Before you buy an Apple device during an online sale, verify the exact model and seller, understand who handles returns, check the device’s condition and coverage, and compare the final checkout cost—not just the sale badge. If you are buying a pre-owned iPhone, make sure Activation Lock is off before you pay.
What should I check before buying an Apple device online?
Work through these checks before placing the order. A low price is useful only if the listing describes the device you want and the terms give you a workable way to resolve a problem.

- Identify the seller. Check the seller name shown on the product page and order page. Selling an Apple-branded product does not by itself establish that a retailer is authorized. The seller’s identity matters because it determines which return policy applies.
- Match the exact device. Confirm the model and generation, storage or other configuration, and condition. Listings may describe devices as new, used, open-box, or refurbished; check what that seller means by each condition label.
- Read the return terms. Find the return window, exclusions, who pays return shipping, and any restocking terms. Check the policy that applies to the actual seller and item, rather than assuming every Apple device has the same return rights.
- Check coverage and warranty details. If the listing provides a serial number, enter it in Apple’s coverage lookup to view the coverage and benefits Apple displays. Compare those results with the listing, and verify the delivered device matches it. A lookup is one check; it does not, by itself, establish authenticity, clean ownership, or the listed condition.
- Compare the full checkout total. Include taxes, shipping, and any required service plan. Compare like with like: the same model and configuration, condition, included accessories, coverage, return terms, and seller.
Can I return an Apple product bought from another retailer?
Apple’s U.S. direct-store policy allows returns within 14 calendar days after receipt, subject to the policy’s conditions. That window is for purchases made directly from Apple in the U.S.; it is not a global rule and does not automatically apply to purchases from another retailer. Apple says products bought from other retailers are subject to those retailers’ return and refund policies. Read the applicable terms before ordering: Apple Returns & Refunds and Apple’s authorized reseller policy. Outside the U.S., check the relevant local Apple page, the seller’s terms, and applicable local consumer protections.

Start with Activation Lock. Apple Support’s advice for pre-owned iPhones is: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If an iPhone you bought online displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. See Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance.

Check the iPhone’s repair history
On an eligible iPhone, look in Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History. Apple says this section may be available with iOS 15.2 or later, depending on the model and whether a part was replaced. An “Unknown” label can mean a part was installed incompletely, is nongenuine or previously used, or is not functioning as expected. Treat the label as a reason to ask the seller for an explanation and assess the device carefully; it is not a complete account of the phone’s condition.
Check battery information and the delivered device
Ask what battery condition the seller is representing, and compare that claim with the information available on the iPhone when you receive it. Also make sure the model, configuration, condition, and included accessories match the listing. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance covers these iPhone checks; do not assume the same Activation Lock or Parts and Service History details apply to Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch.

How do new, retailer-refurbished, and Apple Certified Refurbished devices differ?
“Refurbished” is not a universal quality grade. Apple’s stated inspection, warranty, battery, and outer-shell terms apply to Apple’s own Certified Refurbished program, not automatically to devices refurbished by another seller.

Apple’s live refurbished catalog has advertised savings of “up to 15%” when accessed in 2026. That is changeable promotional language, not a guaranteed discount on a particular device. Check the current listing and checkout price at Apple Certified Refurbished Products.

How do I decide whether the sale is worthwhile?
Compare the offer against another listing for the same generation, storage or configuration, and condition. A lower sticker price may come with a shorter return window, less coverage, missing accessories, shipping costs, or a condition grade that allows visible wear. Record these details before comparing:
- Seller named on the order and the party responsible for returns
- Exact model, generation, and configuration
- Condition and the seller’s definition of that grade
- Included accessories and any required service plan
- Warranty or coverage and whether the serial-number result aligns with the listing
- Return window, exclusions, return-shipping responsibility, and restocking terms
- Final checkout total, including tax and shipping
