Sealed ventless designs dry at low heat, so GE says laundry may feel damp on first touch; shaking each item can make it feel dry within seconds. If items remain genuinely wet, the usual causes are an overloaded drying drum, insufficient spin extraction, restricted drainage or a setup issue specific to the combo’s drying system.
Use the checks below in order. Start with the no-tools tests, then follow your model’s manual for filters, hoses and installation. Water-supply and drain-hose requirements are not identical across combo designs.

First, determine whether the laundry is wet or merely humid
Do not diagnose a failed heater or pump from a cool-feeling garment alone. In a sealed, low-heat ventless drum, the air remains humid at the end of the cycle. GE describes this for its UltraFast combo: clothes may not feel warm or fully dry on first touch because they have been drying in a humid environment. Whirlpool gives similar guidance for ventless systems, noting that items can feel slightly damp immediately after removal and feel dry after being shaken out or hung.

- Remove two or three items as soon as the cycle ends.
- Shake each item open instead of judging a tightly folded or bunched section.
- Wait a few seconds and feel the fabric again, including seams and thick areas.
- Hang the items briefly if the care instructions allow it. If the apparent dampness dissipates quickly, it was likely end-of-cycle humidity rather than retained water.
This behavior is not proof that every combo is operating correctly. If towels, waistbands, pockets or the center of dense garments remain wet after shaking and brief airing, continue with the checks below. A new or worsening change in performance also deserves troubleshooting even if the machine previously left laundry merely humid.

Why combo drying takes longer than a separate dryer
A combo has to wash and dry in one drum, and many models are ventless. In the water-condensing design described by Whirlpool, heated air moves through the drum, then a water-cooled condenser removes moisture. The resulting condensed water is sent through the washer’s drain hose. That process does not behave like a conventional vented dryer exhausting hot, moist air outdoors, so a combo cycle can take longer and clothing can feel cooler at completion.
LG describes another distinction in its support guidance. Some older or general combo systems use a small amount of water to condense moisture; newer “water-free” systems send steam through the drain hose instead. Because both arrangements exist, a water tap that must be open on one model may not be part of the drying process on another. The owner’s manual and the labels on your exact model control.
Fix the most common cause: too much laundry for the drying load
Washing capacity and drying capacity are often different. The drum may have room to wash a full load, but densely packed laundry cannot tumble and expose its surfaces to the drying air. Whirlpool recommends loading its all-in-one machines to half the drum or less for drying. LG instructs owners of applicable models to stay below the marked “Fill up to this line” level. Neither instruction is a universal ratio for every brand, so use the fill line and capacity guidance supplied for your machine.

- Stop treating the wash capacity as the dry capacity. If the manual gives a dry-load limit, follow that limit.
- Remove roughly half the load and run the drying cycle again when no separate dry-capacity figure is available and the drum is tightly packed. This is a diagnostic reduction, not a claim that every model must always be half full.
- Unfold sheets, trousers and hoodies. Separate garments that have twisted into a heavy bundle.
- Keep heavy articles from dominating a small load. Towels, denim and thick cotton hold more water and can shield lighter pieces.
- If your manual recommends separating heavy and light fabrics, follow that instruction rather than combining everything after washing.
Dense folded areas can stay damp even when the outside of an item feels dry. Open pockets, cuffs and waistbands before judging the result.
Extract more water before the dry cycle
Every drop removed during spinning is water the drying system does not have to evaporate or condense. Whirlpool suggests a high-speed spin when appropriate, and LG advises including a spin cycle when drying wet items. Select only a speed permitted for the fabric, load balance and model; delicate items may require a slower setting.
Run a separate spin as a diagnostic
- Move the wet load, or the portion you plan to dry, into a balanced arrangement.
- Select the highest spin speed allowed by the garment-care instructions and your appliance manual.
- Run the spin-only program.
- Check whether the laundry is still unusually saturated before starting drying.
- Dry the smaller, well-spun load and compare the result with the previous cycle.
If the washer cannot reach or hold spin speed, redistribute the load and check the manual for imbalance guidance. Do not force a high-speed setting on fabrics that prohibit it.

