A remaster is worth buying only when the specific release solves your specific problem at a price you accept. Before you pay, confirm six things: the exact platform and edition, whether your existing copy qualifies for an upgrade, what content the purchase includes, whether your saves and achievements transfer, whether your hardware supports the new version, and the live price in your region. “Remastered” is not a standard package. One game may include every expansion and offer a free upgrade, while another may sell a new edition with different rules for discs, accounts, saves or regions.
1. Confirm the exact game, platform and edition
Start on the official store or support page for the release you intend to buy. Search for the complete title, not just the word “remastered.” Check the console generation, PC storefront and edition name shown on the page. A remaster can exist on PS5 and PC but not on PS4, or on several current consoles with different purchase and upgrade rules.

Match the listing to the hardware you will use
- On console, confirm whether the listing is for the current-generation version, an older-generation version, or a bundle containing both.
- On PC, confirm the storefront and operating-system requirements. A purchase on one PC storefront may not grant ownership on another.
- For a physical copy, check whether the package contains a disc for the version you need or merely a code for a different edition.
- Read the edition name and content description all the way through. Deluxe, launch, complete and standard editions can carry different bonuses even when they share the same remaster branding.
Official listings illustrate the variation. PlayStation lists Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for PS5 and PC. CD PROJEKT RED documents The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered across specified current platforms. KONAMI’s official page for Suikoden I&II HD Remaster lists a broad selection of console and PC storefronts. Those examples show why a title name alone is not enough: availability is release-specific.
Record the exact version before comparing prices
Write down the platform, edition and whether you are buying physical or digital. Keep that information beside the store page while you check upgrades and prices. It prevents a common mistake: comparing the cost of a digital complete edition with the cost of an upgrade that applies only to a particular physical or digital edition.

2. Check whether your existing copy earns an upgrade
If you already own the original, do not assume the remaster is automatically free or discounted. Find the upgrade terms for the exact edition and platform in your library. The offer may require a particular disc, a matching account region, a console with a disc drive, or ownership of a named edition.
Disc owners need to check the console drive
PlayStation states that PS4 disc owners of Horizon Zero Dawn cannot use that upgrade offer on a disc-free PS5 Digital Edition. Insomniac gives the same practical warning for the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade of Marvel’s Spider-Man: a disc copy requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The disc is used to verify ownership, so a digital-only console cannot perform that check.
Before buying a console download or an upgrade, answer these questions:

- Does the upgrade page name your edition, not merely the base game?
- Will the console you own read the required disc?
- Does the disc’s country or region match the PlayStation Network account used for the purchase?
Insomniac’s guidance identifies the country-matching condition for the disc and PSN account. Treat that as a title-specific rule, not as a universal PlayStation policy.
Free upgrades still have boundaries
CD PROJEKT RED describes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered as a free upgrade for specified existing owners and platforms, with regional exceptions. “Free upgrade” therefore does not mean every owner in every country receives every version. Open the support FAQ for your platform and region, then check what appears in your account before deleting or selling the original.

Compare upgrade cost with a new purchase
Some stores show an upgrade entitlement only after you sign in. Others display a separate product page. Compare the final amount you would pay, including any edition you need to purchase to obtain expansions, with the price of the complete remaster. If the new edition costs only slightly more and includes content you do not own, buying it may be simpler; if your eligible upgrade is free or low-cost, rebuying the game may waste money.
3. Verify exactly what the edition includes
The label “remastered” describes a presentation or technical update, not a guaranteed content bundle. Inspect the product description for the base game, expansions, downloadable content, bonus missions, soundtracks and cosmetic items. Distinguish content that is included in the purchase from content that is merely compatible with it.
Use the edition details, not the cover art
CD PROJEKT RED says the remastered Witcher 3 package includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and its FAQ says those expansions are included with the update on specified platforms. That is a useful example, not a template for every remaster. PlayStation’s listing for The Last of Us Part II Remastered presents an upgrade offer and local-store pricing context, but the terms are tied to that particular release. Check the edition you are actually buying rather than assuming another game uses the same bundle.

Look for missing or changed content
Read the exclusions as carefully as the inclusions. A remaster can alter licensing, multiplayer availability, language support or bonus items. The supplied official product pages establish that edition and upgrade content vary by release; they do not support a general promise that every earlier add-on will appear. If a store description does not name an expansion or bonus, do not count it as part of the purchase.
4. Confirm save and achievement transfer separately
Save compatibility and achievement carryover are different questions. A game may accept an old save while changing progression systems, or it may allow achievements to carry over only after a particular import process. Find a title-specific support article that explains the transfer path.

