A vendor’s lifecycle policy can show how clearly it communicates support milestones, but only the model-specific information confirms whether your hardware will continue receiving updates.
Check how long the exact router model will be supported
Router support is a lifecycle, not simply an update button. Before purchasing, find the vendor’s lifecycle policy and the support page for the exact model and hardware revision. Look for the hardware end-of-support date and any separate firmware milestones, such as the end of maintenance updates or a date after which upgrades are restricted.

Cisco Meraki’s published lifecycle policy is an example of a vendor documenting milestones such as end of sale, end of support, firmware maintenance, and firmware restrictions. Its stated typical intervals apply to the policy and products it covers; they are not a general promise about other vendors or a guarantee that every product receives a particular duration of support from the day you buy it.

Use a published policy as evidence of transparency, not as a substitute for checking your candidate. Confirm the dates for the precise model, whether your hardware revision and region are eligible for firmware, and whether any management or support features depend on a cloud service or an active license. Terms can differ, so consult the current product information rather than assuming all models operate alike.

Make security updates easy to find and verify
Check whether the vendor publishes security advisories that identify affected models, firmware versions, and recommended fixes. Also look for a model-specific support page and a clear route for reporting security issues or contacting support. TP-Link Omada’s security advisory page is one example of a vendor-published source to check; verify that the notices cover the product you are considering.
Do not treat the router’s built-in update check as the only source of truth. In an action concerning ASUS, the Federal Trade Commission documented cases where an update tool said a router was current even though newer critical security firmware was available. Check the vendor’s security notices and the router’s model support page as well as its update screen. The FTC’s account of the case explains why the distinction matters.

Compare candidates using the same checklist
Evaluate each router against the same questions, and do not infer update duration from a brand name or product category.

Secure the router when you set it up
After installation, use the router’s administration interface to change its default login credentials and network name, turn off remote management if you do not need it, and select WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Once setup is complete, log out of the administrator account. Menu names vary by device, so use the manual or support page for the model you own.

The FTC’s small-business guidance puts the core actions plainly: “Change the default name and password, turn off remote management, and log out as the administrator once the router is set up.” Read the FTC’s wireless-network guidance.
Keep firmware current and plan for replacement
Check the vendor’s support page and security notices regularly, not just the router’s built-in update screen. The FTC notes that small-business owners may need to visit the router manufacturer’s website for updates. When a security fix is available for your model, follow the vendor’s instructions and confirm the installed firmware version afterward. FTC guidance for small businesses.

Track the vendor’s end-of-life announcements and budget for a replacement before the router loses support. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advises organizations to “Monitor for vendor end-of-life (EOL) announcements for hardware devices, operating system versions, and software, and upgrade as soon as possible.” CISA’s end-of-life product security guidance.

- Good evidence: The vendor publishes lifecycle milestones and model-specific advisories, and clearly states whether your exact hardware revision and region can receive firmware updates.
- Pause before buying: You cannot find a support end date, update eligibility is unclear, or the vendor’s update checker is the only way offered to verify new firmware.
- Plan an alternative: The model is at or near end of support, or the update and management conditions do not fit how your business administers its network.
These checks help assess support transparency and update processes; they do not certify that a router is secure or establish a current best model. Recheck the vendor’s current pages before purchase because advisories, availability, support dates, and terms can change.
