Start with what you need the phone to do
List your main uses before comparing specifications: calls and messaging, photos, video, gaming, work, accessibility, travel, or a mix. Then identify which features would make a practical difference for those tasks. CTIA recommends choosing an operating system and matching device features to intended use in its guide to choosing a device or plan.

This keeps the announcement sheet in perspective. A specification matters when it answers a need you actually have; there is no universally decisive spec for every buyer.
Verify the exact model will work with your carrier
Check the model number and regional variant with the carrier you plan to use before paying. Phone families can include variants with different network compatibility, so a shared product name or announcement headline is not proof that every version works on every carrier.

CTIA notes that providers use different technologies and spectrum, and a device may work poorly or not at all on a network for which it was not designed. Confirm compatibility for the exact model directly with the carrier, rather than relying on a general product description.
Compare the full cost and purchase terms
The advertised price may not represent what you will pay or the conditions attached to the purchase. CTIA notes that cost can vary depending on whether you buy unlocked, trade in an old device, pay outright, or use installments. For the specific phone and seller, check:

Confirm local availability and support
Once you have a model in mind, check the manufacturer’s information for the regional specification and current software-support terms, and confirm relevant network compatibility with your carrier. A newly announced phone may not be available in every market, and details can differ by regional variant. Without a specific model and country, availability, supported bands, and support duration cannot be established.

Check the seller and return protections
When buying online, inspect the item description, seller terms, refund and return rules, and who you can contact if something goes wrong. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on buying from an online marketplace also recommends safer payment methods, such as credit cards or secure payment systems with buyer protections. Review the protections available for your own transaction and location.

Its June 10, 2026 announcement about Version 5.1 of its pre-owned device grading standard describes criteria covering cosmetic grading, functional testing, battery health, and genuine-parts declaration. Those criteria can help you assess a pre-owned listing; they do not certify a newly announced phone.