Check the transfer method
- Identify where the original save is stored: local console storage, cloud storage or a PC save folder.
- Read whether the remaster imports automatically, requires an in-game menu, or needs an upload from the original version.
- Confirm that the save comes from the same platform family and account where required.
- Keep the original installation and a backup of the save until the remaster loads it successfully.
Insomniac says a save can be transferred from Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. KONAMI’s Suikoden I&II HD Remaster information includes save-conversion conditions, so owners should read those conditions rather than assume a one-click import.

CD PROJEKT RED says existing Witcher 3 saves are compatible with the remastered version, but skills reset because the skill system was overhauled. The same FAQ says achievements carry over. This is an important distinction: a successful import may preserve your world and story position while requiring you to rebuild a changed character system. Read the patch or FAQ notes for gameplay changes before treating “save compatible” as “nothing changes.”
Protect your original progress
Do not overwrite your only original save during the first import. Make a manual backup where the platform permits it, or leave the old game installed until you have opened the remaster, checked your inventory and progression, and confirmed that the expected achievements appear. If the publisher describes a one-way conversion, make the backup before starting it.
5. Check hardware requirements and feature support
A remaster can demand more storage, graphics capability or a newer console than the original. On PC, compare the official minimum and recommended requirements with the computer you actually own, not with a planned upgrade. Confirm the operating system, processor, graphics card, memory and storage requirements listed for the remaster.
Separate “runs” from “supports every feature”
A PC may launch a game while lacking the hardware for its highest-resolution mode, upscaling option or frame-generation feature. PlayStation’s PC information for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered describes ultrawide resolutions and named upscaling and frame-generation technologies. Treat those as feature checks: verify that your monitor, graphics hardware and driver support the options you want, rather than assuming every PC receives identical image quality.

Console checks
- Confirm the supported console generation on the product page.
- For a physical upgrade, verify that the console has the disc drive required by the ownership check.
- Check free storage before downloading a large remaster, especially if you plan to keep the original installed for save protection.
- Look for platform-specific performance modes or feature limitations in the official description.
Do not infer console performance from a PC feature list. The platform listing is the authority for the version you will play.

Use the store page for your country and platform on the day you intend to buy. Prices, taxes, upgrade offers and regional exceptions can differ. Compare the final price of the complete edition with the upgrade price shown after signing in, then subtract only content you are certain you already own and can use with that edition.
Calculate the real cost for your situation
- Open the local listing while signed into the account that owns the original.
- Record the displayed upgrade price, including any required edition purchase.
- Record the price of the full remaster and list every expansion or bonus it includes.
- Add any physical shipping cost or storage purchase that is necessary for your chosen format.
- Choose the option that delivers the content and platform access you need, not the option with the lowest headline number.
The official pages for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered and The Last of Us Part II Remastered demonstrate that upgrade offers exist, but they do not establish one universal price for every game, region or platform. A price shown in another country, on another storefront or before signing in is not your price.
Build a one-page buying comparison
When several editions or platforms are available, put the facts in one place before checkout. This prevents an attractive discount from hiding a missing expansion or an unusable upgrade.

Keep a screenshot or note of the terms if the store presents a limited-time upgrade. The purpose is not to preserve a promotional price indefinitely; it is to make clear which entitlement you purchased and which content it covered.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every owner gets the same upgrade
Upgrade eligibility can depend on title, platform, edition, disc status and region. Read the publisher’s support page for your exact combination. Do not use another game’s free-upgrade policy as evidence for the game you are considering.
Buying a disc upgrade for a disc-free console
Check the console hardware before checkout. If the entitlement requires a physical disc, a digital-only console cannot validate it, even if the account owns other games digitally.
Counting an expansion that is not named
Open the edition’s content list and look for the expansion by name. “Includes the remastered game” does not prove that earlier downloadable content is bundled.

Confusing save import with unchanged progression
Read the gameplay-change notes. The Witcher 3 example shows that a compatible save can still receive a skill reset after a system overhaul.
Using a price from the wrong region
Check the store while signed into the purchasing account and set to the country where the transaction will occur. Regional exceptions and local pricing context are part of the offer.
A practical go/no-go decision
Buy now when the product page matches your platform and edition, your ownership route is confirmed, the included content covers what you want, the save plan is acceptable, your hardware supports the desired features, and the local total is better than the alternatives. Pause when any one of those items is unresolved—especially disc eligibility, region restrictions or save conversion. Those are entitlement and progress risks that a later discount may not fix.
If you are a new buyer, concentrate on edition contents, platform support, technical requirements and local price. If you already own the original, spend most of your checking time on upgrade eligibility and save behavior; those determine whether the remaster is an inexpensive enhancement or a second full purchase.