Check drainage and the pump filter safely
Poor drainage can leave clothes wet because water remains in the system instead of leaving through the drain route. GE’s troubleshooting guidance for clothes that remain wet directs owners to the manual for checking and cleaning the pump filter. Filter location, access panel, residual-water procedure and cleaning method differ by model.
Manual-directed drainage checks
- Look for a drain error, standing water or an unusually slow emptying stage.
- Read the drainage and pump-filter section of the owner’s manual for your exact model.
- Follow its instructions for switching off and unplugging the appliance, handling residual water and opening the filter access.
- Remove lint, coins or other debris only as the manual permits; do not force a stuck cap or reach into moving parts.
- Close the filter and access cover exactly as specified, then run the manual’s recommended rinse, drain or test program.
A filter that looks clear does not prove the pump, hose or household drain is unrestricted. If the unit still drains poorly after the prescribed inspection, stop repeating cycles and arrange qualified service.
Identify your drying system before checking water and hoses
Water and drain checks are the area where generic advice causes the most confusion. LG’s support articles distinguish water-condensing systems from newer water-free arrangements, and explicitly caution that an all-model guide may not match an individual product.
| System characteristic | What the cited manufacturer guidance describes | What to verify on your model |
|---|---|---|
| Water-condensing drying | A small amount of water cools the condenser; condensed moisture leaves through the washer drain hose. | Confirm the supply taps are open and hoses are connected and routed as the manual specifies. |
| Newer water-free drying | Steam is discharged through the drain hose rather than being condensed with the older water-use process. | Route the drain hose exactly as specified. A U-shaped trap or water retained in the hose can prevent steam from escaping effectively. |
| Model-specific maintenance | Drain and filter arrangements vary among products. | Use the product manual for pump-filter access, cleaning frequency and safe testing. |
If your model uses water during drying
Check that both relevant water taps are open, inlet hoses are connected to the correct ports and there are no kinks. Use the connection diagram in the manual; do not assume a hose arrangement from another appliance. A closed tap or incorrect connection can interfere with the condensing stage.
If your model is described as water-free
Inspect the drain-hose route for a high loop, U-shaped trap or a section holding water where the manufacturer says steam should pass. Correct the routing only to the dimensions and anchor points in your manual. Do not remove a required standpipe connection or create an improvised vent.

Review installation and airflow only when your model requires it
Ventless does not mean installation details are irrelevant. Whirlpool’s all-in-one closet guidance calls for ventilation openings and clearances, including 3 inches (76 mm) at the front, 1 inch (25 mm) at the sides and typically 4 inches (102 mm) at the rear. Those figures are Whirlpool’s stated guidance for applicable installations, not a universal clearance rule. Check the installation instructions supplied with your exact unit before moving it or changing a closet door.

Keep intake and exhaust areas identified by the manufacturer unobstructed. Do not drill vents, remove panels or apply a separate dryer’s venting instructions to a sealed combo unless the manual expressly requires it.
Extra checks that prevent a false diagnosis
Compare like-for-like cycles
Before concluding that performance has changed, compare a small, balanced load on the same drying program. A mixed load of towels, denim and lightweight synthetics can behave very differently from a load of thin garments. Record whether the drum completed the cycle, whether a drain error appeared and whether only thick sections stayed wet. These observations are more useful to a technician than the statement that the machine “does not dry.”
Check the result at several points
Touch a shirt panel, a seam, a pocket and the center of a towel. One humid item in an otherwise dry load may simply have been folded against another garment. Conversely, a dry outer surface with a wet waistband or pocket means the load needs better tumbling, more space or longer treatment. Do not put away laundry until the thickest parts meet the dryness level you need.
Allow for the machine’s low-heat feel
A ventless heat-pump or other low-heat design will not necessarily produce the hot, freshly-dried feeling of a traditional vented dryer. Temperature by itself is not a pass-or-fail test. Judge moisture after shaking and brief airing, then look for persistent wetness, standing water or a repeated decline in results.
What not to do
- Do not add another full wash load to a drum that is already packed for drying.
- Do not leave a water tap closed merely because the unit is labeled ventless; some ventless systems still use water for condensation.
- Do not open a pump filter without following the model’s residual-water and electrical-safety directions.
- Do not force a filter cap, remove panels or reach into the drum or pump while the appliance is connected to power.
- Do not copy hose routing, clearances or fill limits from a different brand.
- Do not buy a heater, condenser or pump solely because clothing feels cool at the end of a cycle.
- Do not repeatedly run long cycles when the appliance cannot drain; unresolved drainage should be serviced.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so a harmless humidity characteristic is not confused with a repairable fault.
- Assess the fabric. Shake out several items and wait briefly. If they quickly feel dry, the result may be normal ventless end-of-cycle humidity.
- Reduce the load. Follow the fill line or dry-capacity instruction; use half the drum or less only where the model guidance calls for it, such as Whirlpool’s all-in-one recommendation.
- Unfold dense items. Open pockets, cuffs and bundled sections, and separate heavy and light pieces when the manual advises.
- Improve extraction. Run an allowed high-speed or spin-only cycle, then dry the better-extracted load.
- Verify drainage. Look for standing water or drain errors, and perform only the pump-filter inspection and cleaning described in the manual.
- Match hose and water checks to the design. Confirm taps for a water-condensing system; inspect steam drain routing for a water-free system.
- Check installation requirements. Confirm model-specific clearances and ventilation openings, particularly for a closet installation.
- Escalate if unresolved. Arrange qualified service when laundry remains wet after these checks or the appliance cannot drain.
Symptoms and the most useful next check
| What you notice | Most useful first action | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Cool or humid feel immediately after completion, but garments dry after shaking | Remove and shake several items; allow brief airing. | Sealed low-heat drums can leave normal end-of-cycle humidity. |
| Whole load is wet and drum was tightly packed | Dry a smaller load below the model’s fill mark. | Drying needs free tumbling and exposed fabric surfaces. |
| Clothes come out wetter than they did previously | Run an allowed spin-only cycle and compare. | Extra water left after extraction increases drying work. |
| Water remains in the drum or a drain error appears | Follow the manual’s drain and pump-filter procedure. | Restricted drainage can leave laundry wet. |
| Drying changed after installation or hose movement | Identify the system and verify tap and drain-hose routing. | Condensing and water-free systems have different requirements. |
| Closet-installed unit dries slowly | Check the model’s required openings and clearances. | Installation restrictions can affect the intended operation of applicable units. |
When the problem is probably not a user setting
Contact a qualified appliance technician when the machine cannot drain, when wet laundry persists after a small balanced load and permitted spin, or when the manual-directed filter and hose checks do not restore performance. GE specifically recommends trained service when its troubleshooting suggestions do not resolve clothes remaining wet.

