Set up a CS2 rotation by defining a map group in game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txt, selecting it with mapgroup <groupname>, and setting the first map separately. The startup map determines what loads first; the selected map group determines what can follow. This is the current CS2 approach, rather than copying older CS:GO-only cfg/mapgroup_<name>.cfg or retail mapcycle.txt instructions.

What a CS2 map cycle does
A map cycle is the server’s ordered pool of maps. Steam Support defines it as: “Map Cycle: Specifies the maps you wish to play and the order in which they appear.” The cycle is separate from the initial map. You can start on one map and still rotate through a different group after the round, time, or win-limit conditions are met.

In CS2, the durable configuration is a map-group block in game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txt. The server must then be told which group is active with mapgroup <groupname>. A hosting panel may expose the same setting as Map Group.
Before editing the server
Confirm the installation and build
Locate the dedicated-server installation and verify that the game/csgo/ directory contains the current gamemodes_server.txt. CS2 file conventions and panel labels can change with updates, so compare the file’s existing KeyValues layout with documentation for the exact server build you run.

Make a backup
Stop the server, copy gamemodes_server.txt to a dated backup, and edit the copy only after preserving the original structure. A malformed brace, duplicate key, or misplaced block can prevent settings from loading. Keep a second backup whenever you change the map pool.
Inventory every map
Write down the exact names of the maps installed on the server. A map can be valid on your client and still be unavailable to the dedicated server. Custom maps must be installed in the server’s dedicated-server directory before they can be included in a cycle.
Configure a map cycle step by step

Choose the first map
Set the startup map in the launch command or in your provider’s startup-map field. Many environments expose a command such as
+map <mapname>, but use the syntax documented for your server build or panel. This choice controls only the map loaded at startup or restart; it does not select the rotation. -
Create a map-group block
Open
game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txtand add your group inside the file’s existing map-group section. Preserve the current KeyValues nesting and spelling. The group needs a unique name and a maps collection whose keys are the exact server-side map names."mapgroups"

If your build uses different surrounding keys, copy the current file’s pattern and change only the group name and map entries. Do not add a second top-level structure simply because an older tutorial shows one.

Select the group
After the server starts, open its console and issue
mapgroup mg_evening, replacing the name with yours. A provider panel normally performs the same action when you select a value in Map Group. Set the group before loading the first map so the server has an active rotation when the session begins.The Tool Desk

Load the initial map
Use the startup-map setting, or load a map from the console after selecting the group. The direct command is
map <mapname>;changelevel <mapname>is also useful when changing an already running server. Loading a map manually does not prove that the cycle is selected, so check the active group separately. -
Set the mode and limits
Configure the game mode and the round, time, or maximum-win limits that should trigger progression. Valve’s game-mode model uses
game_typeandgame_mode, along with related settings, to determine how the next map is initialized. Keep those values consistent with the maps and rules you intend to run; otherwise a map can load with unexpected rules even when the rotation itself is correct. -
Save, restart, and verify
Save the file, restart the server if your panel requires a restart to reload configuration, and inspect the console. Confirm that the intended group is active, then test every entry with a direct
maporchangelevelcommand. Fix a missing installation or spelling error before investigating vote or rotation behavior.
How to verify that the cycle actually works
- Check the active group: the console or panel should show the group you selected, not merely the map that is currently running.
- Check every name: compare each map key in the group with the filename or map identifier available to the dedicated server. Differences in spelling, underscores, or custom prefixes can cause a skip.
- Check direct loading: run
map <name>for each entry. If one fails here, rotation cannot use it. - Check progression conditions: verify that the configured round, time, or maximum-win limit can actually be reached in the selected mode.
- Check after restart: restart the server and confirm that both the map group and the startup map persist. A working manual console command is not necessarily a persistent configuration.
Self-managed files versus a hosting-panel workflow
Both methods ultimately select a CS2 map group, but they differ in where you maintain it and how much of the process is visible.

