Most old stereo speakers can work with a modern TV, but passive speakers need a receiver or amplifier between them and the TV. First identify the TV’s audio output and the receiver’s matching input; then connect the receiver to the speakers using the speaker terminals and wire. Never connect bare speaker wire to a TV’s RCA, optical, or headphone output: those are not speaker-level outputs. Sony explains that direct speaker connection requires speaker-level output jacks.
Identify the speakers and the equipment you have
Conventional stereo speakers with binding posts, spring clips, or bare-wire terminals are usually passive: they require amplification. If you already have a stereo receiver or amplifier, use it to drive the speakers. Powered speakers have their own amplifier and may accept a line-level input; follow their manual rather than connecting them as passive speakers.

Check the labels and manuals for the TV, receiver or amplifier, and speakers. Look for the TV’s audio output, the receiver’s corresponding audio input, and the receiver’s speaker terminals. Match the connection by its label and format, not merely by the shape of a port.

| HDMI ARC | An HDMI port labeled ARC on the TV and an ARC-capable connection on the receiver | ARC can return TV audio to the receiver and may support TV-remote volume or power control when both devices and their settings allow it. An ordinary HDMI input is not enough. Sony’s ARC guidance explains the port requirement. |
| Optical digital audio | Optical audio output on the TV and optical input on the receiver | Use an optical cable. If the receiver has only analog RCA inputs, add an optical-to-stereo converter. The TV or receiver may need a compatible digital audio format. |
| Analog RCA | RCA audio output on the TV and an analog input on the receiver | Connect left and right audio with a stereo RCA cable, then select that input on the receiver. Check whether the TV output is fixed or variable; that affects how volume is controlled. Teufel documents RCA connections for specific systems. |
| Headphone or 3.5 mm audio | A headphone/3.5 mm output on the TV and a compatible analog input on the receiver | A suitable 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable can connect the ports. TV volume controls may affect this output, depending on the model and settings. |
| Audio from an external source | A cable box, disc player, or other source with an audio output the stereo accepts | Connect that source directly to the audio system if the TV lacks a usable output. This carries audio from that source, not necessarily from built-in TV apps or other devices connected to the TV. Panasonic suggests this route where appropriate. |
HDMI ARC: the simplest route when both devices support it
Connect the TV’s ARC-labeled HDMI port to the receiver’s ARC connection. Confirm both manuals specify ARC; a standard HDMI port on either device will not provide the audio-return connection. Enable ARC in the relevant device settings if needed. ARC may also allow volume or power control from the TV remote, but that depends on both devices and their configuration.

Optical: digital output to an optical input
Connect the TV’s optical audio output to the receiver’s optical input. When the receiver cannot accept optical audio but has RCA inputs, place an optical-to-stereo converter between the TV and receiver: TV optical output → converter optical input → converter RCA outputs → receiver analog input. A converter changes digital audio to analog line-level audio; it does not amplify passive speakers.
If optical audio is silent or the receiver/converter cannot decode the selected format, set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM or stereo if that option is available. Klipsch notes that PCM may be needed for its TV-connected powered speakers; menu names and available formats vary by product.

Analog RCA or headphone output
Use RCA-to-RCA when the TV has stereo RCA audio out and the receiver has an analog input. Use a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable when the TV has a headphone output and the receiver has RCA input. Select the matching receiver input and configure the TV’s audio output if required. Consult the TV manual to determine whether its output is fixed-level or follows the TV volume control.

- Turn off the TV and receiver before connecting cables.
- Connect the TV’s chosen audio output to the matching receiver input, or through the required converter.
- Connect each speaker to the receiver’s speaker terminals, observing the receiver and speaker labels for left/right and polarity.
- Check the receiver and speaker manuals for supported impedance and power guidance before powering up. There is no universal safe matching number for an unidentified vintage speaker and receiver combination.
- Turn the equipment on, select the receiver input used for the TV, and set the TV’s audio output to the external connection as required by its menus.
If the TV has no audio output that matches the stereo
Check all TV ports and the manual before buying a cable or converter. A cable cannot turn a digital output into an analog input or provide speaker amplification. If the TV has no suitable audio output, one option is connecting an external source—such as a cable box or DVD player—directly to the receiver, provided their ports match. That route is limited to audio from that source; it may not deliver sound from built-in TV apps or other TV inputs.

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
- Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
- Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.

Troubleshoot missing or distorted audio
- No sound: Confirm the receiver is powered on, the selected input matches the connected cable, and the TV is set to output audio externally. Some models also require changing TV-speaker or external-output settings. Teufel’s model-specific guidance notes that settings may need adjustment.
- ARC is silent: Verify that the cable is in the ARC-labeled ports at both ends, ARC is enabled where required, and both devices support ARC.
- Optical is silent: Check that the TV and receiver/converter support the selected format. Try PCM or stereo in the TV’s digital audio settings if available.
- A converter produces no speaker sound: Confirm its RCA outputs go to an amplifier or receiver input. The converter does not drive passive speakers directly.
- Volume behaves unexpectedly: Check whether the TV’s analog output is fixed or variable and whether the receiver is set to the intended input. Optical volume-control behavior is equipment-dependent; check the manuals rather than assuming the TV remote will control it.
