Before ordering a washer-dryer combo, prove that the exact model will fit through your home, connect to your utilities, handle your normal load size, and dry clothes in a time and cost you can accept. Use the model’s installation manual as the final authority; product-category dimensions and generic hookup advice are not sufficient.
- Space and delivery: Measure the laundry opening and every part of the route from the delivery vehicle to that opening.
- Utilities: Match the specified outlet, circuit, water connection, drain arrangement, and any exhaust duct to your home.
- Moisture: Determine whether drying exhausts outdoors or condenses water into a drain or tank.
- Throughput: Compare both wash and dry capacities, complete-cycle time, and how many loads your household needs each day.
- Ownership: Check energy information, filter and condenser access, cleaning tasks, service coverage, warranty, and local incentives.
1. Measure the appliance space and the entire delivery route
A combo that fits an alcove can still be impossible to install if it cannot make the trip through the front door, hallway, stairwell, or elevator. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center (PNNL) recommends measuring both the installation space and the delivery path. LG likewise directs buyers to verify the chosen model’s dimensions and installation clearances in its pre-purchase and installation checklist.

Measure the laundry location
- Record the opening’s width, height, and depth at the narrowest points, not just the nominal cabinet dimensions.
- Measure the distance from the back wall to nearby cabinets, counters, doors, and plumbing fixtures.
- Allow the manufacturer’s required top, side, rear, and front clearances. A machine’s published width and depth do not include every service or ventilation allowance.
- Check the door swing or reversible-door instructions. The door must open far enough to load laundry and reach the lint filter, drain filter, and detergent area.
- Confirm that controls and the display remain reachable after the unit is installed, especially beneath a counter or in a closet.
Trace the delivery route
- Measure the exterior doorway and threshold.
- Measure interior doors, hallways, and the narrowest point around every turn.
- Check ceiling height and stair width, including landings where the appliance may need to be tilted.
- Verify elevator door and cabin dimensions if the appliance will be delivered by elevator.
- Account for handrails, trim, baseboards, radiators, and other projections that reduce usable width.
- Ask the retailer or installer how much packaging will be removed before moving the unit and whether the appliance can be tilted safely.
Use the packed and unpacked dimensions when they are supplied. If the route only works after removing a door or railing, arrange that work before delivery and confirm that the installer permits it. Never assume a “standard” 24- or 27-inch machine will fit; verify the model number’s dimensional drawing and clearance diagram.
2. Match the exact model to your electrical and plumbing connections
Washer-dryer combos are not wired or plumbed identically. Voltage, outlet style, circuit requirements, water connections, drain height, and exhaust requirements can change with the drying configuration and model. Read the installation section for the exact model before buying and have a qualified electrician or plumber resolve any mismatch.

Electrical service
Check the required voltage, outlet type, amperage, grounding, and dedicated-circuit instructions. Do not rely on the outlet used by an old washer or dryer; a previous appliance may have had different requirements. Avoid extension cords and adapters unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them.
As an illustration of why model-specific checking matters, Samsung’s U.S. buying guide lists a 120-volt outlet for one ventless combo example and a 240-volt outlet for a vented combo example, with water and drain connections for both. Those figures describe the cited Samsung configurations, not a universal rule for every combo. Water supply
- Confirm the required hot, cold, or specified water inlet arrangement.
- Locate shutoff valves where they can be reached after installation.
- Check hose length and routing so hoses are not sharply bent or crushed against the wall.
- Inspect the condition of existing valves and supply hoses; replace corroded or bulging parts before the appliance arrives.
Drain connection
Identify the drain standpipe, sink connection, or other approved outlet described by the manual. Verify its height, diameter, location, and ability to handle the machine’s discharge. A drain that is too low, too high, restricted, or too far away can cause leaks, siphoning, slow draining, or error codes. Make sure the hose can be secured as directed rather than pushed loosely into a drain.

