Ocean Outlast is a Forge expert modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2. The project’s listed V79A release (dated October 9, 2024) has a matching V79A server pack, so the safest setup is to install that exact client and server generation together. Allocate 7 GB of memory as a starting point, use the supplied server files, and require every player to run the same release and Forge profile.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
This guide explains what the pack contains, how to install it through CurseForge, how to start a private or public server, how to avoid version and handshake errors, and what the license permits you to redistribute.

What Ocean Outlast is
Ocean Outlast is an expert-style Minecraft progression pack created by KevskyBoy. It takes the idea of a Skyblock progression experience and places it in a huge ocean world with randomly generated islands. Instead of following a short list of objectives, you work through interconnected technology, magic, exploration, quests and dungeon systems.
The project describes more than 1,900 quests. They are not merely optional achievements: the quest book is intended to guide progression and teach the mechanics introduced by the pack. That makes Ocean Outlast better suited to players who want a structured long-term challenge than to someone looking for a lightweight collection of decorative mods.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
The pack contains roughly 300 mods, including components added for performance improvements and fixes. The large mod count explains why launch time, memory allocation and exact version matching matter more than they do in a small vanilla-plus pack.
Ocean Outlast versions and the files you need
The project metadata lists V79A as the current release in the reviewed file index. It targets Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. A separate server archive is listed for the same V79A generation.

| File or release | Minecraft and loader | Date shown in the project files | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean Outlast V79A | Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge | October 9, 2024 | Client modpack installed in the launcher |
| Ocean Outlast V79A Server Pack | Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge | October 9, 2024 | Dedicated-server files for the V79A client |
| Ocean Outlast Server V.67 | Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge | September 11, 2023 | Older server generation; the indexed ZIP is named OceanOutlastServer67.zip and is 354.47 MB |
Do not combine the V.67 server with V79A clients, or use a V79A client against the older server, simply because both target Minecraft 1.12.2. The Minecraft version alone is not enough to establish compatibility; the pack release, mod list and configuration must also agree.
Memory, hardware and software expectations
KevskyBoy’s project metadata recommends allocating 7 GB of RAM to Ocean Outlast. The same note says the pack can run with 5 GB, but random lag spikes may occur. Treat 7 GB as a starting allocation, not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate or tick rate: render distance, Java settings, other applications and the number of players on a server all change the real requirement.

