Persistent’s official Q2 FY27 results report revenue of $487.6 million, up 7.8% quarter over quarter and 20.0% year over year, an EBIT margin of 15.0%, and PAT of ₹3,515.1 million, down 25.4% year over year. The company page does not state the external consensus estimate, so the size and cause of the alleged miss cannot be established from that release alone.
Only after reconciling the miss should you test normalized margins, at least four quarters of operating trends, cash conversion, forward bookings and valuation. A falling PAT number can coexist with growing revenue, while a strong order metric does not by itself prove that profits or cash flow will follow.

What an “earnings miss” actually means
An earnings miss is a result that falls below a previously published external expectation, not merely a year-over-year decline. The comparison must use the same quarter, currency and accounting basis. A company can report lower PAT but still beat consensus on revenue and EBIT; calling that outcome a broad earnings miss would hide the information an investor needs.
For Persistent Systems, write down the following before interpreting any market reaction:

- the fiscal quarter and announcement date;
- reported revenue and the analyst-consensus revenue;
- reported EBIT and EBIT margin versus consensus;
- reported PAT and consensus PAT;
- operating cash flow, if disclosed, versus the comparable expectation;
- management’s prior guidance and the new guidance, if any; and
- the share-price move measured over a defined period, rather than an intraday impression.
Calculate each surprise as (reported figure − consensus figure) ÷ consensus figure × 100. Use a dated market-data or broker source for consensus. Persistent’s official materials establish the reported figures, but they do not publish the external estimate needed to calculate the miss.
Start with the exact quarter and the primary numbers
Fiscal labels can be easy to mix up. “Q2 FY27” is not the same period as “Q2 FY26,” and a percentage quoted in a news alert may refer to quarter-over-quarter growth while another refers to year-over-year growth. Keep the comparison period beside every number in your worksheet.
The latest figures identified in the company’s Q2 FY27 results page are:

| Metric | Reported result | Change or margin | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $487.6 million | Up 7.8% quarter over quarter; up 20.0% year over year | Check whether the result beat the dated revenue consensus and whether growth was organic. |
| EBIT margin | 15.0% | Period margin reported by the company | Compare with the prior quarter, prior year and analyst margin expectation. |
| PAT | ₹3,515.1 million | Down 25.4% year over year | Reconcile tax, exceptional items, finance income and share count before calling the decline operational. |
| Total contract value (TCV) | $633.5 million | Period disclosure | Use as a forward-demand indicator alongside conversion timing and margins. |
| Annual contract value (ACV) | $481.0 million | Period disclosure | Assess the recurring or annualized portion of demand and its vertical mix. |
The revenue and PAT figures use different currencies in the company disclosure. Do not convert one into the other without recording the exchange rate and the date used. More importantly, do not infer the size of a “miss” from the 25.4% PAT decline until the consensus PAT and the causes of the change are known.
Put the latest quarter in a multi-quarter trend
A single quarter can be distorted by project timing, currency, furloughs, wage actions, tax effects or a large one-off charge. Compare at least four quarters and retain both sequential and year-over-year views. Persistent’s releases provide the following reference points:
| Period | Revenue information | Profitability information | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 FY26 | Revenue up 18.8% year over year | Not stated in the supplied company summary | Shows strong annual growth, but does not establish the quarter’s margin or cash conversion. |
| Q2 FY26 | Revenue up 17.6% year over year | An earlier company statement quoted operating margin of 16.3% | Compare the margin definition with later EBIT margins before drawing a trend line. |
| Q3 FY26 | Not stated in the supplied summary | EBIT margin 16.7% excluding the New Labour Codes impact; 14.4% including it | Demonstrates why normalized and reported margins must both be tracked. |
| Q4 FY26 | $436.0 million; up 3.2% quarter over quarter and 16.2% year over year | Not stated in the supplied summary | Use the sequential slowdown or acceleration as context, not as a standalone verdict. |
| FY26 | $1,654.4 million; up 17.4% year over year | Not stated in the supplied summary | Provides the full-year scale against which the next fiscal year can be judged. |
| Q2 FY27 | $487.6 million; up 7.8% quarter over quarter and 20.0% year over year | EBIT margin 15.0%; PAT ₹3,515.1 million, down 25.4% year over year | Revenue growth remains positive while profit lines require reconciliation. |
One earlier company release quoted CEO and Executive Director Sandeep Kalra saying, “We are pleased to report our 22nd sequential quarter of revenue growth, up 4.2% Q-o-Q and 17.6% Y-o-Y, with operating margin improving to 16.3%.” Treat that statement as management commentary for the period in which it was issued; verify the period and the definition of “operating margin” before comparing it with Q2 FY27 EBIT.

