There is no single best HDR preset for every Linux Kodi system. For a supported HDR chain, turn Adjust display HDR mode on when Kodi should switch the screen to match HDR video. Leave it off when you want to keep the screen’s current mode and let Kodi tone-map. Configure menu brightness separately: start with Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance, then use GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode only when the menus, OSD, subtitles or graphics still look wrong.
The short answer: use these conditional settings
HDR output and Kodi’s interface brightness are separate problems. A setting that produces correct HDR video does not automatically make SDR-origin menus readable, and hardware-decoding options do not switch a display into HDR.

| What you want | Kodi setting | Starting choice | When to choose the alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch the display for HDR titles | Player > Videos > Adjust display HDR mode | On | Choose Off if the desktop or display must remain in its current HDR/SDR mode and Kodi should tone-map. |
| Keep SDR-origin menus visible during HDR | System > Display > Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance | Enabled | Disable it and tune GUI peak luminance manually if the system balance makes the interface too dim or bright. |
| Set interface luminance manually | System > Display > GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode | Tune against the actual screen | Use only when automatic/system balance is not suitable; Kodi does not specify one universal number. |
| Match output refresh to video | Player display option > Adjust display refresh rate | On start/stop | Keep a fixed rate if mode changes cause problems. Kodi marks Always as not recommended. |
| Decode video efficiently | Player > Videos > hardware decoding options | VAAPI or VDPAU according to GPU, driver and codec | Change the API only when your hardware and Kodi build support the other path. |
| Prevent gray blacks or crushed shadows | Video/output range | Match Kodi, GPU and display | Use limited range for a regular HDMI television without PC/full-range mode; full range is generally appropriate for a PC monitor. |
These are starting decisions, not a calibration recipe. Kodi exposes the controls only when the connected platform and display report the required capabilities.

Confirm that your Linux Kodi build can expose HDR
Do this check before changing picture controls. Kodi can hide the display HDR section when the display, GPU, driver, output path, compositor or Kodi backend does not provide a complete HDR-capable chain.

Check the installed Kodi version
Kodi’s Linux downloads page listed Kodi 21.3 Omega as the recommended build on October 13, 2026. Kodi 22 Piers Alpha 1 announced Linux HDR passthrough on OpenGL and support for the Wayland Color Management protocol with compatible compositors. That announcement describes a prerelease, not a guarantee that a distribution’s stable package contains the same code.
- Open Kodi’s system information and note the version and build type.
- Check your distribution package version; a repository build may differ from Kodi’s download.
- Identify whether Kodi is running through X11, Wayland or another backend, and which compositor is active.
- Confirm that the display connected to the active output actually supports HDR.
Do not follow Kodi 22 Wayland instructions blindly on a Kodi 21 package or assume every Wayland compositor implements the color-management interfaces Kodi expects.
Check the physical and software signal path
The relevant path is Kodi to its graphics API, GPU driver, display server/compositor, connector and display. A capable television cannot compensate for a backend or driver that never exposes HDR metadata or an HDR scan-out mode. Conversely, a working desktop HDR toggle does not prove that Kodi’s video renderer can use it.
Choose how Kodi handles HDR video
Turn on display switching when Kodi should follow the title
Go to Player > Videos and set Adjust display HDR mode to On. With a supported chain, Kodi can switch the display into the mode appropriate for HDR media when playback starts. This is the clearest choice for a system where the television or monitor should move between SDR and HDR automatically.
Turn it off when the screen mode is intentionally fixed
Set Adjust display HDR mode to Off if you deliberately keep the display in its current HDR/SDR mode. Kodi then applies tone mapping as needed rather than asking the display to change modes. This can be preferable when desktop mode switching is unreliable, disruptive or controlled outside Kodi.