| Use case | Starting point | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player client | 7 GB allocated to the pack | Keep enough memory available for the operating system and background applications; watch for spikes during world generation and dimension changes. |
| Lower-memory experiment | 5 GB may launch | The author warns of random lag spikes, so this is a troubleshooting option rather than the preferred setting. |
| Dedicated server | Begin around the same 7 GB scale, then adjust for the intended player count | Observe tick time, garbage-collection pauses and peak usage while several players explore new terrain. |
The sources do not specify a required Java distribution or a pack-specific JVM flag set. Use the Java and Forge files supplied by the server archive, and do not paste startup arguments from an unrelated modpack. If the launcher or server reports a Java compatibility error, confirm the Java version expected by your Forge installation rather than guessing at flags.
Install the client with CurseForge
CurseForge is the documented distribution route. Install the desktop app first, then use its built-in modpack browser rather than assembling the approximately 300 mods by hand.
- Open the CurseForge app and select the Minecraft section.
- Use Browse or Discover to search for Ocean Outlast.
- Open the project entry and select Install. Let the app download the pack and create its profile.
- Open My Modpacks, select Ocean Outlast, and check that the profile is the 1.12.2 Forge profile rather than a different Minecraft instance.
- Launch once without changing the mod list. The first run can take longer while Forge builds caches and the pack creates its configuration files.
- At the title screen, open the quest book and create a test world. Confirm that the pack reaches a playable world before attempting server configuration.
Keep the profile’s release label visible in the launcher. When a new file appears in the project index, do not update only the client if you intend to connect to an existing server; the server archive must be upgraded in a coordinated change.
Build a V79A server
A dedicated server should be built from the matching V79A Server Pack, not from a random Forge installer plus a copied client folder. The indexed sources confirm that the server archive exists, but they do not publish the exact startup-script names or pack-specific Java flags. Those details are inside the downloaded archive and can change between releases.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Prepare a clean server directory
- Install the Ocean Outlast V79A client profile and confirm that it launches. This gives you a known-good client for testing later.
- Download the Ocean Outlast V79A Server Pack from the project’s files page. Check the release label before downloading so you do not accidentally select the older V.67 archive.
- Create a new, empty directory dedicated to this server. Do not unpack the archive over another modpack or over an existing Ocean Outlast generation.
- Extract every file from the server ZIP into that directory, preserving the folder structure supplied by the author.
Complete the first run
- Open the archive’s supplied Forge/server startup file. The exact filename is release-specific; use the one present in the V79A archive instead of copying a command from another guide.
- Start the server once and wait for the normal first-run files to appear. A Forge server commonly stops until its EULA has been accepted; follow the prompt and set the EULA value as instructed by the file it creates.
- Start the server again with the supplied launcher. Watch the console for a message that the server has finished loading before connecting.
- Stop the server cleanly from the console. Avoid killing the process during world saves, especially during the first world creation.
Configure the instance
- Edit the generated server properties file for the port, difficulty, view distance and other settings appropriate to your group. Change one setting at a time while testing.
- Set a whitelist if the server is private. Grant operator or other permissions only to accounts that need administrative access.
- Choose a predictable world directory and include it in your backup plan. Keep backups outside the live server folder so a failed update cannot overwrite every copy.
- Start the server again and connect from the same computer or local network before exposing the port to the public internet.
- Only after a local connection succeeds should you configure router forwarding, firewall rules or a public DNS name. Restrict the forwarded port to the server machine and keep the operating system patched.
Allocate memory for the intended player count rather than assuming that a successful solo launch proves the server is adequately provisioned. Have several players travel in different directions during testing; generating new ocean islands is more demanding than standing together in an already-loaded base.
Make clients and server match
Every connecting player should use the same Ocean Outlast release, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge profile as the server. A player who has the right Minecraft version but a different pack release can still trigger missing-mod, registry or handshake errors.

| Pack release | Client and server must be from the same release generation, such as V79A | CurseForge profile label and the server archive name |
| Minecraft version | Both sides use 1.12.2 | Launcher profile and Forge/server console |
| Loader | Both sides use the compatible Forge profile supplied for the pack | Profile details and server startup files |

Give new players the release name and installation method, not just a server address. Asking them to install “1.12.2 mods” leaves too much room for a different build, a missing dependency or a changed configuration.
World generation and unsupported additions
The author identifies the world type as Default. A newly created world may therefore look like a conventional large island rather than a compact Skyblock platform. That appearance alone does not show that generation failed. Allow the world to finish loading, inspect the quest book and test several new chunks before deleting it.

The project does not support adding extra mods. Unapproved additions can change registries, recipes, world generation or startup behavior. The author specifically notes removing VintageFix when using Essentials. Treat that as a compatibility instruction for that combination, not as a general invitation to edit the pack.

Performance tuning that does not change the pack
Start with memory and workload
Set the client to the author’s 7 GB recommendation, then measure. If the game still stutters, note whether the problem occurs while loading new islands, entering a dungeon, opening a large base or simply looking at an existing scene. These patterns point to different causes. Lowering render distance and other view-related settings reduces the amount of terrain and tile-entity data the client must process without altering recipes or progression.
Separate client lag from server lag
A low frame rate with normal server responses is a client rendering problem. Delayed block updates, rubber-banding and players freezing while the frame rate remains high indicate server tick pressure or network latency. Test with one player near spawn and then with several players exploring separate areas. Record the player count and activity when evaluating a memory change.
Keep the installation reproducible
Do not “fix” a performance problem by deleting random mods, replacing libraries or copying configuration files from another pack. Such changes make later support and recovery harder. Save a backup of the original server directory before making configuration edits, and document each change so it can be reversed.

