Paper and Sponge at a glance
| Server need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Plugins from the broad Bukkit/Spigot ecosystem, with Paper-specific performance work | Paper | Paper is based on Spigot, extends Bukkit and Spigot APIs, and is designed to improve performance and provide additional server features and API. |
| Forge mods plus server-side Sponge plugins | SpongeForge | Sponge’s Forge-based implementation is the path intended for MinecraftForge mods. |
| Sponge plugins, but no Forge mods | SpongeVanilla | It provides the Sponge implementation on a vanilla-based server without adding Forge. |
| A version-sensitive or unusual technical stack | Either, after compatibility checks | The correct choice depends on exact Minecraft version, API, loader, dependencies and hardware. Neither project has a cited universal performance win. |
This is a choice of server software for Minecraft: Java Edition. It does not select a client modpack, and it does not make a plugin written for one API automatically usable on the other.
What Paper provides
PaperMC describes Paper as a Minecraft: Java Edition game server based on Spigot, intended to improve performance and offer advanced features and API. Its product information calls out asynchronous chunk loading and optimizations affecting the light engine, hoppers and entities. Paper also extends the Bukkit and Spigot APIs, which is why many existing Bukkit or Spigot plugins are candidates for a Paper server.

Paper’s plugin model
Paper has its own plugin loader. Paper’s documentation says Paper plugins can communicate with Bukkit plugins, while APIs that exist only in Paper are available only when the server is running Paper. A plugin that uses only common Bukkit or Spigot interfaces may therefore be portable, but that is a compatibility question for the plugin’s author and release, not a promise that every plugin will work.

SpongeVanilla
SpongeVanilla is the natural choice when your server needs Sponge plugins but does not need Forge’s mod loader. It keeps the implementation vanilla-based while exposing SpongeAPI to plugins. This is not a way to run Bukkit or Spigot plugins: Sponge plugins target SpongeAPI, so you must check for a Sponge version of every feature you need.
SpongeForge
SpongeForge combines Forge with SpongeAPI. Sponge’s implementation guide says to choose SpongeForge when you want to run MinecraftForge mods, and also allows it for a plugin-only server. It is the relevant option when gameplay or server functionality depends on Forge mods as well as Sponge plugins.

Sponge’s FAQ notes that Sponge cannot create client-side blocks, textures or mobs without client modifications. A server-side Sponge installation therefore cannot by itself make an unmodified client understand content that requires new client assets. Confirm the client requirements of every Forge mod before promising a joinable experience to players. The FAQ is available at https://github.com/SpongePowered/SpongeDocs/blob/stable/source/about/faq.rst.
Plugins, mods and APIs: the compatibility boundary
Paper and Sponge should be treated as different plugin ecosystems. Paper plugins use Paper’s loader and the Bukkit/Spigot/Paper API family. Sponge plugins target SpongeAPI and are distributed through Sponge’s plugin ecosystem, including the official Ore repository. A plugin written for one API should not be assumed to run on the other.

| Component you want to install | Paper | SpongeVanilla | SpongeForge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bukkit or Spigot plugin | Potentially compatible; confirm the plugin’s release and dependencies | Not automatically compatible | Not automatically compatible |
| Paper-only API plugin | Requires Paper | Not compatible | Not compatible |
| Sponge plugin | Not automatically compatible | Designed for SpongeAPI; verify version | Designed for SpongeAPI; verify version |
| Forge mod | Not the Forge implementation | Not the Forge implementation | Use this implementation, subject to the mod’s Minecraft and Forge support |
Before choosing, make an inventory with the plugin or mod name, its supported Minecraft versions, loader requirement, dependencies, client-side requirements and configuration files. If any must-have component lists only SpongeAPI, do not plan a Paper deployment around it. If a component requires Forge, SpongeVanilla and Paper are not substitutes for SpongeForge.
Which one is faster?
Paper makes a qualitative performance claim and identifies optimization work in areas such as chunk loading, lighting, hoppers and entities. The cited official material does not publish a controlled, version-matched Sponge-versus-Paper benchmark, so there is no defensible universal answer that one is always faster.

Performance depends on the complete workload:
- Minecraft version and the exact server build.
- World size, terrain generation and exploration rate.
- View distance and simulation distance settings.
- Concurrent player count and activity patterns.
- Which plugins or Forge mods are loaded and what they do each tick.
- CPU, memory, storage and operating-system configuration.
For a fair decision, build a test copy of the intended world and use the same hardware, settings, player scenario and content on each candidate. Record startup behavior, tick stability, memory use and the symptoms players actually notice. Label the result with the Minecraft version and software builds; a result from one release is not proof about another.
Do not select SpongeForge solely because it can host Forge mods, or Paper solely because it is advertised as optimized. The implementation that can load your required content without workarounds is usually the operationally better choice.

