Minecraft Planks Guide: Every Wood Type, Crafting Recipe, Yield, and Best Source

A complete Minecraft planks guide covering all 11 log and stem families, Bamboo Planks and Bamboo Mosaic, four-for-one log recipes, bamboo's two-plank exception, source biomes, farming trade-offs, and edition notes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minecraft has 11 ordinary log- or stem-based plank families, plus Bamboo Planks and the decorative Bamboo Mosaic set. Put one matching overworld log, Nether stem, or pale-oak log into any crafting-grid slot and you receive four planks. Bamboo is the deliberate exception: one Block of Bamboo produces only two Bamboo Planks.

The practical choice is therefore not about strength. Ordinary plank families are functionally equivalent for the recipes that accept them; the meaningful differences are color and texture, the biome you must reach, how convenient the wood is to farm, and—especially for bamboo—the conversion yield.

What counts as a Minecraft plank type?

A “plank type” is a wood-family block used for building and for recipes such as slabs, stairs, fences, signs, doors, boats, and related pieces. The current Java-oriented set has 11 regular log or stem families:

  • Oak
  • Spruce
  • Birch
  • Jungle
  • Acacia
  • Dark Oak
  • Mangrove
  • Cherry
  • Pale Oak
  • Crimson
  • Warped

Bamboo adds a separate wood set. Its normal block is Bamboo Planks, and Bamboo Mosaic is a decorative variant made from bamboo slabs. Bamboo Mosaic should be treated as its own block for building purposes rather than as a universal replacement for every ordinary plank recipe.

The first six overworld families—oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, and dark oak—are described by Minecraft as visually different but functionally identical. Mangrove and cherry are later overworld additions, Pale Oak belongs to the Pale Garden woodset, and crimson and warped are Nether fungus-based sets rather than overworld trees.

Spruce Spruce Log Taiga and spruce-forest terrain 4 Spruce Planks per log Ordinary overworld family
Birch Birch Log Birch forests 4 Birch Planks per log Ordinary overworld family
Jungle Jungle Log Jungle biomes 4 Jungle Planks per log Ordinary overworld family
Acacia Acacia Log Acacia or savanna terrain 4 Acacia Planks per log Ordinary overworld family
Dark Oak Dark Oak Log Dark forests 4 Dark Oak Planks per log Ordinary overworld family
Mangrove Mangrove Log Mangrove swamps 4 Mangrove Planks per log Later overworld woodset
Cherry Cherry Log Cherry Grove terrain 4 Cherry Planks per log Added with the Trails & Tales-era overworld content
Pale Oak Pale Oak Log Pale Gardens 4 Pale Oak Planks per log Java Edition 1.21.4 woodset
Crimson Crimson Stem Crimson Forests in the Nether 4 Crimson Planks per stem Nether fungus woodset
Warped Warped Stem Warped Forests in the Nether 4 Warped Planks per stem Nether fungus woodset
Bamboo Block of Bamboo Bamboo jungles 2 Bamboo Planks per block Documented as a lower-yield woodset in the Bedrock Trails & Tales announcement
Bamboo Mosaic Bamboo Slabs Crafted from bamboo materials Decorative variant; not a log-to-plank conversion Do not assume it substitutes for every plank-family ingredient

A third-party recipe catalog also lists “poplar.” That name is catalog- or version-dependent and is not established here as a standard vanilla plank family. Check the exact edition and version before treating it as part of a normal survival-game list.

How to craft planks from logs and stems

Ordinary overworld logs

Oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, and Pale Oak all use the same conversion pattern.

  1. Open your 2×2 inventory crafting grid or a crafting table’s 3×3 grid.
  2. Place one log in any single slot. The log can be anywhere in the grid; no pattern is required.
  3. Take the four planks shown in the output slot.

The result keeps the input family: one Mangrove Log gives Mangrove Planks, not oak or a mixed bundle. The same four-for-one conversion applies to Pale Oak Logs in the Java Edition 1.21.4 Pale Garden woodset.

Crimson and warped stems

Nether wood uses stems instead of overworld tree logs, but the player action is the same. Put one Crimson Stem or Warped Stem into any crafting-grid slot and collect four planks of the matching Nether family. Do not confuse stems with stripped stems or unrelated Nether blocks when diagnosing a failed recipe; the input must be the appropriate stem item recognized by your edition.

Bamboo conversion

Bamboo follows a different recipe and yield:

  1. Collect enough bamboo to craft a Block of Bamboo.
  2. Open the inventory grid or a crafting table.
  3. Place one Block of Bamboo in any slot.
  4. Take the two Bamboo Planks from the output.

Minecraft’s Bedrock Trails & Tales announcement explicitly documents the two-plank result, compared with four planks from wood logs. That difference is intentional, so a two-item output is not a bug or a failed crafting attempt.

