturer or part.
Commercial MLCC guidance has a defined scope
NASA NEPP’s commercial MLCC guideline addresses simple parallel-plate, surface-mount chip multilayer ceramic capacitors rated at 100 V or less. It proposes possible selection, screening, and qualification practices, but its preface says it is neither an official endorsement of commercial capacitors for space nor an established testing requirement. Designs such as LICA or LGA may need additional testing and tailoring. The guideline dates to 2012, so use it as advisory guidance alongside current project standards and requirements, not as a substitute for them. NASA NEPP commercial MLCC guideline
What evidence should I check before procurement?
Review the manufacturer’s datasheet and supporting quality and reliability records for the exact candidate. Confirm that the stated limits cover the actual operating conditions and that supporting documentation applies to the part family, manufacturing site, and lot under consideration. NASA’s guidance emphasizes understanding datasheet limitations and verifying manufacturer specifications and reliability for the space-hardware application. The NASA ILPM page likewise advises requesting documentation sufficient for the project’s MEAL. NESC recommendations · NASA ILPM and Established COTS list

NASA’s ILPM “Established COTS” designation is not radiation qualification: the list’s assessment does not evaluate ionizing-radiation tolerance. How should screening, qualification, and derating be handled?
Set verification requirements from the mission and project risk, then make the rationale traceable. NASA’s NESC recommendations allow some screening and non-radiation lot-acceptance tests to be reduced or eliminated only where sufficient evidence supports that choice. They do not provide a universal test recipe for every capacitor or application. A project should define its needed part-, board-, and system-level evidence, identify residual risks, and decide whether to mitigate or accept them. NASA NESC Phase II COTS recommendations
Keep radiation assessment separate
Evaluate radiation tolerance independently of commercial reliability listings and non-radiation screening. An “Established COTS” entry does not answer whether a capacitor can tolerate the mission’s ionizing-radiation environment.

Do not transfer guidance across capacitor technologies
NASA’s dedicated 2023 polymer-tantalum guideline says parts in MIL-PRF-32700, AEC-Q200, or COTS+ categories should be screened, qualified, and derated according to that publication. This is guidance for polymer tantalum capacitors; it should not be applied wholesale to MLCCs or other capacitor technologies. NASA polymer tantalum capacitor guideline

Buy through a source that can support the project’s documentation needs, such as an authorized electronic-component distributor or manufacturer-direct channel when available. NASA materials describe commercial distributors as a common COTS route, while its ILPM guidance emphasizes obtaining documentation suited to MEAL. A marketplace product page is useful for locating a commercial item, but it does not by itself establish the item’s origin, lot evidence, screening, or flight suitability. What does the COTS tradeoff mean for a new-space project?
COTS can avoid some of the time and expense associated with bespoke components, but it shifts the burden toward selecting evidence appropriate to the application and accepting risk explicitly. In a 2020 article, ESA described bespoke fully space-qualified components as typically taking two to five years to develop; that historical estimate explains the motivation for commercial options, not a current schedule guarantee for every component or project. European Space Agency discussion of commercial spacecraft components
The practical outcome is a mission-specific decision: identify the needed capacitor behavior, establish what the exact part and lot documentation demonstrate, plan verification and separate radiation assessment, and record the remaining risks. Neither commercial availability nor a generic label can replace that chain of evidence.
