There is no verified, current universal winner. “Chrome Lite” was Chrome’s Lite mode, a data-saving feature, not a separate lightweight Chrome browser. The only reliable way to know which browser uses less storage is to compare current versions on the same phone, separating download size, installed app size, and data or cache accumulated during browsing. Google’s current Chrome help lists Android 10 and later as the requirement, while available official sources do not provide an apples-to-apples storage benchmark for Chrome and its alternatives.
The direct answer: measure the phone you actually use
Search results often treat “Chrome Lite” as though it were a small edition of Chrome. That creates a false comparison. Google used Lite mode for a Chrome feature that reduced data use and could load optimized versions of pages; it was not a separately installed browser. The Chromium announcement describing the name change is from April 2019, so it should not be read as a current app-size specification. Chromium’s announcement of Lite mode explains the feature, not a second Chrome package.

For a meaningful storage decision, first define what “storage” means. A browser can have a small download but a larger installed footprint, or a modest app installation that accumulates substantial cache, downloads, and site data after a few weeks. Google Play documentation explicitly distinguishes download size from install size and reports those figures for a reference device and configuration. Google’s Play Console size guidance is why one number copied from a listing cannot represent every phone.

What “Chrome Lite” actually referred to
Lite mode was a Chrome feature
Google introduced the name “Lite mode” for the former Data Saver feature in 2019. Its purpose was to reduce data consumption and sometimes request an optimized page version. That changes how pages are delivered; it does not establish that the Chrome application occupies less space on disk. A data-saving setting and an app-footprint measurement are different claims.
Do not look for a separate current Chrome Lite download
Because Lite mode was not a distinct browser package, there is no official “Chrome Lite” installation size to place beside Chrome’s. If a download page presents an old or unofficial lightweight Chrome file, it is not evidence of a supported Google release. Use the browser listing supplied for your own device and verify the installed package through Android’s app settings.
Three storage numbers you must keep separate
Download size
Download size is the amount transferred when the store delivers a particular release to a particular device configuration. It can vary with Android version, processor architecture, screen density, language resources, and the store’s split-delivery choices. It tells you about the download, not the final disk space after installation.

Installed app size
Installed size is the space occupied by the application and its installed components after Android finishes installing it. This is the figure most people mean when they ask how large a browser is, but it still depends on the release and device configuration. A store page may show a different value from Android Settings because the two measurements are made at different stages and under different configurations.

User data, cache, and downloads
After browsing, a browser may hold cached images, page resources, downloaded files, offline content, cookies, history, and other site data. Android normally presents the application footprint separately from user data and cache in the browser’s storage screen. The growth of those categories is often more relevant to a phone that has been used for months than the initial download.
A privacy feature, ad blocker, or data-saving option should not be treated as proof of a smaller installed app. Those features may change browsing behavior, but only a measurement of app size and data on the same phone can establish their storage effect.
What the official evidence says about the main choices
| Browser or option | Compatibility or status established by the cited source | Storage evidence available |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome for Android | Google’s current help page says Android 10 and later | No comparable current app-size figure supplied |
| Google Go | Updated version is available only for Android Go users; legacy versions on devices with less than 2 GB RAM receive no future updates | Google said “just over 7MB” in an August 20, 2019 announcement; this is historical and not a current installed-size measurement |
| Firefox Lite | Support ended June 30, 2021; version 2.6.1 was the last supported release | No current supported-size comparison; the browser no longer receives security updates |
| DuckDuckGo Private Browser | Current Android alternative; official distribution routes include Google Play, F-Droid, and APK | No comparable app-size figure in the cited help page |
| Other choice-screen browsers | The Android choice-screen page lists browsers such as Brave, Firefox, Opera, and Samsung Internet in many countries; availability varies by country | The list does not rank storage use |
The table deliberately does not turn unlike measurements into a ranking. Google Play’s documentation explains why download and install values are configuration-specific, and the official browser pages above do not publish a common test on one handset.

How each named alternative fits the storage question
Chrome
Chrome remains the reference point for this comparison, but its current compatibility requirement matters before storage does. Google’s Chrome download help says Chrome for Android works on Android 10 and up. That statement establishes compatibility, not a number of megabytes. If your phone runs an older Android release, a smaller alternative may still be unusable or unsupported; check the operating-system requirement first.

Google Go
Google’s August 20, 2019 announcement described Google Go as “At just over 7MB.” That is a publisher statement made at that date, not an independent test and not the current installed size. The figure cannot be compared directly with today’s Chrome listing, because the releases, delivery configurations, and measurement definitions may differ. Read the original announcement in context at Google’s 2019 Google Go post.
Availability has also changed. Google’s current help page says the updated Google Go is only available for Android Go users; legacy versions on devices with less than 2 GB of RAM receive no future updates. Its incognito mode redirects to Chrome, so it should not automatically be treated as a complete, independent replacement for every private-browsing task. Confirm both availability and behavior on your device using Google’s current Google Go help.
Firefox Lite
Firefox Lite is not a current secure recommendation. Mozilla says support ended on June 30, 2021, and identifies version 2.6.1 as the last supported release. An old APK might occupy little space, but its lack of security updates outweighs any historical size advantage. Mozilla directs users toward supported Firefox for Android and Firefox Focus; the cited page does not provide comparable current storage measurements for those apps. See Mozilla’s end-of-support notice.
DuckDuckGo Private Browser
DuckDuckGo documents its Android browser as a free, privacy-focused alternative and lists Google Play, F-Droid, and APK distribution routes. That confirms a current alternative, but the help page does not state a size that can be compared fairly with Chrome. Use its official installation guidance at DuckDuckGo’s Android help page, then measure the installed app and its data on your own handset.