How to decide for common server plans
Plugin-only community server
Start with Paper when your feature list consists of Bukkit, Spigot or Paper plugins. Its API lineage and performance-oriented design match that use case. Confirm that every critical plugin supports the Minecraft version you intend to run and whether it relies on Paper-only APIs.
Forge modpack server with administrative plugins
Choose SpongeForge when Forge mods are a requirement and you also want Sponge plugins for permissions, administration or other server functions. Test the exact modpack and Sponge build together; compatibility is determined by versions and dependencies, not by the product names alone.
Sponge plugin server without Forge
Choose SpongeVanilla when you specifically need SpongeAPI plugins and want to avoid Forge. Sponge’s documentation also permits SpongeForge for plugin-only servers, so compare the implementation requirements of your selected plugins before deployment.
Mixed or uncertain requirements
Do not choose by reputation. Create a compatibility matrix first. If a required item has no supported build for one candidate, that candidate is eliminated regardless of theoretical performance. If all items support both, stage both on identical hardware and measure the workload you actually expect.
Best Value
Requirements and version planning
Both choices require Java and ordinary server administration. Sponge’s FAQ confirms that Sponge and Minecraft need a Java runtime. The available official material does not establish one universal hardware minimum for every release, so avoid treating a single CPU, memory or storage figure as a guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDocument these details before installation:
- The exact Minecraft version, including whether it is a particular minor release.
- The server implementation and build that supports that version.
- The Java runtime version required by that implementation and by each mod or plugin.
- Allocated memory, available storage and a backup location.
- Network access, firewall rules and who will administer the server.
- Whether players need client-side mods, resource packs or a matching Forge setup.
Keep the production world separate from experiments. A version change, loader change or API change can affect saved data, commands, permissions and configuration even when the world itself appears to open normally.
Deployment checklists
Paper checklist
- Choose the Minecraft version your players and required plugins support.
- Obtain the Paper build intended for that version from PaperMC’s official project documentation.
- Install the Java runtime required by that Minecraft release and verify that the server process can use it.
- Start an isolated test instance rather than pointing the first run at your production world.
- Add plugins one at a time, checking their documented dependencies and API requirements.
- Test login, permissions, commands, world generation, chunk loading and any plugin-specific workflows.
- Capture a backup and a rollback copy before moving the tested configuration to production.
SpongeVanilla checklist
- Select a Minecraft version for which the SpongeVanilla implementation and all required Sponge plugins publish compatible builds.
- Install the supported Java runtime and create a separate test directory.
- Install SpongeVanilla according to the current Sponge documentation.
- Add Sponge plugins from their stated sources, checking SpongeAPI and Minecraft version requirements.
- Validate permissions, commands, world data and configuration changes with a small test group.
- Check server logs for dependency or API errors before inviting the full player base.
- Back up the tested world and configuration before production cutover.
SpongeForge checklist
- Define the exact Forge version, Minecraft version and mod list first.
- Confirm that the SpongeForge build supports that Forge and Minecraft combination.
- Install the required Java runtime and stage the server away from production data.
- Install Forge and SpongeForge as specified by their current documentation, then add mods and Sponge plugins in a controlled order.
- Check which mods require matching client installations or other client-side changes.
- Test world loading, mod interactions, permissions, commands and player connection with the actual client setup.
- Only after a successful restore test should you migrate the configuration and world to production.
Migrating between Paper and Sponge
The cited documentation describes separate APIs and plugin loaders and does not promise seamless migration. Treat a switch as a new deployment.
- Freeze and back up. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world, configuration, permissions data and plugin or mod files, and keep an untouched rollback copy.
- Inventory dependencies. List every feature supplied by a Bukkit, Spigot, Paper or Sponge plugin, and every Forge mod. Mark replacements that exist for the destination API.
- Check version support. For each replacement, verify Minecraft version, loader, API level and dependencies. Do not infer support from a similarly named project.
- Build a test instance. Use a copy of the world and a separate data directory. Never test an unverified loader against the only production copy.
- Recreate configuration. Destination plugins may use different permission nodes, command names, storage formats or configuration keys. Exporting a file from the old server does not make it valid for the new API.
- Validate behavior. Test player identities, permissions, worlds, portals, commands, scheduled tasks, inventories and any modded content that matters to your community.
- Measure the real workload. Use the same view distance, player activity and content when comparing stability or resource use.
- Plan rollback. Announce a maintenance window, retain the original backup and define the exact point at which you will return to the old server.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely decision point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A required plugin refuses to load | API or version mismatch | Confirm whether it targets Bukkit, Spigot, Paper or SpongeAPI, then verify its Minecraft build and dependencies. |
| A Sponge plugin is being considered for Paper | Different ecosystems | Find a supported Paper/Bukkit equivalent; do not assume the Sponge plugin can be copied into Paper’s plugin directory. |
| A Forge mod is required on a Paper plan | Wrong implementation | Re-evaluate SpongeForge or another Forge-capable deployment; Paper is not the Forge path described by Sponge’s implementation guide. |
| Players cannot see modded content | Client-side requirement | Check whether the mod adds blocks, textures or mobs that require client modifications. Sponge alone cannot supply those client assets. |
| Performance differs after migration | Workload or configuration changed | Compare the same Minecraft version, world, view distance, player load, content and hardware before drawing a conclusion. |
| The server starts but behavior is wrong | Configuration or data conversion | Review permissions, command mappings, world data and plugin configuration; a successful boot is not proof of a complete migration. |
A practical decision rule
Choose Paper if your non-negotiable features are Bukkit/Spigot/Paper plugins and you want Paper’s documented performance work. Choose SpongeForge if Forge mods are non-negotiable and Sponge plugins fill the server-side feature gaps. Choose SpongeVanilla if SpongeAPI plugins are required but Forge is not. If none of those constraints decides the matter, stage both implementations on the same workload and select the one with complete support, predictable administration and acceptable measured behavior.