Track more than revenue
For each of the four or more quarters, record revenue growth, EBIT margin, PAT, utilization, attrition, bookings, client concentration and any disclosed organic-growth measure. The objective is to see whether a profit miss is isolated or part of a sequence in which margins, staffing efficiency or customer demand are deteriorating. If a metric is not disclosed for a quarter, mark it as “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
Normalize exceptional items and accounting changes
Reported profit is the number shareholders receive, but normalized profit helps explain the operating engine. Read the notes to the consolidated financial statements and separate:
- recurring delivery, employee and subcontractor costs;
- exceptional charges or credits;
- acquisition-related amortization and integration costs;
- tax-rate changes, deferred-tax movements and one-time settlements;
- foreign-exchange gains or losses; and
- accounting or regulatory changes that alter the period comparison.
Persistent’s Q3 FY26 disclosure is a concrete warning. EBIT was 16.7% when shown excluding the New Labour Codes impact, but 14.4% when that impact was included. Both figures are relevant: 14.4% describes the reported period, while 16.7% can help estimate the underlying operating rate if the charge is genuinely non-recurring. Do not permanently add back a cost that will recur through wages, benefits or compliance spending.
Build a bridge from EBIT to PAT
Ask management or the filing to bridge the year-over-year PAT change through EBIT, other income, finance costs, exceptional items and tax. A large PAT decline with stable EBIT may be primarily tax or non-operating; a falling EBIT margin accompanied by rising employee costs points to an operating issue. Also check diluted shares, because acquisitions, employee awards or other issuance can reduce per-share earnings even when total PAT is unchanged.
Check cash and balance-sheet quality
Reported earnings become more dependable when cash conversion broadly supports them. Read the consolidated cash-flow statement and balance sheet rather than relying on the headline results table. At minimum, inspect:
- cash flow from operations and its relationship to PAT;
- free cash flow after capital expenditure;
- trade receivables, unbilled revenue and contract assets;
- debt, lease liabilities and interest expense;
- goodwill and other acquisition-related intangibles; and
- shares outstanding and any dilution.
Compare operating cash flow with PAT over several quarters, allowing for billing cycles and annual bonus payments. A temporary working-capital build is not automatically a problem, but repeated profit growth without cash collection deserves an explanation. Rising receivables or contract assets can indicate that revenue is being recognized ahead of billing or collection. Conversely, a quarter with weak cash flow may simply reflect timing if subsequent filings show collection.

Test forward demand with TCV, ACV and conversion
Persistent’s Q2 FY27 page reports TCV of $633.5 million and ACV of $481.0 million. These are useful leading indicators, but neither is a guarantee of near-term revenue or profit. Ask four follow-up questions:
- Definition: What duration, renewals, options and pass-through items are included in TCV and ACV?
- Conversion: When will signed work begin contributing revenue, and what implementation or customer dependencies could delay it?
- Economics: What EBIT margin is expected after subcontracting, hiring, travel and transition costs?
- Mix: Which industries, geographies, service lines and largest customers account for the values?
Also review order intake, renewal rates, large-deal wins and management guidance. A high TCV with low ACV, heavy concentration or long conversion periods can support a different valuation than diversified, rapidly converting work. Look for consistency between bookings and utilization plans: winning work without the people or specialist skills to deliver it can defer revenue and compress margins.

