Before committing to an AI accelerator, verify four things: it meets a measured workload target, the exact system can run your software, the deployment site can support it, and the seller can document what capacity is actually reserved and when it will arrive. A chip’s advertised peak performance—or an unqualified “available” claim—does not establish that you can deploy useful capacity.
Start with the workload and deployment route, then test the proposed configuration and turn supply, site-readiness and delivery assumptions into written commitments. This process applies differently to a workstation GPU, an integrated server and rented cloud capacity; they are not interchangeable purchases.

Define the workload and the acceptance target
“AI accelerator” is not a workload specification. Training, online inference and batch inference stress hardware differently, so compare candidates against the job you intend to run rather than against a peak-specification slide. NVIDIA’s NVIDIA-Certified Systems Configuration Guide addresses system configurations for training and inference, while the APPI workload-selection guide recommends using representative workloads to assess options.

Write down the workload inputs
For each materially different job, capture the model and version, training or inference mode, precision, input and output sizes, batch size, concurrency and expected peak request rate. Add memory demand, latency objective, quality threshold, expected utilization, data sensitivity and expected growth. If several workloads will share the system, describe their mix and when peaks overlap.

Set measurable pass criteria
Use a representative trial with the intended model, software path and operating conditions. Separate warm-up from steady-state measurements. Depending on the workload, record useful throughput, P50/P95/P99 latency, error rate, power, utilization, model quality and cost per useful output. Test both normal and peak demand, and agree on acceptance thresholds before placing the order. A result from a different model, batch size or software stack is not a like-for-like comparison.
Be clear about what you are buying
A PCIe accelerator card, a workstation or integrated server, and cloud capacity put different responsibilities on the buyer. Compare the complete route to usable capacity, not just the accelerator name.
| Purchase route | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Standalone card or module | Exact SKU and form factor; host compatibility; power, cooling, firmware and support requirements for that implementation. |
| Complete workstation or server | Exact accelerator, host configuration, network and storage, software support, commissioning responsibilities and delivery scope. |
| Cloud capacity | Exact accelerator model and count, region, quota or reservation status, start date, performance conditions, data terms and expansion conditions. |
For a proposed card or module, check the host’s slot, power delivery, cooling, firmware and support against the exact implementation. A product-family name alone may not identify the form factor or configuration being offered.

Check the host, memory and interconnect
The accelerator is only one part of the system. NVIDIA’s configuration guide covers CPU capacity, system memory, PCIe generation and lane allocation, topology, networking, storage and security. Its recommendations apply to the configurations discussed in that guide, not automatically to every vendor or workload.
Balance the host configuration
NVIDIA recommends balanced GPU placement across CPU sockets and PCIe root ports for its listed configurations, along with adequate CPU capacity. For those configurations it also recommends system memory of at least twice the total GPU memory. Treat that memory figure as vendor guidance, not a universal minimum: confirm the current guide and size the host for your actual workload.
The same guide gives model-specific PCIe examples: RTX PRO 6000 and H200 NVL at PCIe Gen5 x16 or above, and L40S at PCIe Gen4 x16 or above. These are recommendations in the guide for named products; check the current product specifications and proposed host rather than applying them to every accelerator.

For multi-node work, validate the fabric and storage
Confirm network topology and bandwidth, collective-communication needs, storage throughput and failure handling for the intended job. NVIDIA’s guide lists a 200 Gbps minimum network adapter for multi-node inference and up to 400 Gbps per GPU in the configurations it discusses. Those values are not universal thresholds; use them only in the context of the relevant configuration and test.

A substitute that can be delivered sooner may still create migration work or delay deployment. The European Commission’s market-investigation document summarizes: “The market investigation indicates that switching between hardware vendors is technically complex and requires time.” That is the Commission’s description of its investigation, not a guarantee about the effort for every buyer. See the European Commission market-investigation document.
Before committing to a different platform, test the framework, compiler or runtime, drivers, libraries and kernels used by the workload, as well as model serving, monitoring, orchestration and support lifecycle. Include staff familiarity and the time needed to port, debug and validate. A hardware substitution is worthwhile only if the tested end-to-end path meets the acceptance target.

Confirm the site can run the system continuously
A shipment is not the same as deployable capacity. The proposed configuration and density must fit the facility’s available power, cooling, rack space, network fabric, storage and security arrangements. NVIDIA’s AI Factory overview treats sustained AI capacity as an infrastructure-planning problem that includes power, cooling, fabrics, storage and scaling.
For owned deployment, establish who is responsible for commissioning and verify secured power, rack density, cooling method, thermal limits, network and storage readiness, and operational handoff. Align delivery milestones with facility readiness, installation, burn-in and network validation so that hardware does not arrive before the site can accept it.
Make “available” a verifiable supply commitment
Ask the seller to state its role—manufacturer, authorized reseller, broker, cloud operator or facility operator—and identify the exact SKU and configuration. Then establish what the availability claim means for your order, rather than treating a listing or verbal estimate as confirmation. The procurement questions in Infinite Compute’s June 30, 2026 provider article can inform due diligence; its market statistics and company-specific claims are not independently corroborated here and should not be treated as general market facts.

For cloud, request the exact accelerator model and count, region, quota or reservation status, start date, performance-isolation terms, data residency, storage and egress charges, service availability terms and conditions for expansion. A cloud provider’s offer is not proof that a particular allocation is reserved for your project. No current stock, price or delivery date for any model is established by the sources cited here.
Compare owned hardware with rented capacity on the same workload
When utilization or timing is uncertain, compare a purchase with cloud capacity by running the same workload and applying the same acceptance criteria. Include expected utilization, data movement, operations, region, service terms and the cost of the useful output—not only an hourly rate or accelerator specification.
The OECD’s 2025 background note on competition in AI infrastructure describes provider ASICs as generally offered through their own cloud services and designed for specific uses. That makes provider-specific capacity another route to evaluate, not evidence that any particular service has capacity available now. Include data location, security and operational support in the comparison where they matter to the workload.