Exhaust duct, if the model is vented
A vented combo needs a suitable exhaust route to the exterior. Check duct diameter, maximum length, allowable elbows, termination location, and clearance from combustible materials in the installation instructions. If your home has no compliant exterior route, a vented model may require construction work or may not be a practical choice.
3. Decide whether vented or ventless drying suits the room
Vented configurations
A vented dryer moves heated, moist air through a duct and out of the building. This requires a code-compliant exterior termination and regular inspection of the duct for lint buildup or obstruction. Confirm that the proposed route is permitted in your building and that its length and bends fall within the model’s limits.

Ventless heat-pump configurations
A ventless heat-pump system recirculates air rather than sending exhaust outdoors. It condenses moisture collected from the clothes, so it avoids an exterior dryer vent and can be easier to place in apartments, interior rooms, or closets. “Ventless” does not mean “no plumbing”: the condensed water still needs an approved drain path or a collection tank that you empty.
PNNL’s guidance, Install a Ventless Clothes Dryer or Combo Washer-Dryer, explains that condensate may use a drain hose or tank. Before purchase, locate the condensate outlet, determine whether the unit shares the washer drain, and establish how often a tank would need emptying. A tank that is difficult to reach can turn every load into a maintenance chore.

- Where does air move during drying, and what clearances are required around the cabinet?
- Where does water leave the appliance, and can that route remain permanently connected?
- Can the door, filters, drain pump, and condensate components be serviced in the proposed location?
- Does the installation manual impose closet-door ventilation or minimum room-volume rules?
Choose the configuration that your building can legally and physically support, not simply the one with the shortest feature list. The electrical requirement, clearances, and installation steps remain model-specific even within the vented and ventless categories.
4. Size capacity for washing and drying, not washing alone
Combo specifications usually give separate wash and dry capacities. Drying capacity can be lower than washing capacity, so a drum that accepts a full wash load may require part of that load to be removed before drying. Compare the two numbers in the manufacturer’s documentation and test them against your actual laundry pattern.
Translate capacity into your household routine
- Estimate the weight and bulk of a normal mixed load, plus your largest loads of towels, bedding, or work clothing.
- Check whether bulky items need a reduced load for the drum to tumble and dry evenly.
- Determine whether you can wash a full load but dry only a smaller portion without creating an inconvenient transfer step.
- Consider how many people generate laundry each day and whether school, sports, uniforms, or caregiving create peaks.
PNNL cautions that some heat-pump dryers have smaller capacities than conventional dryers and that some models may take longer. Validate the exact combo’s wash limit, dry limit, and instructions for oversized items; category averages cannot predict a specific model.

Think about concurrent loads
A single drum cannot wash the next load while it is drying the current one. If your household depends on continuous throughput, compare the complete wash-and-dry time with the number of loads you need. A separate washer and dryer can process two loads at once; a combo trades that parallel capacity for the convenience of leaving one load in the drum.
5. Check complete cycle time and the settings you will actually use
Look for the duration of a complete wash-and-dry program, not only the wash time or a marketing claim about a fast cycle. ENERGY STAR’s 2024 laundry factsheet describes all-in-one washer/dryer models as completing a single load in about 1.5–2 hours without transferring clothes between machines. That is a published description of the referenced models, not a guarantee for every program or household.
Actual duration changes with load size, fabric, spin speed, selected dryness, water temperature, incoming water conditions, and sensor decisions. Samsung’s guide lists different example times for specific models and cycles, demonstrating why the cycle table in the manual is more useful than a single headline number.
Build a realistic throughput estimate
- Find the manual’s stated time for the everyday wash-and-dry cycle.
- Check whether that time assumes a small, standard, or maximum load.
- Look for separate times for towels, delicates, high-spin, timed dry, and energy-saving programs.
- Add time for loading, unloading, cooldown, and any tank emptying or filter cleaning.
- Compare the resulting daily capacity with your household’s required loads.
If you often need a second load before the first one is dry, the combo’s convenience may not compensate for its single-drum bottleneck. If you normally run one load at a time and value not having to transfer wet clothes, the same operating pattern may be acceptable.
6. Compare energy use and total operating cost carefully
Use the model’s energy label or specification sheet together with your local electricity rate. A lower purchase price can be offset by higher consumption, while a more efficient design may cost more upfront but reduce running costs. Include water use if the published documentation provides it.