Common failures and their fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Missing-mod or handshake error when joining | The client and server are on different pack releases, Forge profiles or mod sets | Compare the release labels and Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge profile. Reinstall the exact client release instead of adding individual missing files. |
| Server starts but players cannot connect | The process is not fully loaded, the local address is wrong, or firewall/router rules are incomplete | Test locally first, wait for the ready message, then check the host address and firewall before changing public port forwarding. |
| Random client lag spikes | Memory allocation below the author’s recommendation, heavy rendering workload or background applications | Move toward the 7 GB starting point, close competing applications and lower render distance. Check whether spikes coincide with new-chunk generation. |
| World looks like a normal large island | Expectation that the pack must generate a small Skyblock platform | Remember that the documented world type is Default. Let generation complete and verify progression through the quest book. |
| Crash after installing an extra mod | Ocean Outlast does not support added mods, or the addition conflicts with an existing component | Remove the added mod and reproduce the issue on an untouched profile. Follow the project’s note about VintageFix and Essentials when relevant. |
| Server will not continue after first launch | The normal EULA first-run prompt has not been completed, or the supplied startup file was not used | Read the generated EULA and console files, accept the terms as required, and launch with the archive’s own Forge/server file. |
| Older guides reference files that are missing | The guide targets the V.67 server generation rather than V79A | Use the V79A Server Pack and its included scripts. Do not copy commands or folders from the older ZIP. |
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, backups, permissions and update timing. It also makes you responsible for memory sizing, firewall rules, operating-system maintenance and recovery after a crash. Managed hosting trades some control for a web panel, persistent storage and provider-side infrastructure.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You install and maintain Forge, the server pack, networking and backups. | The provider supplies the machine and panel; you still need to import or select the matching server pack. |
| Memory control | You can assign and change memory directly, subject to the machine’s capacity. | Choose a plan with enough available RAM for the pack and your player count; advertised limits vary by provider. |
| Backups and persistence | You design the schedule, storage location and restore process. | Panels may offer automated backups, but verify retention, restore access and whether backups include the full world and configuration. |
| Latency | Depends on your upload connection and the physical location of the machine. | Select a region close to the players and test latency before committing. |
| Pack support | You can inspect and modify the supplied files directly. | Confirm support for Forge 1.12.2 and the exact V79A Server Pack; a generic “modpack” checkbox is not proof of compatibility. |
| Cost and uptime | Uses hardware and bandwidth you already own, but you absorb outages and maintenance. | Prices, uptime guarantees and resource policies depend on the provider and are not established by the project’s file listings. |
One managed-hosting panel lists Ocean Outlast as a selectable pack, but that listing does not establish author endorsement, an affiliate relationship or support for every release. Ask the provider whether it accepts the supplied V79A server archive, exposes the required Forge controls and lets you download complete backups before purchasing.
License and redistribution
The Ocean Outlast license permits reuse of the pack’s configurations, scripts, exact mod list and quests. It does not permit reuse of custom assets such as quest icons, logos and backgrounds. A server operator can therefore share the permitted configuration material while leaving the author’s custom visual assets intact.
When publishing a server download or installation instructions, identify the exact release, preserve the license text and avoid bundling restricted artwork. If you are unsure whether a particular file is a custom asset or an allowed configuration component, seek clarification from the project maintainers instead of assuming that everything in the archive has the same redistribution rights.
Launch checklist
- Install Ocean Outlast through CurseForge and verify that the 1.12.2 Forge profile reaches the title screen.
- Download the server archive whose release label matches the client.
- Extract it into a clean directory and use the startup files included in that archive.
- Complete the first-run EULA prompt and perform a local connection test.
- Set memory based on the author’s recommendation and the measured player workload.
- Keep clients unmodified; remove unsupported additions before diagnosing a crash.
- Configure whitelist, permissions, firewall rules and backups before inviting players.
- Keep a copy of the original server files and document every configuration change.
For most groups, the reliable path is straightforward: install the V79A client profile, deploy the matching V79A Server Pack, allocate about 7 GB as a starting point, and keep every player on that same Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge release. The pack’s Default world type, large quest progression and unsupported-mod policy make consistency more valuable than ad-hoc customization.
