Samsung’s current US support guidance identifies most translation functions and Gallery Edit Suggestions as on-device examples. It lists auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-corrections and image editing as cloud-based examples. Other tools, including Generative Edit, can combine both approaches: basic processing may happen on the phone, while more demanding work is sent to Samsung’s cloud.
The exact behavior depends on your Galaxy model, software version, region and the feature’s current implementation. Samsung provides a Process data only on device control under Galaxy AI, but enabling it can remove or limit functions that require remote processing.

What “on-device” and “cloud” mean in Galaxy AI
An on-device feature runs its AI model on the phone or tablet’s own processor. Your input does not need to leave the device for that operation, and an internet connection may not be required. A cloud feature sends at least part of the request to remote servers. That normally means a network connection, and some functions also require you to be signed in to a Samsung Account.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A phone may perform a basic operation locally, then request cloud assistance when an edit, language task or generation is too computationally intensive. “Works offline” therefore does not always mean that every mode, language or result is processed locally in every circumstance.

Galaxy AI features Samsung identifies as on-device
Translation and conversation tools
Samsung’s current US support FAQ names translation as an on-device example and says most translation functions are handled locally. Samsung’s product descriptions also identify Live Translate and Interpreter as on-device examples. Depending on the phone and language pack, this can include translating a call or an in-person conversation without sending the spoken input to a remote service.
Samsung’s detailed S24-series table, published by Samsung UK and updated April 29, 2024, marked Interpreter, Live Translate, chat translation, Samsung Internet translation and Notes translation as offline-capable. That table applies to the S24 generation and its software at that time; it is useful evidence of how those devices worked, not a universal promise for every Galaxy phone sold today.
Gallery Edit Suggestions
Gallery Edit Suggestions is another prominent on-device example in Samsung’s current US guidance. The phone analyzes a photo and proposes adjustments such as cropping or other improvements. The exact suggestions and eligibility can change with the model and software build.
Time/Weather Ambient Wallpapers and Photo Ambient Wallpaper
Samsung’s US FAQ lists Time/Weather Ambient Wallpapers among on-device examples. Samsung’s S24-era UK table called the related Photo Ambient Wallpaper feature offline-capable. Availability and naming can differ by One UI release, so check the feature list on your own device.

Selected Google Messages functions
Samsung’s US support FAQ specifically names Magic Compose, message suggestions and rewrite suggestions in Google Messages as on-device examples. “Selected” matters: it does not classify every writing feature in every messaging application as local processing.
Audio Eraser
Samsung separately describes Audio Eraser as an on-device Galaxy AI capability. It can reduce unwanted sounds in compatible video clips. Whether the option appears, and which clips it accepts, depends on the phone and software version.

Galaxy AI features Samsung identifies as cloud-based
Formatting, summaries and corrections
Samsung’s current US support guidance gives auto-formatting, auto-summarizing and auto-corrections as cloud-based examples. These functions can process notes, text or other content on remote servers, so they generally need connectivity. Turning on Samsung’s device-only setting can make them unavailable.
Image editing
The same FAQ lists image editing as cloud-based. This category is broader than Gallery Edit Suggestions: an image-editing command that generates or substantially changes content can invoke remote processing even though a simpler suggestion feature runs locally.
Generative Wallpaper and other generation features
Samsung’s S24-era UK table marked Generative Wallpaper as online-only. That is a model-generation-specific entry, not a guarantee that every later phone uses exactly the same processing path. Generated images, text or wallpapers are particularly likely to have network or account requirements, so read the notices shown in the feature before using it.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Generative Edit is a hybrid case
Generative Edit should not be placed in a simple “on-device” or “cloud-only” box. Samsung says the feature has on-device capability but can use cloud processing for more intensive edits. Samsung’s Newsroom documentation also states that Generative Edit requires a network connection and Samsung Account login. In practical terms, a compatible phone may perform some analysis locally while relying on Samsung’s servers to create or reconstruct complex parts of an image.
Recommended Free Tools
If you enable Process data only on device, Generative Edit may lose functions or stop working, even if the application still displays an editing interface. Treat the toggle as a restriction on cloud assistance, not as a guarantee that every Generative Edit mode will remain available offline.

