What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If a free PS4 game will not download or install, first check Notifications > Downloads, PlayStation service status, your internet connection, and available storage. Then retry the game from Library > Purchased. The symptom matters: a download that will not start usually points to the queue or service; a padlock can indicate an account or license issue; and a completed download that fails to install can involve a corrupted file or system problem.
The menu paths below reflect PlayStation Support guidance accessed October 7, 2026. If labels differ on your console, follow the current wording shown there; availability and account conditions can vary by country.

Start with the download queue and PlayStation service status
When a PS4 game download will not start, check whether it is paused, waiting, or showing an error before deleting anything.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- On the PS4 function screen, open Notifications > Downloads.
- Select the game and choose Pause, then Resume.
- Check PlayStation service status. If Sony reports an issue affecting downloads or the Store, wait until service is restored before trying again.
- If the download still will not start, select it in Downloads, choose Cancel and Delete, and retry from Library > Purchased.
Sony’s PS4 download troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the connection at Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection when a download is stuck. A wired connection may help you rule out a wireless connection problem, but it will not resolve an account, storage, or service outage.

Find the game in the right account’s Library
On PS4, games downloaded from PlayStation Store are available from Library > Purchased. Select the game and choose Download; it installs automatically after the download completes. Make sure you are signed in to the account that obtained the game. Store access or entitlement can depend on the account and region.
If the game appears with a padlock, or a game or add-on that should be available is missing, restore licenses: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore. If relevant, check whether the console is activated as that account’s primary PS4. License restoration addresses access recognition; it does not free storage or fix an active service outage. See PlayStation’s license-restoration instructions.

Check whether the PS4 has enough free space
Storage can prevent a download or installation even when the game is free. Open the game’s Store page on the console and check the required free space under Details. Compare that requirement with Settings > Storage; the amount needed varies by game, so there is no single minimum that applies to every title.
- To remove an application, highlight it in the content launcher or Library, press OPTIONS, and select Delete.
- Deleted games can be downloaded again from your Library. Sony says, “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games — you can redownload the application from your Library whenever you like.”
- If you need more capacity, Sony lists USB extended storage and upgrading the PS4 hard drive as options. See its PS4 extended-storage guide.

| Error | What Sony says | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| CE-37704-1 | The download was cancelled because there was not enough HDD space. | Check Settings > Storage against the game’s required free space in Store Details, then make room and retry. |
| CE-34679-9 | The game could not download because an identical file is already saved on the console. | Check the console’s existing content and the download queue before retrying. |
| CE-37732-2 | The downloaded file was not installed properly and may have been corrupted during download. | In Notifications > Downloads, highlight the failed content, press OPTIONS, and delete it. For a patch, highlight the game and choose OPTIONS > Check for Update. For a Store game, download it again from Library > Purchased. |

PS4 games normally install automatically after download. If installation fails or the game reports an application error, first make sure the console’s system software is current and restart the PS4. For a game that is still in the download queue, delete the failed download and obtain it again from Library.

For error CE-41839-5, Sony recommends current system software, a full restart, restoring licenses, deleting and redownloading the game—using a wired connection if possible—and then rebuilding the database if the error persists. Its CE-41839-5 guidance reserves initialization for a continuing problem after those steps.
If simpler checks have not fixed persistent download trouble, Sony lists Safe Mode > Rebuild Database as a troubleshooting step. Use the instructions in Sony’s download guide to enter Safe Mode and select the option. Rebuilding the database is not the same as initializing the PS4; do not select initialization as a routine download fix.
Keep initialization as a last resort
Initialization is a destructive step, not an ordinary way to fix a download. Sony warns that initializing or reinstalling system software erases all PS4 data and advises backing up first. If Sony’s guidance points you to this step after persistent problems, read its system-software reinstallation instructions carefully. Do not use unofficial system-software files or interrupt a system-software installation.