Choose direct file management when you need precise control or run several custom groups. A panel is practical when you want repeatable restarts and do not want to edit KeyValues manually. In either case, verify the resulting active group rather than assuming a saved dropdown changed the server.
Local or custom maps versus Workshop maps
Installed local and custom maps
A local or custom map must be present in the dedicated-server directory before it can participate in a cycle. Install it server-side, restart or reload as required by the installation method, and test it with a direct map command. Only after it loads successfully should you add its exact name to the selected group.
Workshop maps
Workshop content has an additional availability step. Current hosting workflows use host_workshop_map <numeric_id> for a single map or host_workshop_collection <numeric_id> for a collection. Some providers also offer an add-on manager that keeps several Workshop IDs available. The server must download or otherwise make the content available before the map name can be used in a group.
After installation, use the map’s usable server-side name in the selected group, or use the provider’s collection workflow if it manages the rotation for you. Test again after a full restart: a Workshop map that was available during one session may be absent when the server starts without the required startup or collection configuration.

Choosing the right rotation design
Fixed, curated rotation
A small group containing only the maps you want to play is easiest to audit. It reduces accidental selections and makes a failed entry obvious. The trade-off is that you must edit the file whenever you want to add or remove a map.

Broader group with voting or administration
A larger group gives players or administrators more choice and lets voting or an administrative change determine the next map. It also increases the number of installed maps to maintain and makes spelling or availability errors more likely. Test every entry before opening the server to players.
Separate groups for separate modes
Use distinct groups when the map pool or rules differ by mode. Keep the mode settings aligned with the group you select; game_type, game_mode, and related values affect how the next map is initialized. Changing only the map group can leave the next map running under the previous mode’s rules.

An old CS:GO guide does not match the server
Some older instructions depend on cfg/mapgroup_<groupname>.cfg or the retail mapcycle.txt workflow. Current CS2 hosting documentation warns that those files may not exist or may not be the supported primary method. Recheck the server build, use the existing gamemodes_server.txt map-group structure, and select it with mapgroup <groupname>.
The map loads manually but never rotates
This usually means the map is valid but the group is not active. Issue mapgroup <groupname>, confirm the console reports that group, and then load the initial map. Do not treat a successful map command as proof that the rotation was selected.
The console reports “map not found” or skips an entry
Install the map on the dedicated server and compare the exact name in the group with the name accepted by a direct map command. Correct spelling, capitalization where relevant, directory placement, and any custom prefix. Once direct loading succeeds, reload the group and test progression again.
A Workshop map disappears after restart
Configure the appropriate Workshop startup command or collection/add-on workflow and wait for the server to download the content before selecting it. Then restart and verify availability with a direct map load. A collection ID alone is not evidence that every map is installed and usable in the selected group.
The next map has the wrong rules
Inspect game_type, game_mode, and related server settings. Valve’s game-mode configuration determines how the next map is initialized, so a correct map group can still produce an unexpected ruleset when those values do not match.
Changes vanish after a panel restart
Determine whether the panel regenerates gamemodes_server.txt or applies its own saved Map Group value at startup. Make the change in the panel’s persistent setting, or edit the generated file only when the provider documents that workflow. Restart once more and verify the active group from the console.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep a dated backup of
gamemodes_server.txtbefore every edit. - Record the group name, map names, mode values, and startup map in your server notes.
- After a CS2 update, inspect the file’s current KeyValues shape before merging your group.
- Direct-load newly added or Workshop maps before putting them into a live rotation.
- Restart periodically to confirm that the group, Workshop content, and initial map survive a cold start.
- When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time: installation, group selection, map loading, then mode and limits.
Final setup pattern
The reliable sequence is: install and test every map on the server; define a named group in game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txt; select it with mapgroup <groupname> or the panel’s Map Group control; set the initial map separately; configure mode and progression limits; and verify the result after a restart. This separates map availability, rotation selection, and game rules, making failures much easier to diagnose than an all-in-one legacy configuration.
