Before buying a remastered PS1 game, verify the exact edition and console, the games and extras included, what the developer changed, and whether practical features such as saves, languages and accessibility options meet your needs. “Remastered” is a label, not a complete specification.
Use the current official product page for your country and platform as the final authority. Listings can differ between regions and console generations, and a collection may contain different games or expansions than its title suggests.

1. Identify the exact release and platform
Start with the product page, not a trailer, box image or search result. Confirm the console versions named in the listing and the edition you are about to purchase. A game sold for two PlayStation generations may not expose identical features on both.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the platform labels
- Confirm whether the listing is for PS4, PS5, or both.
- Read the compatibility section for the console on which you intend to play.
- Check whether the purchase grants one version, a cross-generation entitlement, or separate products.
- Look for a note that a feature available on PS4 may be absent when the game is played on PS5.
For example, the PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered identifies PS4 and PS5 versions and warns that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5. That kind of note is more useful than assuming that “PS5” automatically means every feature from the PS4 release is present.

Confirm regional and account requirements
Open the store page for your own country while signed in to the account that will use the purchase. Voice languages, screen-text languages, age ratings, taxes, refund terms and edition names can vary by region. If you are buying a code or a disc from another market, verify that it can be redeemed and played with your account before paying.
2. Read the included-content list line by line
Collections often use a single name for several separate games, expansions and bonus features. Do not infer the contents from the number in the title or from the original release history.
Separate the base games from expansions
The U.S. PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered explicitly names:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Tomb Raider I plus Unfinished Business
- Tomb Raider II plus Golden Mask
- Tomb Raider III plus The Lost Artifact
That is the level of detail to look for in any collection. An expansion, challenge level or bonus chapter may be listed separately from the main campaign. Check whether the item is included in the edition you selected, rather than assuming that every add-on associated with the original game is present.
Check for omitted versions or modes
Compare the listing with the exact original release you remember. Regional versions, bonus discs, multiplayer modes and downloadable chapters may have different rights or may not be part of a remaster. If the product page does not name a particular game, expansion or mode, treat it as absent until the publisher confirms otherwise.
3. Find out what “remastered” actually changed
The word can cover anything from a light compatibility release to a substantial visual and interface update. Look for a feature description from the developer or publisher that states what changed. Do not infer a resolution, frame rate or other technical specification unless the product materials actually provide it.
Graphics and presentation
Check whether the project changes character models, environments, lighting, textures, menus, aspect presentation or other visual elements. Also check whether the original presentation can be restored. An original-look option matters if you want the game as you remember it, while an enhanced mode may be preferable for a first playthrough.

- Tomb Raider I, II & III Remastered /PS5
In the PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered, the collection is described as having upgraded graphics with an option to switch back to the original polygon visuals. Aspyr’s product director Chris Bashaar explained that allowing players to toggle to the original look and feel was a critical feature. That is a title-specific design choice, not a standard feature of all remasters.
Performance claims and audio
Search the listing and developer explanation for explicit statements about performance modes, animation, loading behavior, music, sound effects and voice work. If those details are not stated, do not assume that a remaster runs at a particular frame rate or includes a newly recorded soundtrack. “Enhanced” marketing language does not substitute for a specification.
Preservation versus alteration
Some teams describe using original source code or the original engine to preserve how a game behaves. Aspyr says it used the original source code and engine for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered and sought to preserve the original gameplay while adding features. Treat that as the developer’s description of this collection. Another remaster may rebuild systems, rebalance levels or change timing, so read that project’s own explanation.
4. Check the control schemes and gameplay changes
PS1-era games often have control assumptions that feel unfamiliar on a modern controller. A remaster may preserve them, replace them, or let you choose between old and new approaches.

Look for a selectable control style
Determine whether the listing or developer documentation names:
- the original control scheme;
- an alternate modern scheme;
- an option to switch schemes in the menu; and
- any gameplay changes tied to the new controls.
For Tomb Raider I–III Remastered, Aspyr says the original tank-style controls remain available as a menu option and that modern controls were added. The company describes preserving the original gameplay while adding graphical changes, photo mode and other features. If you prefer the historical feel, make sure the original scheme is selectable rather than merely reproduced in a limited mode.
Ask whether convenience features alter the challenge
Photo mode, quick actions, hints, camera changes or other conveniences can affect how a game feels. Decide whether you want a faithful replay or a more approachable first experience, then verify which options can be disabled. A remaster that preserves the original levels may still change how easily you can navigate or recover from mistakes.

5. Verify saves, pausing and offline behavior
Practical features can determine whether a remaster fits your routine. Read the current listing for the exact save and pause behavior instead of relying on how the PS1 original worked.