ENERGY STAR’s 2024 factsheet says certified heat-pump dryers use around 70% less energy than conventional dryers. It also states that the all-in-one models covered by its comparison can save $130 per year in utility costs versus conventional models. Both figures are ENERGY STAR comparisons under its stated assumptions; they are not guaranteed savings for a particular combo, climate, utility tariff, load pattern, or household. Calculate a household-specific estimate
- Record the appliance’s published annual energy use or energy-per-cycle figure.
- Multiply by your expected cycles per week and your electricity price.
- Separate wash-only, dry-only, and combined-cycle use when the documentation provides separate values.
- Allow for higher use when loads are large, clothing is very wet, or you select hotter or drier settings.
- Check current utility rebates or tax incentives for the exact model and your location; eligibility changes and must be verified locally.
Do not apply the 70% or $130 figures to a model that is not covered by the cited comparison, and do not treat them as a promise of payback.

A combo combines two appliance functions in one cabinet, so routine care and a failure can affect both washing and drying. Before buying, download the owner’s and installation manuals and identify every user-serviceable component.
Filters and condensers
PNNL advises ensuring that lint traps are accessible. Find the lint filter, drain-pump filter, and any heat-pump condenser or air filter in the manual’s diagrams. Check whether each can be removed without pulling the appliance out and whether the cleaning interval is practical for your household. A filter hidden behind a kick plate or a tight closet may be easy to neglect.
Condensate and drain care
For a ventless unit, determine whether condensate flows automatically to a drain or accumulates in a tank. Confirm the tank’s capacity, full-tank warning, access, and emptying procedure. For any model, learn how to clear the drain pump and handle a blocked hose without flooding the room.

Parts, service, and warranty
- Check how long the full appliance warranty lasts and whether motor, compressor, drum, electronics, and labor have different terms.
- Confirm that authorized service is available in your area and ask about typical parts lead times.
- Look up the cost and availability of replacement filters, hoses, door seals, pumps, and other wear items.
- Verify who performs installation and whether improper hookups can void warranty coverage.
A favorable warranty is less useful if no qualified service provider covers your region. Obtain these details for the exact model number, not merely the manufacturer’s product family.
8. Use a model-by-model comparison sheet
Put competing models on one page so a low price or attractive feature cannot hide an installation problem. Record the source and date of every figure, because specifications can vary by country and revision.

Mark any value that the manufacturer has not stated as “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an estimate. A missing specification is a reason to ask the seller or manufacturer before placing the order.

- Choose the exact model and region. Download its current installation and owner manuals.
- Measure the route and room. Keep a written diagram with the narrowest dimensions and required clearances.
- Confirm utilities. Compare voltage, outlet, water, drain, and duct or condensate instructions with the existing installation.
- Arrange required work. Schedule electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or duct changes before delivery.
- Clear and protect the route. Remove obstacles, protect floors, and confirm door or trim removal plans with the installer.
- Verify delivery and installation terms. Ask whether leveling, hose replacement, duct connection, and removal of the old appliance are included.
- Inspect before accepting. Check the cabinet, door, controls, hoses, and power cord for shipping damage.
- Run the commissioning checks. Follow the manual’s leveling, leak, drain, and test-cycle procedure before loading normal laundry.
10. Watch for these pre-purchase red flags
- The listing gives only generic dimensions and no clearance diagram for the exact model.
- The seller cannot state the required voltage, circuit, or outlet type.
- A vented model is proposed for a room with no approved exterior duct route.
- A ventless model has a condensate tank, but the tank is inaccessible in the planned installation.
- Wash capacity is prominent while dry capacity or full-cycle times are missing.
- Filter, condenser, or drain-pump access requires moving a built-in appliance.
- Energy savings are quoted without identifying the test basis, comparison appliance, or region.
- Warranty and authorized-service details are unavailable for your location.
Pause the purchase until each red flag is resolved in writing. The installation manual, not a retailer’s generic description, controls fit, hookups, clearances, and maintenance.