Browsers shown by Android’s choice screen
Android’s official choice-screen page lists multiple browser options, including Brave, Firefox, Opera, and Samsung Internet in many listed countries. Country availability can differ, and the page is a selection list rather than a storage benchmark. It is useful for finding alternatives available in your market, not for identifying the smallest package. The list is at Android’s browser choice-screen page.
A fair, repeatable storage comparison
If you want a defensible answer for one phone, use the following procedure. Record every condition so the result cannot be mistaken for a universal ranking.
- Choose the metric. Decide whether you are comparing download size, installed app size, or growth in user data and cache. If storage pressure is the problem, measure all three separately.
- List the exact candidates. Write down the browser name, release shown by the store, and whether it is available for your Android version. Do not substitute an old APK for a current store release.
- Record the store listing. On the same phone, note the download or listing size shown for each browser. Label it with the date and device because store delivery is configuration-specific.
- Install without importing old data. Start from a comparable state. If a browser was previously used, its existing cache and downloads will distort the initial reading.
- Check Android’s storage screen. Open Settings > Apps > [browser] > Storage. Record the separate values Android shows for the app, user data, and cache. Manufacturer skins may word the labels differently, so preserve the labels displayed on your phone.
- Use an identical workload. Open the same short set of pages in each browser, perform the same searches, download the same file if downloads are part of your real use, and apply comparable settings. Do not browse for hours in one browser and only minutes in another.
- Measure growth. Return to the same storage screen after the workload and record how much app data and cache changed. Keep the phone, Android version, browser versions, pages, downloads, and elapsed time in your notes.
- Repeat if the result is close. Cache eviction and background updates can change a reading. A second run helps show whether a small difference is stable or simply timing.
This procedure produces a device-specific result. It does not turn one phone’s figures into a claim about every Android model, country, or future release.
How to read the result without being misled
A smaller download may not mean a smaller installation
Stores can deliver only the resources a device needs, while an installation may unpack or generate additional files. Therefore, rank download size and installed size separately. If one browser downloads less but installs to more space, both statements can be true.

A small initial footprint can grow during normal use
Measure user data and cache after the same workload. A browser that starts small but stores more page resources, downloads, or site data may consume more space over time. Conversely, a larger initial app may show little growth during your normal use. Your workload determines which behavior matters.
Do not mix releases or phones
A figure from a 2019 announcement, an APK mirror, or another reviewer’s handset is not an apples-to-apples comparison with the current Chrome listing on your phone. Version, processor architecture, Android release, language, and store configuration all affect the number. Cite the release and device whenever you publish your own measurements.
Support and compatibility can outweigh a few megabytes
Storage is only one decision axis. A browser that fits but no longer receives security updates is a poor choice for everyday web use. Firefox Lite’s June 30, 2021 end-of-support date illustrates the risk: an old small app is not a supported lightweight solution. Google Go’s Android Go restriction is another compatibility boundary. Check maintenance status and operating-system requirements before optimizing for a marginal storage difference.

Common mistakes and the correction for each
- Searching for “Chrome Lite APK.” Lite mode was a Chrome feature, not a separate supported Chrome browser. Use official store listings instead of unverified packages.
- Quoting Google Go’s 7 MB as a current winner. The “just over 7MB” wording dates to August 20, 2019. Label it as a historical Google statement, not a current installed-size test.
- Comparing download size with Android’s app-size field. They measure different stages. Record each under its own heading.
- Ignoring cache and user data. A browser’s footprint after weeks of browsing can differ substantially from its first-install reading. Measure the growth your use creates.
- Recommending Firefox Lite because it is old and small. Mozilla ended support in 2021. Lack of security updates makes it unsuitable for current secure browsing.
- Assuming every choice-screen browser is available everywhere. Android states that browser availability varies by country. Check the listing shown in your market.
- Using a privacy or data-saving feature as a storage proxy. Feature behavior and installed footprint are separate questions. Verify storage in Settings.
A simple decision framework
- Android 10 or newer and no special constraint: compare the current browsers offered for your phone, then choose using measured app size, data growth, support, and the features you need.
- Android Go device: check whether Google Go is offered to your device and understand that its updated availability is limited to Android Go users. Measure it rather than relying on the 2019 figure.
- Older Android version: discard browsers that do not support that version before comparing storage. A theoretically small package that cannot update is not a practical option.
- Phone nearly full after browsing: inspect each browser’s user-data and cache values in Settings. The accumulated data, not the download, may be the actionable source of growth.
- Need a supported replacement for Firefox Lite: use a currently maintained browser such as Firefox for Android or Firefox Focus, then perform the same device-level measurement; no cited source establishes which has the smallest current footprint.
What can honestly be concluded today
Chrome Lite does not supply a hidden small version of Chrome to compare. Google Go has a memorable “just over 7MB” claim, but it belongs to a 2019 announcement and cannot be used as a current installed-size comparison. Firefox Lite is retired and unsupported. DuckDuckGo and the browsers shown on Android’s choice screen provide current alternatives, yet their official pages do not publish a common storage benchmark against Chrome.
Consequently, the accurate answer to “Which Android browser uses less storage?” is: the available evidence does not identify one universal current winner. Measure current releases on the same device, separate download, installed app, and post-use data, and include Android compatibility and support in the decision. That method gives you an answer for your phone without turning an old marketing figure or an unrelated APK size into a false promise.