Bamboo Mosaic

Bamboo Mosaic is made from bamboo slabs rather than by converting a log or Block of Bamboo directly. It is a decorative bamboo variant with its own appearance. Keep ordinary Bamboo Planks and Bamboo Mosaic separate in storage, and verify the recipe’s exact ingredient before substituting one for the other.

How many planks do you get from one log?

For every ordinary log or stem family covered by the standard conversion, the answer is four. The input and output remain in the same family:

Input Output Yield
Oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, or Pale Oak Log Matching plank family 4 planks
Crimson Stem Crimson Planks 4 planks
Warped Stem Warped Planks 4 planks
Block of Bamboo Bamboo Planks 2 planks

Consequently, a stack of 64 ordinary logs converts to 256 planks, while a stack of 64 Blocks of Bamboo converts to 128 Bamboo Planks. Those totals describe the basic conversion only; they do not account for slabs, stripped variants, fuel, or blocks consumed by another recipe.

Where to find each wood type

Overworld forests and hills

  • Oak: Search forests and other ordinary oak-growing overworld areas. It is a practical general-purpose choice when you do not need a specialized color.
  • Birch: Look in birch forests. Birch’s pale, clean texture is useful for bright interiors and its trees are convenient to harvest in a uniform-height farm.
  • Spruce: Search taiga and spruce-forest terrain. Its darker brown tone suits cabins, roofs, beams, and underground builds.
  • Jungle: Search jungle biomes. Jungle wood supplies a warmer, richer color and is often selected for tropical or detailed builds.
  • Acacia: Search acacia or savanna terrain. Its orange tone is distinctive, and the tree can be arranged in a relatively space-efficient farm.

Specialized overworld biomes

  • Dark Oak: Find dark forests. Dark oak farms can be compact and high-yield, but the trees’ growth pattern makes planned planting and clearing important.
  • Mangrove: Travel to mangrove swamps. Mangrove is also notable for being plantable underwater, which can matter when a base has little dry land available.
  • Cherry: Search Cherry Grove terrain. Cherry’s distinctive texture is a strong visual reason to make the trip, although its growth can be less predictable for a tightly organized farm.
  • Pale Oak: Search Pale Gardens. Pale Oak belongs to the Pale Garden content introduced for Java Edition 1.21.4, so an older world or an edition without that content will not have it.
  • Bamboo: Search bamboo jungles. Bamboo is straightforward to farm, but its two-plank conversion means you need substantially more harvested material for a large plank project.

Nether sources

  • Crimson: Harvest Crimson Stems in Crimson Forests.
  • Warped: Harvest Warped Stems in Warped Forests.

Nether travel is the main acquisition cost for these two families. Once you have a sustainable stem supply, their conversion yield is the same four-for-one pattern as ordinary logs.

How to choose a plank type

No regular plank family is universally stronger for normal building. Select one using four practical tests.

1. Match color and texture to the build

Color is the most visible difference. Pale Oak, birch, and cherry support light palettes; spruce and dark oak provide deep brown contrast; acacia and jungle introduce warmer tones; mangrove, crimson, and warped create strongly themed palettes. When a structure uses multiple woods, compare the plank block itself, stairs, slabs, doors, and signs together because a color that looks good as a wall may clash in trim.

2. Minimize travel to the source biome

For an early base, nearby oak, birch, or spruce is often more valuable than a preferred color located thousands of blocks away. Dark oak, mangrove, cherry, bamboo, and Pale Oak each require a more specific search than the common forest families. Crimson and warped require a Nether expedition and safe return route.

3. Consider farm footprint and harvest effort

Birch is convenient when you want quick, uniform harvesting. Dark Oak and Pale Oak can produce a lot of material in a compact footprint. Acacia is space-efficient. Mangrove can be planted underwater. Cherry offers a unique appearance but less predictable growth. Bamboo is easy to grow, yet the lower conversion yield means more planting, harvesting, and storage for the same finished-plank total.

4. Check the conversion yield

For ordinary logs and stems, the yield is four planks each, so efficiency does not distinguish one family from another. Bamboo is the exception at two planks per Block of Bamboo. If a project needs thousands of blocks, calculate the required bamboo supply before committing to a bamboo-heavy palette.

Farming guidance by wood family

Fast, orderly farms

Birch is suited to a regular grid because the trees grow to a uniform height, making repeated planting and harvesting predictable. This reduces the amount of time spent climbing or searching through irregular canopies.

Compact, high-output farms

Dark Oak and Pale Oak are useful when land is limited and you want a compact, high-yield arrangement. Plan enough clearance to handle their growth shape, and leave a working path so you can reach every trunk without dismantling the farm.