Neither option is universally superior. The decision depends on whether your complete Linux display stack switches modes correctly and whether you prefer display-side HDR presentation or Kodi’s tone-mapped output.
What to look for after changing the option
- Start an HDR title and observe whether the display reports an HDR mode.
- Check a bright highlight and a dark scene for clipping or gray blacks.
- Stop playback and verify that the display returns to the intended desktop mode.
- If no mode change occurs, confirm that the setting is visible, the display is detected as HDR-capable and your Kodi backend supports the feature.
Make Kodi menus readable during HDR playback
Kodi’s interface elements—menus, OSD controls, subtitles and graphics—originate in SDR even while the video is HDR. Configure their treatment in System > Display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with system HDR/SDR balance
Enable Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance. This lets the operating system’s balance control determine how SDR-origin Kodi elements are shown during HDR output. It is the recommended first test because it follows the display environment rather than assuming a fixed luminance value.
Use manual GUI peak luminance when needed
If the menus are still too dim or too bright, disable the system-balance option and adjust GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode. Judge the result with the actual viewing distance, room lighting and display brightness you use for Kodi. Kodi’s documentation does not define one ideal peak-luminance number, so a value copied from another television or monitor is not a universal calibration.
Change this control while viewing a menu, OSD overlay or subtitle—not only the HDR film. The control targets SDR-origin graphics, so changing it will not replace proper HDR mastering or fix a video that is itself clipped.

Match refresh rate without creating new playback problems
Use On start/stop for frame-rate matching
In Kodi’s display playback options, set Adjust display refresh rate to On start/stop when your hardware and display support the required modes. Kodi switches the output when playback begins and ends so the refresh rate can match the video’s frame rate. A brief blank screen during the switch is normal.
Use Kodi’s display whitelist if a resolution or refresh mode is missing. The available choices depend on the connected screen and hardware; do not add a mode that the display cannot accept.
Why Always is a poor default
Kodi marks Always as not recommended. It can cause more frequent mode changes than a home-theater setup needs, increasing blanking or handshake problems without improving every title.
Do not confuse refresh matching with sync playback
Sync playback to display is a separate feature. It changes playback speed to keep video synchronized with the display and can disable audio passthrough when audio correction is required. Use it only when you accept that trade-off; it is not an HDR switch and does not replace refresh-rate selection.
Select hardware decoding independently of HDR
Linux Kodi exposes VAAPI and VDPAU hardware-decoding paths. They determine how supported codecs are decoded, not whether the display enters HDR.

VAAPI
Kodi’s Linux guidance describes VAAPI as mainly intended for Intel and, in some circumstances, AMD hardware. Its Linux page recommends VAAPI for everything other than older AMD cards and NVIDIA. That is a compatibility direction, not a guarantee for every GPU generation, driver or distribution package.
VDPAU
VDPAU is mainly associated with NVIDIA and some AMD hardware. Select it only when the GPU driver, codec and Kodi build expose the required VDPAU implementation.
Verify before blaming HDR
- Confirm the GPU model and active driver.
- Check that the codec in the problem file is supported by the selected API.
- Test a known file at the target resolution and frame rate.
- If decoding fails or stutters, switch to the API recommended for that GPU rather than changing HDR brightness controls.
A system can have correct HDR signaling and still stutter because the decoder path is unsupported. The reverse is also true: smooth hardware decoding does not prove that HDR metadata or display mode switching works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set color range and bit depth consistently
Choose a range that matches the display
Kodi describes limited range, 16–235, as suitable for a regular HDMI television that is not configured for PC/full-range operation. For a PC monitor, full range is generally appropriate. The Kodi range, GPU output range and display input range must agree.
A mismatch commonly produces gray-looking blacks, crushed shadow detail or an image that appears unnaturally dark. Change one end of the chain at a time and recheck a scene containing both near-black detail and bright highlights.
Best Value
Understand the HDR bit-depth exception
Kodi states that HDR passthrough uses 10-bit output regardless of the separate SDR 10-bit output preference. Do not interpret an SDR bit-depth menu as a way to force or disable HDR passthrough.
A complete setup procedure
- Record the software path. Note the Kodi version, package source, graphics API and whether the session uses X11 or Wayland.
- Confirm display capability. Make sure the connected screen and active output path expose HDR, not merely that the panel is advertised as HDR-capable.
- Open the HDR playback control. Go to Player > Videos > Adjust display HDR mode. Choose On for automatic display switching or Off for a fixed display mode with Kodi tone mapping.
- Configure interface brightness. In System > Display, enable Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance. Open an HDR title and inspect menus, subtitles and the OSD.
- Adjust manually only if necessary. Disable system balance and tune GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode if the SDR-origin interface remains visibly wrong.
- Set frame-rate behavior. Choose Adjust display refresh rate: On start/stop if mode switching is reliable and you want the output rate to follow the video. Avoid Always.
- Choose decoding. Select VAAPI or VDPAU according to the GPU, driver and codec support. Test playback before changing additional settings.
- Align range. Match limited/full range across Kodi, the GPU and the display. Check dark detail and gradients.
- Retest both transitions. Start and stop several SDR and HDR titles, watching for mode-switch failures, blanking, stutter, gray blacks and unreadable menus.
Troubleshoot missing controls and poor results
The HDR settings are not visible
Kodi hides display HDR controls when the full chain does not report support. Check the connected HDR display, GPU/output path, driver, compositor and Kodi build first. A missing menu is usually a capability-detection issue, not a hidden “best” value.
Kodi does not switch the display for an HDR title
Verify Adjust display HDR mode, then confirm that your backend and build implement HDR output and that the display is connected through the path Kodi is using. Kodi’s control is platform-dependent; a desktop HDR toggle alone is not sufficient evidence.