- Are saves manual, automatic, or both?
- Where can you create a manual save?
- Can you pause while playing offline?
- Does the game require an online connection or account sign-in after installation?
- Are saves shared between the PS4 and PS5 versions, if both are included?
The PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered identifies manual save points and the ability to pause while offline. Those details are useful evidence for that collection; they should not be generalized to every remastered PS1 title.
6. Inspect languages and accessibility options
Language and accessibility support is often listed in separate fields, so scroll beyond the marketing description.
Language support
Check voice languages and screen-text or subtitle languages independently. A listing may support several text languages but fewer dubbed voices. Confirm the language options for your region and the edition shown in your cart.
Accessibility information
Look for documented options such as subtitle controls, display adjustments, control remapping, camera settings, difficulty assistance and audio controls. Do not assume that a modern release has a particular accessibility feature because another game from the same publisher does. The PlayStation page for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered includes accessibility information and voice and screen-language details; use the same fields when evaluating another title.
7. Compare editions on the features that matter
If a game is sold in more than one edition or as separate versions for different consoles, compare the products directly. The useful comparison is functional, not just the name or artwork.
| Comparison area | What to verify | Example from Tomb Raider I–III Remastered |
|---|---|---|
| Included content | Games, expansions and bonus material named in the package | Tomb Raider I with Unfinished Business; Tomb Raider II with Golden Mask; Tomb Raider III with The Lost Artifact |
| Graphics | Enhancements and whether the original presentation can be restored | Upgraded graphics with a toggle to original polygon visuals |
| Controls | Original scheme, modern scheme and how you switch between them | Original tank-style controls remain available; modern controls are added |
| Console compatibility | Supported console versions and feature caveats | PS4 and PS5 are listed; some PS4 features may be absent on PS5 |
| Practical features | Saves, pausing, accessibility and languages | Manual save points, offline pausing, accessibility details, and voice and screen-language information are listed |

8. Confirm the format and seller before paying
Decide whether you want a digital purchase, a physical copy or whichever format is currently legitimate in your region. Verify the seller, platform, included content and return terms on the actual checkout listing.
Digital purchases
- Confirm the product is sold for your console generation.
- Check the account region and currency.
- Read the platform’s refund conditions before downloading.
- Make sure the edition name in the cart matches the edition you researched.
Physical purchases
- Confirm that the disc or cartridge is an official release for your region and console.
- Check whether the package includes a download code, required update or separate bonus content.
- Verify that the seller’s description matches the exact edition, not a similarly named standard release.
Do not treat an old listing, a marketplace photograph or a reseller’s shorthand as proof of current contents. Product pages and terms can change, so recheck them immediately before purchase.
9. Understand why availability can change
Older PSone games can be difficult to republish because rights and licenses were often written for the original product and did not anticipate a later release on another platform. The PlayStation Store team has explained that a rerelease may require investigating expired licenses, ownership of publishing rights and permission from a publisher that may no longer exist.
This context explains why a game can disappear, return in a different form or be unavailable in one country without proving anything about a particular title’s future. It is not a prediction that the collection you are considering will be delisted. It is a reason to verify the current, legitimate listing and keep your purchase records.

Run this checklist for every remastered PS1 game, even when you already know the original.
- Open the official regional product page. Use the page for your country and intended console.
- Record the exact edition name. Note whether it is a single game, collection, deluxe edition or cross-generation product.
- Confirm platform compatibility. Read all PS4, PS5 or other console caveats, including missing-feature warnings.
- Inventory the contents. Write down each included game, expansion, level and bonus item.
- List the visual changes. Check enhanced presentation, original-look toggles and any stated performance or audio changes.
- Check controls. Confirm whether original and modern schemes exist and how they are selected.
- Check your practical requirements. Verify saves, offline pausing, languages, accessibility and any player-count or online requirements.
- Match the format to your needs. Confirm digital or physical availability, seller legitimacy and return terms.
- Recheck volatile details at checkout. Price, stock, format and regional terms must be current.
11. Worked example: reading the Tomb Raider I–III Remastered listing
This collection demonstrates why a buyer should inspect the individual listing rather than rely on the word “remastered.” The page identifies the PS4 and PS5 versions, names all three games and their associated expansions, describes upgraded graphics and an original-polygon toggle, and lists manual saves, offline pausing, accessibility information and language support. It also carries a PS5 compatibility caveat.
Aspyr’s Chris Bashaar, director of product, adds useful context: the team used the original source code and engine, aimed to preserve the original gameplay, retained tank-style controls as a toggle and added modern controls. The same explanation mentions graphical changes, photo mode and other features. Bashaar reported “over 200 trophies” for this collection; that figure belongs to this title and is not a normal count for remasters generally.

These details let a buyer make a specific decision: someone wanting the original control feel can keep it, while someone seeking a more contemporary scheme can use the modern option. Someone sensitive to visual authenticity can switch back to polygon visuals. Someone buying for a particular console can account for the PS4-to-PS5 feature caveat. That is the level of evidence to seek for any other remastered PS1 game.
12. Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every version is identical
Fix this by reading the compatibility notes for your console, not just the headline platform.
Buying a collection without checking its contents
Fix this by making a written list of every game and expansion named on the product page and comparing it with what you expect.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Interpreting “remastered” as a guaranteed technical specification
Fix this by looking for explicit statements about graphics, performance, audio and presentation toggles. If a number is not published, do not invent one.
Expecting modern controls to replace the original controls
Fix this by checking whether both schemes are available and whether switching is done from an in-game menu.
Ignoring languages or accessibility until after purchase
Fix this by opening the listing’s language and accessibility fields before adding the game to your cart.
Treating old availability as permanent
Fix this by using a current legitimate listing and recognizing that licensing and publishing rights can affect rereleases.
When should you skip the purchase?
Pause the purchase if the listing does not identify your platform, omits the games or expansions you expected, lacks the control or accessibility options you require, or leaves a compatibility warning unresolved. Also stop if the seller cannot establish the edition and format. Waiting for a clearer official description is safer than buying on the strength of a familiar title alone.
A remaster is a good fit when its documented contents, presentation choices, controls and practical features match the way you intend to play. Make that decision from the current regional listing and the developer’s specific feature explanation—not from the label by itself.