Space-efficient acacia farms

Acacia is a practical compromise when you want a distinctive orange plank without dedicating a large area. Arrange saplings so the mature trees can be reached from a clear aisle; the goal is to reduce wasted horizontal space while keeping harvesting safe.

Water-based mangrove supply

Mangrove’s ability to be planted underwater lets you use shoreline or swamp space that would be awkward for other tree farms. Keep the planting area organized so roots and surrounding blocks do not obstruct access to the logs.

Cherry farms with visual payoff

Cherry is often chosen for its texture rather than maximum farming convenience. Because growth can be unpredictable, build wider access lanes and expect to spend more time clearing branches or locating every log in a mature tree.

Bamboo farms

Bamboo is easy to establish and harvest, making it attractive for automation or repeated manual collection. Its constraint is material throughput: two planks per Block of Bamboo means a bamboo build consumes twice as many converted source blocks as an ordinary four-for-one log build would for the same plank count. Reserve additional planting area and storage if bamboo is your primary structural material.

Recipe compatibility: what “wood recipes” really means

Many recipes use a generic plank ingredient, but compatibility is recipe-specific. A crafting-table example in a third-party recipe reference allows plank types to be mixed, yet that does not prove that every wooden item accepts every family or that Bamboo Mosaic can replace ordinary planks everywhere.

When a recipe does not appear, check these points:

  • Confirm that the item in your inventory is a plank, not a log, slab, stripped block, or Bamboo Mosaic.
  • Check whether the recipe requires a matching family, a generic plank tag, or a particular material such as bamboo.
  • Use the recipe book for your exact edition and version, because Java and Bedrock can differ in available content and labels.
  • Test one ordinary plank family first. If that works, try the desired family only when the recipe’s ingredient category permits substitution.

Edition and version cautions

Pale Oak availability

Pale Oak and the Pale Garden woodset are tied to Java Edition 1.21.4 in the supplied official material. A world running an earlier version, or an edition without the same update, may not show Pale Oak recipes or generation. State the edition and version when sharing a farm design or troubleshooting its absence.

Bamboo yield wording

The two-Bamboo-Planks-per-Block-of-Bamboo figure is documented in the official Bedrock Trails & Tales announcement. If you are comparing editions, verify the recipe in the version you actually play rather than assuming every historical snapshot or platform has identical behavior.

“Poplar” in recipe catalogs

If a website or modded recipe catalog shows poplar, treat it as source- or version-specific. It is not included in the standard vanilla list presented here without confirmation for the target edition.

Common mistakes and fixes

Expecting four planks from bamboo

There is no four-for-one bamboo conversion in the documented recipe. Use a Block of Bamboo and expect two Bamboo Planks; increase the farm’s output if the project is short on material.

Using the wrong input block

Logs, stems, stripped logs, slabs, and planks are different recipe ingredients. Place the raw family log or the appropriate Nether stem in the crafting grid for the four-plank conversion.

Looking for a biome by an imprecise name

Use the specific search terms “dark forest,” “bamboo jungle,” “mangrove swamp,” “Cherry Grove,” “Pale Garden,” “Crimson Forest,” and “Warped Forest.” Similar-sounding terrain does not guarantee the required wood family.

Assuming every decorative block is interchangeable

Bamboo Mosaic has its own recipe and appearance. Keep it separate from Bamboo Planks when planning recipes, counts, or storage labels.

Missing a newer woodset in an older world

Check the running version and edition before searching indefinitely. Pale Oak in particular depends on Java Edition 1.21.4-era content, while mangrove and cherry require the updates that introduced their biomes.

Planning a large build: a practical checklist

  1. Choose the visual palette first, including walls, trim, stairs, slabs, doors, and signs.
  2. Identify the nearest source biome for each selected family.
  3. Decide whether travel, Nether risk, or farm space is the limiting resource.
  4. For ordinary wood, multiply the desired plank count by one quarter to estimate the number of logs or stems needed.
  5. For bamboo, divide the desired plank count by two to estimate the number of Blocks of Bamboo, then allow extra supply for conversion and other bamboo recipes.
  6. Build the farm with access paths suited to the growth pattern: uniform rows for birch, compact but reachable layouts for dark oak and Pale Oak, underwater space for mangrove, and extra area for bamboo throughput.
  7. Store each family separately and label Bamboo Planks and Bamboo Mosaic as different materials.

Bottom line on Minecraft planks

Use any nearby ordinary log or Nether stem when efficiency is the priority: each produces four matching planks, and the standard families are functionally equivalent for recipes that accept them. Choose among oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, Pale Oak, crimson, and warped primarily for appearance, biome access, and farming convenience. Choose bamboo for its distinctive set and easy cultivation only after accounting for its fixed two-plank-per-Block-of-Bamboo yield.
