Before buying a racing game for a group, confirm how many people can play together in the exact version you plan to buy—and whether that means split-screen on one system, local wireless, or online. Then check platform compatibility, controller needs, difficulty options, race modes, and any internet or subscription requirements. A game’s general “multiplayer” label does not answer all of those questions.
Start with the kind of multiplayer your group needs
Player counts apply to particular play modes, not necessarily to every way of playing. A title might support two people on one console but more over local wireless or online. If everyone will be in the same room, check for one-system split-screen or local wireless specifically; if players will be in different places, check online capacity and any platform or crossplay limits.

For example, Nintendo lists GRID Autosport for Switch as supporting 1–2 players on one system and 2–8 through local wireless or online play. Those are three distinct capacities, not a single eight-player split-screen mode.
Verify the exact platform and edition
Features can differ between platforms and editions. Check the store page or publisher FAQ for the exact system you own, and confirm that the listed mode is available on that version. Do not assume that crossplay works on every platform or in every mode.

LEGO’s LEGO 2K Drive FAQ describes two-player split-screen in Story, Cup Series, and Race modes. It lists crossplay for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam or Epic, but not Nintendo Switch. If your group spans platforms, check the specific combination before purchasing.
Count controllers and check compatibility
Work out how many compatible controllers the game requires for the mode you want, then compare that number with what the group already owns. A store listing may specify a controller per player even when a console’s detachable or bundled controllers seem sufficient; follow the game’s own requirements and confirm which controller types it supports.

Nintendo’s GRID Autosport listing names the Nintendo LABO Toy-Con Car & Pedal, HORI Pro Deluxe, and HORI Pro Mini wheels as supported. If you are considering a HORI Pro Mini racing wheel for Nintendo Switch, first confirm that the specific game supports it and that the listing is for the correct system; cover the group’s basic controller needs before buying an accessory.

Look for difficulty settings and ways to bring newcomers in
For a mixed-skill group, check for adjustable difficulty, driving assists, tutorials, and control options. These features can make it easier to play together without requiring every participant to have the same experience. Their presence and names vary by game, so confirm them on the relevant platform’s listing or the publisher’s documentation.
The 4PGP Nintendo Switch listing describes four difficulty levels, an assist mode, gyroscopic controls, and a tutorial. The NASCAR Rivals publisher FAQ describes adjustable assists and difficulty, along with configurable Race Now and split-screen settings.

Match the race formats to how your group wants to play
Decide whether the group wants to jump into quick races, compete in a championship, try time attack, or play through a career or story. These are different structures, and a game’s multiplayer capacity alone does not tell you which formats are available for group play. Check the mode names and any stated player limits before buying.

Check internet, account, and subscription requirements
Separate offline local play from online play when checking costs and setup. Online multiplayer may require an internet connection, an account, or a paid platform subscription; verify the current requirements for your console and region before relying on online play.
For Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled on Xbox, the Xbox listing describes local multiplayer for 2–4 players with shared or split screen. It also says online multiplayer on console requires a separately sold Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. The local-play listing is separate from that online requirement.
Use a short checklist to compare candidates
- Group size and mode: Record the number of players for one-system split-screen, local wireless, and online separately.
- Platform and edition: Match the listing to the system and version you will actually use; check crossplay for the group’s platform combination.
- Controllers: Count compatible controllers required and available, including any game-specific restrictions.
- Skill range: Look for difficulty choices, assists, tutorials, and alternative control options if players have different experience levels.
- Race structure: Confirm the formats your group wants and whether their player limits fit.
- Online costs and setup: Check connection, account, and subscription requirements, as well as the current status of online services.
When several games meet those requirements, use the group’s preference for arcade, kart, or simulation-style racing to make the final choice. Official product listings establish specific features and capacities; they do not establish a universal best game.

Some facts are tied to particular editions and listings: Nintendo’s 4PGP page is for the UK Switch release, which it dates to February 5, 2026, while its official site also reports a Nintendo Switch 2 edition and PS5/Steam launch in 2026. Check the exact platform edition and regional store listing for current availability. Store details such as release availability and GRID Autosport’s listed 6.6 GB size can change.