Technology-services revenue depends on customers, talent and execution. Before buying, review disclosures for:
- the percentage of revenue from the largest customers;
- vertical exposure, especially sectors with discretionary technology budgets;
- geographic and currency mix;
- attrition, hiring, utilization and subcontractor reliance;
- revenue from fixed-price projects versus time-and-materials work; and
- any contract loss, project impairment or delivery dispute.
High concentration can make one renewal or project ramp disproportionately important. A strong TCV number does not remove that risk. Likewise, low attrition can support margins, while aggressive hiring ahead of demand can depress utilization before revenue arrives. Distinguish management’s targets from achieved data and note the measurement period for every people metric.
Value the shares separately from the operating result
A good business can be a poor purchase at an excessive price, and a temporary miss does not automatically make a share attractive. Obtain a current, dated NSE or BSE price and calculate valuation using forward earnings and free-cash-flow estimates. The official investor pages identified for this subject do not provide a current share price or valuation multiple.

Use at least these measures:
- Forward price-to-earnings: current price divided by next-twelve-month diluted EPS.
- Free-cash-flow yield: expected free cash flow per share divided by current price.
- PEG-style comparison: forward P/E relative to a conservative, explicitly stated earnings-growth rate.
- Enterprise-value measures: useful when debt, leases or substantial cash make equity-only ratios misleading.
Use estimates from a dated source and record whether they are consensus, a broker forecast or your own model. Recalculate after the next results release; a lower price can be offset by lower earnings estimates.
Stress-test the purchase case
Build at least three cases—base, slower-growth and margin-pressure—without disguising assumptions as facts. Vary revenue growth, EBIT margin, currency, tax rate, working-capital timing and the date at which TCV converts to revenue. Then ask how much downside remains if growth slows, a major deal is delayed, or the margin stays near the reported 15.0% rather than returning to a normalized level. A valuation that works only if every deal converts on schedule is not a robust margin of safety.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to compare Persistent with other IT-services shares
If you are choosing among Indian IT-services companies, compare like with like rather than ranking on one quarter’s growth. Use a table containing:
- reported and organic revenue growth;
- EBIT margin and its stability across at least four quarters;
- operating-cash-flow and free-cash-flow conversion;
- customer and vertical concentration;
- TCV, ACV, order intake and conversion speed;
- capital allocation, dividends and dilution;
- valuation relative to expected growth and cash generation; and
- exposure to currency, hiring costs and discretionary technology spending.
Ensure each company uses comparable fiscal periods and margin definitions. “Operating margin” in one release may not be identical to EBIT margin in another, particularly when exceptional items are excluded.

Common mistakes after a sell-off
Assuming the headline explains the miss
News alerts often combine a PAT decline with the word “miss.” Verify the consensus and the accounting bridge before treating the label as analysis.
Best Value
Using only year-over-year growth
Annual growth can look strong while sequential momentum or margins weaken. Review both comparisons and the four-quarter sequence.
Adding back every unusual charge
An item described as exceptional may still represent an ongoing economic cost. Test whether it will recur through payroll, compliance or delivery spending.
Treating TCV as booked revenue
TCV and ACV require conversion, staffing and customer execution. Model timing and margin instead of capitalizing the headline value.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Ignoring cash because revenue is rising
Receivables and contract assets can absorb cash even during revenue growth. Require a cash-flow explanation in the filings.
Buying because the price fell
A lower price is not a valuation thesis. Recalculate forward earnings and free-cash-flow yield after estimates change, then apply a downside case.
What would make the shares more or less compelling?
The evidence would improve if a dated consensus check showed that revenue and EBIT met or exceeded expectations, normalized margins stabilized, operating cash flow followed PAT, and TCV or ACV converted without concentration or delivery problems. The case would weaken if the consensus miss were broad, reported and normalized margins both fell, receivables expanded faster than revenue, guidance declined, or deal conversion was delayed.
Those are decision tests, not a buy signal. The current share price, forward estimates and risk tolerance determine whether the market already reflects either outcome. Until the missing consensus and valuation data are obtained, describing the sell-off as a buying opportunity is premature.