What the older S24 table tells you—and what it does not
Samsung UK’s April 29, 2024 S24 table provides a more granular snapshot. It marked Transcript Assist as offline-capable, along with Interpreter, Live Translate, chat translation, Notes translation, Samsung Internet translation and Photo Ambient Wallpaper. It marked Style and Grammar as available both offline and online, with an on-device setting caveat.
The same table listed Notes auto-formatting, spelling correction, cover generation and summaries, Voice Recorder summaries, Samsung Internet summaries, Generative Edit and Generative Wallpaper as online-only for that S24 software. Those labels describe the S24 implementation covered by that page. Samsung warns that Galaxy AI behavior varies by device and software version, so do not use this older matrix as a substitute for the settings and help text on a newer Galaxy model.

- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap Galaxy AI. On some devices the wording or location may differ because of One UI and model differences.
- Turn on Process data only on device.
- Open each Galaxy AI feature you use and read its notice. Features that require remote servers may be disabled, lose advanced modes or ask you to reconnect if you switch the setting back.
Samsung says some Galaxy AI tools require internet access and account sign-in. Therefore, the device-only switch is not a promise that the entire Galaxy AI suite will continue to function offline; it is a way to prevent cloud processing where Samsung supports that restriction.
Privacy: what Samsung says about remote processing
Samsung says its approach combines on-device and cloud AI and that Live Translate and Interpreter inputs remain within the phone. For features that use remote servers, Samsung states that personal data is not stored long-term or used to train its AI models. That is Samsung’s published policy statement, not an independently verified guarantee or a measurement of what happens in every regional service configuration.
Samsung summarizes its approach with the sentence: “Since launching Galaxy AI, our vision has been driven by a commitment to openness and user choice.” In practice, user choice is expressed through feature-level notices, account and network requirements, and the Process data only on device setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Languages, models and regions change the answer
Language counts describe availability, not where processing happens. Samsung’s US overview, stated as of July 2026, lists 22 languages for Call Assist (including Live Translate), Note Assist, Interpreter and Transcript Assist. The same overview lists 41 languages for Photo Assist, Creative Studio and Writing Assist; 16 for Now Nudge; and 13 for Now Brief. Call Screening is listed separately at 13 languages.
A language being supported does not prove that a feature is local, cloud-based or available on your particular model. Samsung’s counts are feature-specific and can differ by country, software version and account configuration. Downloaded language packs, network access and Samsung Account status can each affect what appears in the interface.

How to check your own phone before relying on offline AI
Confirm the software and model
Install the latest available system and Galaxy AI updates, then note the exact model number and region. Samsung’s compatibility caveat is important: two phones with similar names can expose different tools or processing options.
Read the feature’s notice
Open the specific tool rather than inferring behavior from its marketing category. Look for “requires an internet connection,” “sign in to Samsung Account” or an on-device processing explanation. A feature can contain both local and online modes.
Test with connectivity disabled
After saving anything important, enable airplane mode and try the function with the device-only setting enabled. If the feature disappears, refuses the request or removes an advanced option, that is evidence of a network dependency on your configuration—not proof that every phone behaves identically.

Check after major One UI updates
Processing assignments can change as Samsung adds models, languages or server-backed capabilities. Recheck the Galaxy AI menu after a major software update instead of relying on an old S24-era list.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming “Galaxy AI” is one processing system: each tool can have a different architecture.
- Equating offline-capable with permanently local: a feature may work offline for one language or mode but use the cloud for another.
- Treating Generative Edit as fully local: Samsung explicitly describes cloud assistance for intensive edits and requires a network and Samsung Account.
- Expecting the device-only switch to preserve every function: cloud-dependent summaries, corrections or edits can be limited.
- Using language totals as privacy evidence: a language count says nothing about where the model runs.
- Applying an old S24 table to a new phone: use the current device’s software and Samsung support information.
Bottom line for choosing a setting
Choose device-only processing when keeping inputs on the phone matters more than access to cloud-dependent summaries, corrections and advanced edits. Leave cloud processing available when you need those capabilities and accept Samsung’s stated remote-processing policy. For either choice, verify the exact feature, model, software version, region and language: Galaxy AI is a collection of tools with different requirements, not a single on/off processing mode.