Do not order a heater, pump or condenser based on damp clothes alone. The available manufacturer guidance does not identify one failed part without the model number, error codes, drainage behavior and a description of the load. A technician can test those components safely and account for the particular drying architecture.

How to prevent repeat damp loads
- Keep the model manual accessible, including the installation and pump-filter sections.
- Use the marked dry-load line or the model’s stated dry capacity rather than filling to the wash limit.
- Unfold thick laundry before drying and avoid tightly packed bundles.
- Choose an extraction speed that suits the fabric but removes as much water as the manual allows.
- Clean the pump filter on the schedule and by the procedure specified for your model.
- Do not kink, trap or reroute the drain hose without checking the manufacturer’s diagram.
- After moving the machine, recheck every hose and tap connection before judging drying performance.
- For closet installations, preserve the openings and clearances specified for that exact unit.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Manufacturer support pages establish that slight humidity can be normal for certain sealed ventless combos, that ventless drying commonly takes longer, and that load size, extraction and drainage materially affect results. They do not establish one universal drying mechanism, one universal water requirement or a single replacement part that fixes every damp-load complaint. Treat the manual for your model as the controlling source whenever its instructions differ from a general support article.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my clothes feel damp right when the combo finishes?
A sealed, low-heat ventless drum can leave laundry feeling cool or humid on first touch. Shake out two or three items and wait a few seconds. If they quickly feel dry, the sensation is likely normal end-of-cycle humidity. Persistent wetness in towels, pockets, seams or waistbands is not explained by that characteristic alone.
How full should a washer-dryer combo be for drying?
Drying capacity is often lower than washing capacity. Whirlpool recommends half the drum or less for its all-in-one machines, while LG tells owners of applicable models to stay below the marked fill line. Use your own model’s limit; do not treat either brand’s instruction as universal.
Should I run another spin before drying?
Yes, when the manual and fabric-care labels permit it. Whirlpool suggests a high-speed spin and LG advises including a spin cycle when drying wet items. A spin-only test can show whether unusually saturated laundry is the main cause. Use a slower speed for fabrics that require it.
Does a ventless combo need the water taps open during drying?
It depends on the design. Some systems use a small amount of water in a condenser, while newer water-free arrangements discharge steam through the drain hose. Check the manual for your exact model before opening or closing taps or changing inlet connections.

Can a drain hose make clothes stay wet?
Yes. Poor drainage can leave water in the appliance and laundry. On a water-free design, a U-shaped trap or retained water in the hose can also stop steam from escaping effectively. Follow the model’s specified hose route and perform filter checks only as the manual directs.
What should I check if the combo suddenly stopped drying well?
Compare a small, balanced load with the same program, then check spin extraction, standing water or drain errors, the pump-filter procedure and hose or tap connections. If performance remains poor after those model-approved checks, arrange qualified service rather than repeatedly running long cycles.
Are closet clearances the same for every washer-dryer combo?
No. Whirlpool gives applicable all-in-one closet guidance of 3 inches at the front, 1 inch at the sides and typically 4 inches at the rear, plus ventilation openings. Those numbers are not universal. Use the installation instructions for your exact unit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I replace a heater or pump because clothes are damp?
Not without diagnosis. Damp clothing can result from normal humidity, excess load, weak extraction, restricted drainage or model-specific hose setup. A technician needs the model, error codes and drainage behavior to identify a failed component safely.
The Bottom Line
First shake and air a few items to distinguish normal ventless humidity from real wetness. Then reduce the drying load, improve permitted spin extraction, check drainage and the pump filter by the manual, and verify water and hose routing for your specific drying system. If laundry remains wet, the unit cannot drain or the problem persists after these checks, stop guessing at parts and call a qualified appliance technician.