Menus are dim while HDR video looks correct
Adjust Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance or, with it disabled, GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode. These controls target GUI-originated SDR elements, including subtitles and OSD graphics.
The screen blanks or playback stutters during mode changes
Use On start/stop rather than Always, and confirm that the requested resolution and refresh rate are supported by the display. If switching remains unstable, keep a fixed display mode and use the tone-mapping path instead.
Hardware decoding is slow or fails
Check the GPU, driver, codec and Kodi package against the VAAPI or VDPAU path you selected. The general Linux recommendations do not guarantee compatibility with every hardware generation or distribution build.
Blacks are gray or shadow detail disappears
Compare the range setting at all three points: Kodi, GPU and display. Use limited range for a standard HDMI television without PC/full-range mode, and generally full range for a PC monitor.

Practical profiles for common Linux Kodi systems
Living-room television with reliable mode switching
- Adjust display HDR mode: On.
- Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance: Enabled initially.
- Adjust display refresh rate: On start/stop.
- Video range: Limited when the television is using its normal HDMI range.
- Hardware decoding: choose the API supported by the installed GPU and driver.
PC monitor with a fixed HDR desktop mode
- Adjust display HDR mode: Off if the desktop must remain in its current mode.
- Use system HDR/SDR brightness balance first; switch to manual GUI peak luminance if menus do not match the monitor.
- Use full range when the monitor and GPU are configured for PC/full-range output.
- Enable refresh-rate switching only if the monitor handles the transitions cleanly.
Wayland system testing Kodi 22 features
- Confirm that the installed package is a Kodi 22 Piers build rather than Kodi 21.3 Omega.
- Use a compositor compatible with the Wayland Color Management protocol implementation described in Kodi’s prerelease announcement.
- Treat the feature as version- and compositor-dependent; do not assume every Wayland session supports it.
What to remember
- HDR display switching and HDR GUI brightness are independent controls.
- The connected display chain, backend and compositor determine whether those controls appear and work.
- Kodi 21.3 Omega was the recommended Linux download on October 13, 2026; Kodi 22 Piers HDR-on-OpenGL and Wayland work was announced for a prerelease.
- Refresh-rate switching is optional, hardware-dependent and may briefly blank the display.
- VAAPI and VDPAU affect decoding performance, not HDR mode selection.
- Matching color range prevents gray blacks and crushed detail.
