Third-party controllers can be a good fit for Switch 2, but compatibility is model- and connection-specific. Before buying, confirm the exact model and firmware with its manufacturer, then check that the features you need—such as console wake, remapping, motion control, vibration, audio, or amiibo support—actually work in the mode you plan to use.
Start with the exact model and connection mode
Look up the controller’s exact model and variant on the manufacturer’s current Switch 2 compatibility and support pages. Do not rely on a brand name, a family name, or a listing that says only “Switch compatible.” Nintendo’s own guidance identifies specific accessories and capabilities; it does not promise blanket compatibility for third-party gamepads. Compatibility may differ by connection method. Check whether the manufacturer supports Bluetooth, a wireless USB receiver, wired USB, or some combination, and whether a particular mode requires a firmware update. A controller working wirelessly does not automatically mean that its wired or receiver-based mode works the same way.
Check the features you actually need
Basic input support is not proof that every advertised or expected function is available on Switch 2. Verify each capability on the exact model’s support page or manual:

- Wake: Can the controller wake the console from sleep, or must you turn the console on another way?
- Remapping and extra buttons: Can you change button assignments on Switch 2 itself, through the controller, or only in the maker’s software? Check whether rear paddles or other additional buttons are recognized as inputs.
- Motion control and vibration: Confirm whether each is supported, and whether support depends on connection mode or firmware.
- Audio: Check whether a headphone jack or headset feature works with Switch 2, rather than assuming that a port on the controller guarantees console audio.
- NFC and amiibo: Look for explicit confirmation of NFC or amiibo support. Do not infer it from basic controller compatibility.

For comparison, Nintendo says its Switch 2 Pro Controller has a C Button for opening the GameChat menu, mappable GL/GR buttons, and an audio jack for headphones and headsets. Confirm firmware, charging, and setup
Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before ordering. Check any required firmware version, how updates are installed, and whether the update process needs a computer, phone, or companion app. Also confirm how the controller charges and whether it can be used while charging.

Nintendo provides a useful example of why connection details matter: the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2 and can charge through the dock with a USB cable. Evaluate a product example without generalizing
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller is one specific model to investigate. 8BitDo describes Switch compatibility, button customization, stick and trigger sensitivity adjustment, vibration control, and Ultimate Software V2 support. Its support material also includes Switch 2-related controller updates. These statements do not establish that every 8BitDo controller—or every connection mode and feature on this model—works identically with Switch 2. Check who handles problems and what you can return
Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance directs users with third-party controller issues to the controller’s manufacturer. Before purchase, check that maker’s current support page, firmware history, warranty terms, and contact options. Use this checklist to compare candidates
- Exact model and variant explicitly listed as compatible with Switch 2
- Supported connection mode or modes, including any mode-specific limits
- Required firmware and a practical way to update it
- Wake behavior and any setup steps
- Remapping options and support for extra buttons
- Motion control, vibration, audio, and NFC/amiibo support, checked separately
- Charging method and battery arrangement
- Manufacturer support and warranty terms
- Current retailer return terms and price
Prices and stock change, and current retailer terms must be checked on the listing you intend to buy. If a manufacturer does not clearly document a feature you consider essential, treat that capability as unconfirmed rather than assuming it works.
