1. Verify the exact MacBook Pro configuration
Compare like with like. A lower price is not meaningful if the listing is for a different generation or has less memory or storage than the machine you need. Before ordering or meeting a private seller, ask for the model identifier or year, chip, display size, memory, storage, serial number, included charger, and a written condition description.

On the Mac, compare the stated details with the information shown in macOS, and match the serial number to the seller’s paperwork. Use Apple’s coverage lookup to check the device’s coverage record. Apple notes that recently submitted information or repairs may not appear immediately, so an unexpected result may need clarification. A serial lookup is not proof of physical condition or that the seller is authorized to sell the Mac.

2. Check battery health and cycle count together
Open System Settings > Battery and review Battery Health. “Service Recommended” means the battery holds less charge than when new or is not functioning normally, according to Apple’s battery service guidance. Ask whether replacement is included in the sale or would be an additional cost.
For cycle count, open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report > Hardware > Power. Apple explains that a cycle is based on using an amount equal to the battery’s full capacity, not necessarily on one discharge: “A charge cycle happens when you use all of the battery’s power – but that doesn’t necessarily mean in a single charge.” See Apple’s cycle-count guide for the limit associated with the exact model. Limits differ; Apple lists 1,000 cycles for many MacBook Pro models but lower limits for some older ones. Apple says batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity at their model’s maximum cycle count. Neither figure is a guarantee of the condition of an individual battery.

3. Review repair history, but interpret it carefully
On an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, check System Settings > General > About > Parts & Service. The panel appears only when macOS detects a repair; its absence does not prove that the Mac has never been repaired. If the panel appears, ask the seller to explain any listed status and provide repair invoices where available.
Depending on the model and repair, statuses may include Genuine, Unknown, Unverified, Used, or Finish Repair. Apple says “Genuine” indicates that genuine parts and processes were used. “Unknown” can mean a part is non-genuine, malfunctioning, unverified, modified, or cannot be verified; Apple also notes that an unknown part may affect trade-in value. 4. Make sure Activation Lock is removed
For an unsupervised Mac, Activation Lock is enabled when its user signs in with an Apple Account and turns on Find My, as described in Apple’s Platform Security guide. The previous owner must remove the Mac from their account and erase it. Do not pay for a machine that still asks for someone else’s Apple Account credentials.
For a private sale, ask the seller to erase the Mac and let you complete setup and activation before finalizing payment, if possible. If the seller cannot remove the lock or the Mac remains associated with another person, stop the transaction until it is resolved. A Mac formerly managed by an organization may require the seller to confirm that its management enrollment has been properly released; the available Apple guidance does not describe a universal buyer-side check for every management arrangement.

5. Inspect the Mac and included equipment
At an in-person inspection, or promptly during the return period for an online order, check the display, enclosure, hinge, ports, keyboard, trackpad, camera, speakers, microphone, wireless connection, and charger. Compare what is physically present with the listing and ask about damage or faults before accepting the device. Save the listing, serial number, invoice, condition statements, and the written warranty and return terms.
6. Compare the seller’s protections—not just the discount
Apple Certified Refurbished and third-party refurbished listings are not interchangeable promises. Apple says its Certified Refurbished products receive full functional testing, inspection and cleaning, and genuine replacement parts as needed. Apple also includes a standard one-year limited warranty with its Certified Refurbished products, according to its refurbishment information. Those terms apply to purchases through Apple’s Certified Refurbished channel, not automatically to a marketplace seller or independent refurbisher.

Apple advertises savings of up to 15% on Certified Refurbished products, but actual savings and available configurations vary over time; check the current Apple refurbished catalog for the specific machine. Do not infer a fair price from a discount percentage alone.
For any offer, compare the same generation and configuration, then check the delivered total, battery condition and likely service needs, written warranty duration and provider, return period, return-shipping responsibility, inspection standard, repair and parts disclosures, and included accessories. Get third-party terms in writing; the word “refurbished” does not establish a particular warranty, inspection process, or return right.
