Choose split-screen when everyone is in the same room and the game supports your group size; choose online multiplayer when friends are remote or you want matchmaking, scheduled races, or internet-based private sessions. Before deciding, check the specific game and platform: player limits, controller needs, online memberships, and available modes vary.
Start with where your group will play
Choose split-screen for same-room races
Local play is usually the simplest fit for a gathering around one console and display: players can race together without arranging an online session. It works only if the game offers local multiplayer on your platform and supports enough players. You may also need a compatible controller for each participant.

Choose online multiplayer for remote friends
Online play connects people in different locations and may offer public matchmaking, scheduled events, or private lobbies. Those options are not interchangeable: a matchmaking mode finds opponents, while a private lobby lets a group set up its own race. Online play can require internet access, accounts, or a platform membership, depending on the game.

| Consideration | Split-screen/local | Online multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Where players are | Best when players are physically together. | Works for players in different locations. |
| Group size | Depends on the game, platform, screen layout, and number of controllers. | Depends on the online mode and its event rules. |
| Equipment and access | A compatible console and display, plus a controller for each player, may be needed. | Requires compatible game platforms and internet access; a platform membership may also be required. |
| Competition | Direct races with people in the room. | May include matchmaking, scheduled events, global races, or private lobbies. |
| Setup | Often quick once the game recognizes the local players and controllers. | May require accounts, a subscription, network access, or lobby setup. |
| Best fit | Couch gatherings and spontaneous local races. | Remote groups, broader competition, and planned or customizable sessions. |
Check the exact game and platform limits
Do not assume that a game’s local and online modes support the same number of players—or that a feature available on one console is available on another. Check the current official manual and platform listing for the specific version you plan to play.

Gran Turismo 7
Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 Online Manual says split-screen supports up to four players on supported consoles, but up to two on PS4. Each player needs a controller. The product page lists PS5 and PS4 disc editions and also describes a digital edition, so the disc is not the only purchase option. The product information says that only Arcade Mode is available offline. For online competition, the game offers global Daily Races and an annual Online Championship.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Nintendo’s multiplayer support page distinguishes among modes: Wireless Play supports two to eight players, with up to two per console, while LAN Play supports up to 12. These figures are mode-specific; they do not mean that eight people can use split-screen on one console. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play.

Forza Motorsport
Turn 10’s August 11, 2023 overview describes Featured Multiplayer events with practice, qualifying, and races, as well as Private Multiplayer lobbies with customizable settings. Featured Multiplayer uses Driver and Safety Ratings for matchmaking. These are useful examples of different online formats, but the overview does not establish a split-screen option for the current game. See the official Forza Motorsport page for the game.
Plan for controllers, membership, and connection quality
For local races
Count the players and compatible controllers before inviting everyone to race. Gran Turismo 7 explicitly requires each local split-screen player to have a controller. Verify the game’s local player limit for your console rather than relying on a general franchise or platform assumption.

For online races
Check whether the game or platform requires an online membership. For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play. Connection quality can also affect the experience: Gran Turismo’s online guidance says online environment quality depends on connection quality and NAT type.
